What if his plan is to just bankrupt Twitter and write it off as a loss? How big of a target do his lenders put on his head if he does that?

Put it this way, even Trump isn't that stupid.

I love though that "Mr. Free Speech" plans to hire a "committee" to decide what is allowable content. Gee isn't that basically who he is firing?

edit: Jesus from the WaPo article...

The Washington Post previously reported that Musk planned to cut nearly 75 percent of the workforce of 7,500. One of the people familiar with the discussions said this week the cuts would be closer to 50 percent.

Maybe he is that stupid.

When thevonly verified people are crackpots, dictators and racists in 6 months and all advertising besides other racists and crackpots flees his status as a business genius will plummet like a Trump building's value.

Seriously. This is the best thing to happen to Tesla and SpaceX. They're getting yanked as soon as he is exposed and loses $40B

Appears Apple has an alternative called Tribel. No fucking way Twitter survives Musk. All of these tech companies need to be put under the same laws as MSNBC, etc.

And yet a significant portion of the links posted on the Cafe still go to Twitter.

I'm all for rubber necking at a train wreck, but right now we're still passengers, not passers-by.

It'll take a while but it's not going to survive. It might take a year. Musk in his infinite wisdom got into it with Hillary Clinton about the Pelosi attack by posting a conspiracy theory about it. He's the owner of the platform. The platform now will be overrun by misinformation. It'll happen over time and it will collapse.

What do people think about paying for social media? I honestly would be all for it if we could get something much better than the ones we have now and it didn’t have the sketchy elements to it.

I'm fine with the free model with commercials. However, they must follow the same laws as other news organizations. They don't now and now that they're all owned by the plutocracy there isn't a one worth spending any time on.

In social media, the advertisers are the customers. The users are the product. How Elan doesn't understand this is astonishing. I mean, Google and Youtube are right there.

For now yeah...but Twitter was starting to shed people to Tik Tock anyways and was only a year or two away from becoming Facebook (i.e. the thing people's parents/grandparents use) before all of this ridiculousness. Once the paid model hits the current verifieds (roughly 90 days) the [bleep] is going to hit the fan. They likely won't be deplatformed but Twitter's relevance is waning to say the least.

Also, the SM landscape is going to fracture a bit.

Twitter in 3 years will be like Tesla when Ford and GM roll out their major EV lines...helpless to stop as their influence and marketshare collapses.

I don’t know if it’s just coincidence with the Pelosi thing happening, but man did my algorithms shift after Musk took over. Seeing way more conspiracy related things. Either Elon was actually able to “flip a switch” as soon as he stepped in the door and take down censors, or all these alt-right accounts bought into their own conspiracy theory and self-censored thinking they were getting shadow-banned.

I am really surprised by this... but then again, I may actually have posted Twitter links which I picked up from say reddit (speaking of open sewers).

I may actually be spreading the Twitter derp without ever going to Twitter. I will start watching out for that and try not to link to them.

Basically, Twitter is The Sun. Do not support them.

I guess the best way for us to do that would be to simply block twitter on our boxes. Then you would not even go there inadvertently. That's what I have done with certain nutbar sites which are sometimes linked to. Blocking Fox News is very easy and the algorithm learns quickly and doesn't give you their "sponsored content" on other sites anymore. They disappear from your ecosystem.

If you post a reputable source it's fine (for now) but if it's Joeybagadonuts74368887 maybe leave it be ;^)

It's more that people are saying crazy stuff knowing they are safe now.

Yeah, I think freshness is a huge factor in the algorithms, so any change is going to reach critical mass very quickly. Social media has the attention span of the average person, and that is measured in hours now.
