Could we maybe just put these in the middle of deserts or something?

I'm not opposed in principle. But next to the most densely populated places? Not clever.

We're already facing a global sand shortage, so your solution is to become one Russian nuclear accident from making the world's largest sheet of glass?

We are?

I hear there's some in Africa.

Desert sand is wind-blown and has the edges/ridges worn away (think of the desert as a giant rock polisher). This doesn't allow the sand to "stick" together with cementitious ingredients. And that's where it's key: sand is the heart of concrete and asphalt and it needs those jagged edges to stick/lock to each other. So unless a new material is invented to replace concrete and asphalt...

*edit* Even Dubai had to import sand for their construction boom.

I think of sand that gloms together as dirt. Blue collar sand. Sand gestated with alcohol in the blood surrogate. State school sand. I could go on...

I had no idea about the sand shortage. That being said, if desert sand is useless, how would putting nuclear reactors in the desert impact the sand shortage?

It could still be used for other uses, which could take the strain off construction sand. For example, sandbags for flooding in North Dakota. ; - )

Desert Sand also has a low silica content, which, despite me just joking around, isn't good for making glass. Building a nuclear plant in the desert might make sense, except for that whole "they need a lot of water nearby for cooling."

Basically: the deserts are useless.

Thanks for the explanation. Although, wouldn't desert sand still be a poor choice for sandbags? Based on your prior post, I would think you would want a sharper sand, no?

I'll admit, I was trying to be funny and didn't research enough before attempting the joke.

Yes, a sharper sand would be preferred to catch any silt and fines in the water that seeps through the sandbag. But, it not as critical as it is for construction materials.

Watched it yesterday and I'll give a few thoughts:

1. Hilarious that it's always FedEx imagery that gets used when FedEx has drastically reduced their flights in and out of Anchorage over the years (they switched to using 777s and now often overfly ANC) while UPS and others have increased the number of flights.

2. The flights between India and the US thing is new to me, I hadn't seen anything on that. It makes sense but I'm skeptical on it happening since Dubai and Qatar are likelier on better terms with India than the US.

3. One thing not mentioned about the layovers in Anchorage is that planes will swap flight crews as well, allowing the airlines to use less crew and the hotels and businesses in Anchorage some steady business throughout the year.

4. ANC makes a fuckton of money on landing fees (which aren't that high). Wanna know why ANC almost never closes when it snows? Because they spend top dollar on snow removal equipment AND on their crews to run it.

5. If the US wants to have some control over the Arctic Ocean they're gonna need to build a suitable Naval Base near it. Alaska has almost zero Navy prescence.

I never thought about that, but that's surprising.

Canadian forces are likely based out of Vancouver at the closest, aren't they?

Door Dash has informed all of its employees, including board members and software engineers, that they must make at least one food delivery run per month, do something like shadow a customer service agent.

Not everyone is happy with this news.

As someone who drives for them, I'm like good. Give everyone the driver experience!

Talked to my accountant, covering part of a traditional IRA into a Roth this week to sneak into this tax year. Apparently the BBB bill might take that away if passed as is next year which I doubt, but could happen. I’m all for hitting the rich, but as someone who just makes over the limit to contribute to a Roth, I’d like this to stay open since I don’t have a lot of tax advantages accounts available. And I’m certainly not someone with a huge portfolio.

i did retain slap shots bro as a fiduciary advisor, has helped me moved some stuff around and feel like I’m in a better place. Just wish I could have had this rate of savings/contributions 15 years ago. Now I can actually max out the 401k yearly limit and dump some into a taxable account after maxing out espp purchase and hsa

a.k.a. a backdoor Roth?

(IINM they are about to kill them.)

Kind of but my accountant today said it’s not really. That involves zeroing out all IRAs- I’m simply doing a one time conversion.

yes they may kill it, I wish they’d make an exception for people who are under 200k or something but I won’t lose sleep over it. At least I’m getting 10k into a Roth account
