BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Regarding scholarships, I recall hearing that Marc Hetnik’s dad is a BU employee, so he doesn’t need a hockey scholarship.

His mother is a BC employee, and it came down to BU or BC. Wouldn't have needed a hockey scholarship at either school.
Marc Hetnik was a very good two-way forward on the '78 National Championship Team.

anyone know for sure what the rule is there. has to be more to it, time of service etc. If not, teams would be hiring moms in secretary pool left and right at the big schools and circumvent scholarship limits

You didn't follow USC basketball's scandal, did you? They (allegedly) did just that.

Most schools require an employee to work 18-36 months at the school before any dependents enrolled get 75%-100% off. BU is 24 months and 90% off tuition, but full price room and board, I believe. It is hard to prove that the parent was hired for the student, but if you have a series of coincidences the NCAA will look into your hiring practices.

Don't remember what BC's rule is for faculty; but for non-teachers its something like 5 years (recently reduced from 10)

Faculty could be immediate for all I know; but like you inferenced - the risk would be in auxiliary support roles

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

BU was clearly the best team that year, but Joe Mullen was the best player skating in the N/C game.

Joe Mullen was a ton of hockey player. In my experience as a BU fan, he was the guy I least wanted to see come over the boards late in a tight game.

I need to amend that remark. Mullen is second. Malcolm Lyles is the guy I least want to see come over the boards in a tight game.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Did I read that right? Parker lost his wife in the middle of the season in '78? Wow.

Actually, she died hours before the ECAC tournament consolation game. BU had been 26-1-0 going following ECAC quarterfinal. People close to the program were aware earlier in the week of the impending situation. Providence upset BU in the semis, then BU won the consolation with assistants Don Cahoon and Bob Murray coaching. The NCAA selection committee decided BU and PC should meet again in a play-in game in Providence to decide who would join BC as Eastern reps in the Final Four. BU won, 5-3.

Note: I didn't actually recall all of this. A friend recently forwarded a bunch of clippings from the 1970s.
