BU season thread 4 - 2014-15 // destiny's children

Not really, but the last Terrier to play every game of his BU career at center was mentioned. It is either Magowan, Skladany or Klema (only one who was a center).

Sean

I can't really remember anymore at this point. I seem to recall Skladany on the first line in 03-04 and Mullen centering that line. So I'm going to go ahead and guess Klema though I have no idea why I think he was a center, as I remember very little of him besides quitting the team.

it has to be Klema. I do remember his as a center, and given that he only played 2+ years, not hard for him to play them all at center. I know for sure that Magowan and Skladany were primarily wings.

Yeah, that is what I am thinking. From the way Sean asked the question, he seemed to suggest it was a more obscure guy, so I think Klema fits that.

Klema, a productive playmaker in the USHL, was the fifth member of the so-called "Fab Five" 2001 recruit class, along with Brian McConnell, Justin Maiser, Ryan Whitney and Bryan Miller. That class also included a goalie from Quebec, Sebastien "Now you see him, now you don't" Laplante. Left school a few weeks into first semester supposedly because he was homesick but must've recovered quickly since he surfaced in Calgary few weeks later.

Correct, the answer is David Klema. He played 92 games for BU over three seasons, all at center.

The reason I asked is not because I have the answer, but I was looking at all the centers BU has had and how many also played wing, even if just a single game like Cory Trivino. If BU used only 4 centers a season since Hockey East started they would have only needed 34 total (assuming every player stayed healthy and played four seasons). However, BU has used 95 different players who have played at least one game at center. Of those only 9 played only center, with 3 playing fewer games than Eichel. If you includes those who played 6 or fewer games at another position that only adds another 11 centers to the list. Is it really so hard to find a pure center? Or do better center comes along and displace other players?

Back to trivia: With Grzelcyk named captain and expected back for his senior season I looked at all 117 BU captains to see how many junior captains BU has had and how many were also senior captains. Does anyone want to take a guess?

Re: BU season thread 4 - 2014-15 // destiny's children

I would like to share a story of what happened to me today that illustrates just how fortunate we are to have Brian Durocher as coach of our Women's hockey team.

About a couple of months ago, BU had a university-wide fundraising drive called the BU Day of Giving. As part of this, each area of the university had a little contest. For Athletics, the 3 teams with the most number of $50 or more donors would receive a bonus gift. I've given modestly to the BU men's team over the years in addition to my season tickets. When I went onto the fundraising website, I noticed that the Friends of Womens Hockey was in contention for the top three, with the Men's Friends several places behind. So I thought, BU and Coach Durocher run a fantastic Women's program, so why not give them a gift since they were in the running for the top three. My gift was pretty modest, either $100 or $150, I forget which. Not long after, I received the typical computer generated thank you email and postcard in the mail thanking me for my gift to BU. Expected. A couple of weeks later I received a voice mail message from a female athlete from I think the softball team, thanking me for my gift to BU Athletics. A week ago, I received a phone call from Brandon Hickey, thanking me for my years as a season ticket holder. Very nice gestures that were more than enough.

Fast forward to tonight. As I got home from work and walked to my door, I noticed a small package that looked like it was in red Christmas gift wrap. As I got closer I noticed that the "gift wrap" was a hockey poster, and when I got closer, I noticed it was a Women's hockey poster. I thought that was strange and saw it had my name and address on it so I took it inside. When I unwrapped the poster, I saw a Green Mountain Coffee Roasters k-cup box, a larger office size box I guess. It didn't have coffee in it. When I opened the box up, there was a green camouflage baseball cap with BU Hockey on the front in red. It was a giveaway at a Women's hockey game and BU2K regularly wears one to games. Nice. I also noticed a note card inside, a 4X6" folding note card. I opened it up and there was a handwritten note from Coach Durocher. I am not talking about a couple sentences. The entire card, both areas of the interior of the card, was completely filled with hand writing. I read through the note and then discovered the whole backside of the card was filled with handwriting. The note was about how proud he is to coach the team, how proud he is also of how the team conducts themselves off the ice, academically and in the community. It had a recap of the season and a look forward on how he sees the team faring next season. Then in closing, thanking me again for my gift and how much it means to the team.

To say I am blown away is an understatement. Again, my gift was modest, it is not as if I gave $5000. We are so lucky to have a man like Brian Durocher coaching our Women's team. This won't be the last time I give to the Women's program.

blah blah blah.

All those years I've been buying you drinks after games and all I get is an occasional thank you, but someone sends you a hockey poster, a hat and a card and they get a written ball washing out here on the BU thread? What gives?

Coach Durocher has also been extremely nice to to my family and me. He is always willing to talk to me and when we do talk he makes sure to ask how my family is doing. He has also always sent my family hand written notes to update us on the team, to thank us for our donations, no matter how much, and for attending their games.

Matthew Tkachuk, who BU pursued after he decommitted from Notre Dame, has signed on with the London Knights. BC was recruiting him, too. Very likely a first-round pick in 2016.

Correct. I don't think I can find a single person who has a bad thing to say about him. He's humble, he's nice, and an all-around great guy.

The worst thing I've heard is that a Northeastern friend of mine hates him because BU women always manage to beat the Huskies, and he believes that BD has something up his sleeve.

Hasn't spoken to the coach personally, and I don't think he wants to: He's probably like him too much.
