BU Recruiting Update--Part 5

"Opt-in" schools can offer up to 26 full scholarships per team, eliminating the need to break scholarships into partial, 25% or 50% packages. This makes top-tier "opt-in" programs more attractive to recruits, as more players will receive full rides.

BU now has 14 forwards, 7 Ds and 3 goalies set for next season. If LD Xavier Villeneuve commits as is widely expected, that would bring the roster to 25, with one more slot to fill.

Also, BU will now be able to participate in revenue sharing with players. Especially important since starting this year, NIL used for solely "paying players" is now a thing of the past. NIL has to be tied to specific marketing and pass a NCAA clearinghouse.

One negative is that the max roster size is 26 players and that is frozen at the beginning of the season, If a player leaves the program or has a season ending injury, the roster spot cannot be replaced.

I also wonder if they would keep it at 25 going into the season to keep open the option to fill a need mid season like Yegorov and Lawrence

I *think* rosters are frozen at the beginning of the season regardless of how many, but not 100% sure on that. I haven't heard of a team going into the season intentionally lower than 26.

Some players not on scholarship were exempt from 26 man roster last year and might apply to BU this year
BC with 27 brought in a new player in January and had already opted in
BU the past two years has had 26 man rosters

From the CHN Article: https://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2026/03/27_The-New-Era-of-College-Hockey.php

"Designated Student-Athletes (The Grandfather Clause): To protect current players and those who were being recruited at the time, anyone on a roster as of April 2025 is "grandfathered" in. They do not count toward the new 26-man limit for the remainder of their career."

BUT according to Mike McMahon, his understanding of the rule is that DSAs had to be submitted by last summer and that BU would have to comply with roster caps immediately. While Mike is not an official source, he has as good a handle on all these new rules as much as anyone else I've read.
