BU Season Thread II: The Resurgence

but either way, it was described to me like this: "He's not going to go JUST for the money."

Now I know you cynics out there (of course, I'm NOT cynical at all :D) will say, "That's what they all say." Just reporting what I have heard....
I'd also say it was for the women, but have you BEEN to Buffalo?

(I keed, I keed)

Re: BU Season Thread II: The Resurgence

On Hickey - the kid looks very impressive. No surprise that he has been getting a lot of attention. I am hopeful that Calgary (and the Hickey family) is looking at the fact that Quinn has groomed several NHL defensemen in recent years.

He could really be a beast in this league as early as next year.

I can understand mookie's point about him returning close to home a la Chuck Kobasew after one year. I'd just be surprised. Know nothing about the kid but the percentages tell me he will be back at BU for at least one more year.

Re: BU Season Thread II: The Resurgence

Last year O'Regan - 22 Points. Rodrigues 14 points. This year O'Regan 44 points, Rodrigues 54 points.

Are you really going to say that skating with the "straw that stirs the drink" doesn't have a massive impact?

Personally I think he has made more than a 4 win difference this year, but that's just me.

Fingers crossed that we have another year (and another year of Quinn and co recruits to keep beefing up the roster) before we find out what happens without #9.

Of course he's had a big impact. However if Parker was still coach Eichel would be on the bench because he refused to backcheck enough and tried one too many individual rushes.

Lets be honest and respectful here. Parker was one of the greatest coaches of all time but his horrific constipated offensive style and forcing all kids to basically be the same player was killing the team for years. You can't just unlearn the system that was pounded into you overnight. O'Regan and Rodriques are benefiting from Eichel of course, but also from a much more aggressive offensive scheme. Notice how they pass the puck near the net now on the PP, instead of the tried and not so true kicking it out to the D for a slapshot from the point with nobody in front of the net. Also notice how the D don't retreat behind their own net on the PP and stand there for 20 seconds while their opponent has a chance to do a line change, eat a sandwich, and then create a turnover.

Re: BU Season Thread II: The Resurgence

Well, there is also a kid who decommitted from another school who has a certain family connection to BU. I have no inside info, but I'm hoping BU may be on his short list of schools he is now considering.

And if we want any hope of Matthews coming here, we need to start getting his name right: Auston

Tkachuk was drafted by OHL London in 2013, fourth round and reportedly is still deciding which path to pursue. Can't imagine that BU wouldn't be one of his NCAA choices.

Virtually no one in the recruiting community thinks Matthews will go NCAA. However, last week, there was a story stating that he's accelerating and had some interest in Wisconsin. Also some hints that NTDP coach Don Granato could replace Mike Eaves.

Have heard similar to what chickod posted about #9 (but not the part about WJC teammates). Eichel has been quite disciplined about using "leave when the time is right" for all inquiries about his future plans. NHL.com interview

Interesting to see that uncommitted Chad Krys, another ex-Terrier's son, was moved up to the U18s and is paired with Charlie McAvoy (2015) on the top power play unit. Clayton Keller (2016) also was called up to the U18s --3 goals in first 3 games. Seems that NTDP wants more firepower for the upcoming World U18s.

He's been exceptionally impressive this year. Has a top-flight shot, is solid in his own zone, and a great asset to the PP. He's not quite there yet to make the jump, but after next season very well could be. Of course, as mentioned above, Quinn's reputation of developing D would likely make Calgary more comfortable with him being here for another year or two.

Re: BU Season Thread II: The Resurgence

Nice story on Eichel by USCHO's Scott Weighart

“I don’t think he’s rushing out the door,” Quinn says. “He loves BU, he loves his teammates and he loves playing here.”

Quinn says that there’s no question that Eichel will go straight to the NHL when he does go pro, and he believes that he would have statistical success immediately — maybe 35 or 40 points for starters. But that doesn’t make the decision a no-brainer.

“Because at 19? It’s a freakin’ hard league; I don’t care how talented you are,” Quinn says. “One thing I talked to him about is, you need to talk to Jonathan Toews, James Van Riemsdyk, Colin Wilson and Phil Kessel. Talk to people who were in your shoes — guys who stayed and guys who left. And I know what they’ll tell him. The guys who went back? The best moves of their lives. And the guy who left? Kessel regrets it to this day because it’s a whole different animal.”

Pretty sure we know what Wilson would tell him.

Something like this? (Start at 3:52 if ad takes you to beginning.)

Oh, that was great!! I never saw that.

My silly, stupid, based-on-nothing speculation on Eichel is this - if BU makes it to the Frozen Four and doesn't win (and mind you - I am not in the least insinuating they'll be there, though they have a better chance than most), he may come back because of the new recruits coming in and the fact that they could have just as serious a chance to make it and win it next season. We have no idea what will happen and I honestly don't know when we'll hear anything. For now, I'm enjoying what we have coming up and if he leaves, he leaves. We all knew he would be, so his staying would something so out of the ordinary and very awesome. Plus, after reading other school's threads as they talk about him and saying "so glad he's done after this year!!" etc. it will be really fun to hear what they all say should the unthinkable happen and he returns.

Re: BU Season Thread II: The Resurgence

My take on Eichel is that if he's drafted by Edmonton he's gonna say F dat and refuse to sign! ;) I've never been there, but I keep seeing players avoiding going there for some reason.

He's been the best Frosh dman at BU I can remember can anyone think of one in the past 30 years that started out this strong ? I am thinking Shattenkirk was very solid out of the gate. Of course OC was my favorite BU player ever just cant make comparisons 40 yrs apart

Kevin was good, but that team was very raw and incomplete, and the defensive miscues made by the young D, such as him, were amplified by the pitiful goaltending and attitude of Brett Bennett. I don't remember a freshman D, Colby included, who had as good of a shot as Hickey in their first year.

Tom Poti. He was awesome his two years at BU. Kind of underrated NHL career. Wasn't a superstar like some thought he may have been but was an Olympian and an all star.

Yup of course slipped my mind played in 1997 NC championship game

Re: BU Season Thread II: The Resurgence

Rich Brennan also had a very good freshman season, but not as impressive as Hickey's in my opinion. Hickey just brings the full package - no weaknesses. Poise, a great shot, solid in his own end. Poti was probably a better season, but only because he brought more of an offensive facet (beyond a good shot). But I think Hickey has looked better on the defensive side.

You know all the *****ing and complaining you do to me about how you don't get emails about events at games? Well, I haven't received any notification about my HE tickets, which is more important in my opinion. How did you find this out?

I have an extra ticket...just confirmed today...my wife is unable to go. Of course (obviously) the person would have to sit next to me. :D FYI...I buy them from the Garden in advance...don't have to look through that annoying netting at the ends.

At this point, first come first served and we would then have to make arrangements. These are "hard" tickets so I can't email them.
