Re: BU season thread 4 - 2014-15 // destiny's children

And BU scored no soft goals in the last six years...

I've already mentioned O'Connor's mistakes during the NCAA Tournament in previous posts. I also suggested that maybe there should be some superstats for goalies, but I guess you missed those posts. :p

And that brutal goal Ben Bishop gave up in game one vs Montreal completely deflated his team and they went on to lose, oh wait... :p:rolleyes:

To get back to my larger point, I guess you're satisfied with the recruiting, progress and coaching of the goalie position at BU in recent years?

I am, yes. What is your definition of recent, and which years within that span have you been unsatisfied with BU's goaltending?

I would imagine it's every season that

a) BU did not win a national championship
b) BU's goalie(s) did not record a shutout for every game

dozens of them. please do though feel to hold it until I post again, no cheating!!!

Quinn was a huge part of getting Eichel

Considering it had been a dream of his for years, leaving home and moving to Ann Arbor was an easy decision for Eichel. Before he left, though, he had another decision he wanted to make. He wanted to decide where he was going to college so it wouldn't weigh on his mind all season.

Eichel grew up watching college hockey (more accurately, he grew up watching any hockey he could get his eyes on), and as was the case with the USNTDP, he made it a goal of his to eventually play at that level. Eichel had actually been a Boston College fan, with his father saying that BC was his "dream school" as a kid. BC showed interest in Eichel, but he wanted to make sure he looked at all his options.

As he did that, he found himself drawn to BU more and more. He liked Agganis Arena and its top-notch facilities. He liked Jack Parker and the pro style his team played. He liked BU's connection with Mike Boyle, one of the most respected trainers in the country and someone Eichel had worked with previously.

"I never would've thought five, 10 years ago that I'd go to BU over BC," Eichel said. "It ended up just being a better fit. I got that gut feeling that BU was a better place for me."

So Eichel made a verbal commitment to BU and headed out to Ann Arbor for his next challenge. Making the under-17 team meant another step up in competition, as the USNTDP squads play mostly United States Hockey League teams. The USHL was packed with college prospects and future NHL draft picks who were even stronger and faster than what Eichel had faced in the EmJHL.

If you're going to copy and paste 300 words from an article of mine, you could at least throw in a link. Thanks.

What Agganis said.

BU goalies career save percentage has continued to improve. Sean Maguire has the best career save % for any Terrier goalie at 0.92327, beating out John Curry's 0.92313. O'Connor's 0.921 is third best all-time. Millan's 0.915 is 4th best all-time. And Connor LaCouvee, who you lambasted, also had some excellent games. His save % is 6th all-time with his 0.91346 beating out Rick DiPietro's 0.91257. On GAA O'Connor's 2.55 is 6th all-time, Millan's 2.579 is 8th all-time, LaCouvee's 2.584 is 10th all-time and Maguire's 2.69 is 13th all-time.

[Note: All-time career records include 39 goalies who played at least 400 minutes since the start of the 1957-58 season.]

BU goalies single season save percentage has also continued to improve. After Tim Regan's all-time best junior season 0.929 and John Curry's senior season 0.928, O'Connor is 3rd with this past season's 0.927. Maguire's sophomore season 0.926 is 4th, Millan's senior season 0.923 is 5th and LaCouvee's 0.913 this season is 13th. Curry holds 3 of the top 11 single season save %s, O'Connor 2 of the top eight, Maguire 2 of the top ten, and Millan 3 of the top nine. Seven of the top ten single season save %s are held by O'Connor, Maguire and Millan, with Curry holding 2 of the other top ten spots as well as 11th. On GAA O'Connor's 2.18 this past season is 9th all-time, while Millan's freshman season season 1.94 is 2nd all-time.

[Note: All-time season records include 94 goalies who played at least 400 minutes in a single season since the start of the 1957-58 season.]

As progress of goalies, here are the stats for Curry, Millan, Maguire and O'Connor for each season:
Code:
Curry	GAA	SV%
So	1.97	0.923
Jr	2.24	0.918
Sr	2.01	0.928

Millan
Fr	1.94	0.921
So	3.15	0.891
Jr	2.68	0.919
Sr	2.60	0.923

Maguire
Fr	2.54	0.926
So	2.90	0.919

O'Connor
Fr	2.86	0.910
So	2.89	0.920
Jr	2.18	0.927
Millan is the only goalie who really had a bad season after arriving at BU, regressing his sophomore season, but he rebounded nicely his junior and senior seasons.

Would I like to see even better numbers? Of course, but they are getting better season by season. As for next season I have confidence in both Maguire and LaCouvee and I have confidence in the coaching staff regarding future goalies.

And take out the headline "Quinn was a huge part of getting Eichel". It undermines the claim that Parker is 100% the reason Eichel came to BU. ;):p

Re: BU season thread 4 - 2014-15 // destiny's children

Eichel would have had a great year as a 4th line checking forward dedicated to clogging the middle of the ice and dumping the puck in at the red line and going in for a line change under Parker. ;)

Excuse me, but that's the LEGENDARY JACKIE PARKER to you, OK?

That is one of my few complaints about Coach Parker: he was loyal to the upper classmen to a fault. I believe Coach Parker would have eventually put Eichel on the first line, but it would have been after he earned it in Parker’s opinion.

John Cullen, BU’s all-time leading scorer, and who lead the team in scoring his freshman season (and was the ECAC and New England rookie of the year), appears to have played on the third line for his entire freshman season (based on incomplete records I have for the 1983-84 season). He was not promoted to the 1st line until the 15th game of his sophomore season.

Shawn McEachern started on the third line his freshman season for 8 games before being promoted to the first line for 11 of the next 12 games and then being dropped back down to the third line for two games before finishing the season on the second line. BTW, the game where McEachern was dropped to the third line was the first game Joe Sacco played on the first line after a freshman season mostly on the 3rd line and a sophomore season mostly on the 2nd line up until his promotion to the 1st line.

Danny O’Regan played most of his freshman season on the 2nd line. The list goes on of excellent players who were not promoted to the 1st line as freshman. Tony Amonte and Keith Tkachuk are exceptions that stand out. Even then, Amonte started his freshman season on the 2nd line and was not promoted to the 1st line until his 13th game of the season. Keith Tkachuk made it faster as he started on the third line for just 5 games before being promoted to the 1st line.

Who (other than Sean) can recall who opened the '90-'91 season paired with Amonte and McEachern? I only remember because I kinda knew him. Hint: he did some modeling on the side....
