BU @ RPI, Saturday, 12/13/14

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday, 12/13/14

yah!!! cause the enggies goon it up and usually dress horrible homer refs when our boys visit!!!! :p

Moook: We do have a history of gooning it up. When i was in school we called it hatchet hockey. But the games are fun. I would never count on our officials being homers, since none of them would want to live in Troy and usually commute from a distance to do the games.;)

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday, 12/13/14

It's pretty much the only game where we're going to get to see a fight. Keep it.

As good a reason as any I've seen ;) but from a BU fan's perspective, it makes no sense that we hadn't played Colgate for 25 years or so until this year but we get RPI every year. I feel the same way about the Dartmouth game. Its not "don't ever play RPI again" but lets mix it up a bit more.

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday, 12/13/14

Maybe BU is still repaying in form of the game for a Buddy Powers Liberation....? :D FYI - I always liked Buddy and his teams...

It's tough to play every 3-4 years. You need to have a certain number of games locked in several years out. Again, they are traditional opponents that have played 65 times in the past 61 years. The series is competitive (BU 33-29-3) and more often than not the games have been close and entertaining. It is a relatively short (less than 3 hours) bus ride on interstates. Colgate is about 5 1/2 hours from Boston and miles from the nearest interstate. All those things factor in. Besides, I think many, if not most, of the fans from both sides like this series.

Agree with all of that. I've enjoyed this series for nearly five decades.

But, to this day, I'll never understand why BU chose as Jack Kelley's successor Leon Abbott, who in his three years at Rensselaer lost all six games to BU by a combined score of 43-9, including an 11-0 ECAC quarterfinal that featured plenty of "goonishness." Don't understand it, but since it led to JP taking the reins a year and a half later....;)

This is strictly rumor and hearsay, and antique rumor and hearsay at that, but I was told that Al Sidd, the driving force in the FOBUH, wanted a coach with strong recruiting connections to the Toronto area. Can any ancient BU fans confirm or deny?

Personally, I thought at the time that Abbott was a good coach while at RPI. IIRC, those BU teams which he faced were not too bad. :D

Hoosick St., my friend. Pronounce it as if the s were a z.

And if you continue east a ways on Hoosick St., you'll come to Ted's Fish Fry.

Philadelphia has cheese steaks, Cincinnati has chili, and the Capital District has fish fries.

You haven't lived till you've had one. ;)

Thanks Waite. I was not aware that Ted's was still around. Do you go back far enough to remember Gallagher's Fish Fry also?? Back in the 60's they had the absolute best!!

My opinion is that with as many OOC games as we have to fill, we will get plenty of chances to mix it up. We are already seeing that with games like Colgate and Union this year, Bentley last year. I've heard we will see Quinnipiac next year.

I like the RPI series. To me it make sense. The games are usually competitive and typically both teams are at least decent so the winner of the game will get some help in the PWR. If we assume they don't want to add another flight, and also that we would prefer to play an ECAC team over an AHA team, RPI is a pretty good choice to maintain an ongoing "rivalry" with.

Yes, Ted's is still around. I was there in October. They have pictures on the wall dating from when they first opened, back around 1960.

Can't say I remember Gallagher's. Where was it located?

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday, 12/13/14

I know that every team has to play with injuries during the course of a season, but this is getting ridiculous. We keep losing a player a game, and nobody is coming back.
Saturday is going to be quite a challenge.

It certainly is. We seem to get a lot of injury prone players. Two of our recruits, Evan Tironese and Todd Burgess, may be in that category also.

Somewhere in the wonderful town of Waterveliet I think. Back in the 60's to help with expenses, I worked on a farm in Waterford and the farmer who was pretty elderly, took me around to so many places that were just wonderful. He once drove me up to Warrensburg to this wonderful smoke house called Oscar's which is still there(we pass it on our way up the Adirondacks) and that was another gem. What made Gallagher's so special was the sauce they used on the fish fry, not exactly sure what it was but some sort of chili sauce.

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday, 12/13/14

With the long list of injuries to forwards, and this being a non conference game, why not have Gillespie in the line up? Or has he been hurt also?

It looks like store rather than a restaurant, or is this the wrong place?

Gallaghers was outside the South Gate of the Arsenal. It has been gone for some time, and it is now a bar/restaurant.
