BU Off-Season: Forward to the Past

Re: BU Off-Season: Forward to the Past

Vic Stanfield and Brian Gilmour?
Brian Gilmour ('66-'67) is the only Terrier to wear #4 and be named a first team All-American. Vic Stanfield wore #10 the two seasons he was named a first team All-American. Three Terriers who wore #4 were also named second-team All-Americans, who were they?

Chris Kelleher (96-97, 97-8), Sean Sullivan (06-07).
Dan Spang was a first team All-American, wearing #11, but wore #4 earlier in his career.

How about Chris Kelleher, Chris Dyment and Sean Sullivan?

Re: BU Off-Season: Forward to the Past

I've now uploaded over 100 BU games on my Google drive. I've gotten tired of seeing BC, NU and Harvard, so for the moment I've paused from converting Beanpot games and I'm doing some random regular season games. The latest batch includes the following:

2001 Nov 25 Cornell at BU
2001 Dec 09 UMass at BU
2006 Feb 18 BU at UNH

Would love to see that 11/89 game at WBA against Michigan State in which BU rallied from a 3-goal third period deficit and won 6-4.

Re: BU Off-Season: Forward to the Past

To convert the remaining games will likely take about 1.5 TB of space, so I've been looking at 4 TB NAS. The cost for the one I'm likely to buy is $330 total. As for making all the games available online, that could cost another $100-$200 depending on what option I choose. If I do get the new NAS and more online space I will also consider coverting tapes sent to me.

I'm in for $100, Sean. And I'll match the next $100 of commitments dollar-for-dollar. These games are an amazing treasure trove and should be preserved in perpetuity. I hope others will follow up with specific pledges to make this a reality.

Re: BU Off-Season: Forward to the Past

Me too, but not sure if this game was televised.

I have never seen this one in terms of a tv broadcast. But I believe at the beginning of the BU-Michigan State series telecasts (game 2 and 3 that Sean has) are the highlight clips of Amonte's beautiful goal and I think of his assist too (where he made a great play and then dished to maybe Joe Sacco?). I don't think they show up on the You-Tube loaded 10-minute segments, but they are on the video tapes I have. So somewhere, someone has video...

Just finished. What a game! :) :). Some thoughts:

- They played a solid 1st, but 3 penalties.
- They started the 2nd on the PP and had three pucks hop over sticks or flat old whiffed with open nets in front of them. I mean, at this point you're thinking there is NO WAY they lose this game with their skill and how the game is going. Stay out of the box, score 3-4 goals and win going away...
- There was like a 20 minute review after Miami's first goal. I mean come on, this **** never gets better.
- Miami was 0-7 on the PP. Ouch
- Gilroy tried to make a cute move at the blue line with 9 minutes left in the 2nd that resulted in a 2 on 0 of Miami. Milan made a nice stop.
- But man Gilroy was smooooooth
- Colby Cohen with a major clanger with about 6 mins left in the 2nd.
- Jason Lawrence all alone in front with 4:30 mins left in the 2nd. Shoot into the goalies chest. (Find a corner Jason! ;) )
- Shots were 14-14 with 4:26 left in the 2nd.
- BU was SHUT DOWN in the 3rd. Miami's neutral zone game was outstanding and BU had no answer.
- Shots are 3-1 Miami in the 3rd with 8:40 left in the game. Yikes.
- Miami's 2nd goal was just like their 1st. Rebound laying lonely, forward swoops in and buries it.
- BU takes a penalty with 6:22 left down a goal. Oooof.
- Bad turnover by ShattDeuces lead to the 3rd Miami goal.
- The 100 Foot stares on the BU bench were..... Wow. No chance they win this game. Zero.
- Watching the BU fans clap politely after the 2nd BU goal is a riot. A bit of a different reaction after the 3rd BU goal. :)
- 1.1 seconds and Milan almost gagged it up
- BU was outshooting Miami 7-3 with 10 mins left in OT

A truly stunning game. An interesting re-watch.

I love the shot of a guy in a Maine jersey going nuts after the 3rd Miami goal he must of originally been from Ohio 😙. You need to play it a little cooler then that when you are rooting against your League.

As much as they had strong younger talent as they had having SRs like Zac Cohen, Higgins, Lawrence, McCarthy and of course Gilroy made a huge difference. Haven’t seen a dynamic like that since.

Milan had like zero confidence at the end of that season was fighting the puck like crazy. Not that he didn’t have some big saves too.

NESN had the Hockey East broadcast rights that season and the game was not listed on the NESN schedule, so I don't think it was broadcast anywhere. However, clips from the game are used in the station opening (and can be seen before game 3). I believe that those were taken for a short sports segment during the 11 o'clock news by a local station, but that the entire game was probably not recorded. And, yes, Amonte's assist was to Joe Sacco.

Thanks for the very generous offer.

How and where can we contribute?
Thanks. My bank has partnered with Zelle and I also have a PayPal account, or an old fashioned check works. If you are interested just send me a message on your preferred choice and I will send you the information.

Except for the regional final - Milan was unreal in that game. While UNH punching the puck into their own net with 14 seconds left was the main reason we won, Millan's play was the next reason.

Re: BU Off-Season: Forward to the Past

Having watched many of the BU games from the 1980/90 and 1990/91 seasons, I will say that, with the benefit of hindsight, Shawn McEachern was an even better player than I'd given him credit for at the time. And I gave him a ton of credit at the time. I don't see how any D1 team could have skated two players who were as fast as McEachern and Amonte.

Re: BU Off-Season: Forward to the Past

If schools don't want to fully open till then I wonder if something could be worked out for that first semester where certain housing is given to athletes where they can then take online classes but still compete in their sport. A lot up in the air obviously. I also wonder if we do get to a point where in person classes are ok for fall if schools still want to avoid large gatherings like a hockey game and limit the attendees.

What I also liked was that their speed was used differently. McEachern was a "straight line burst out of a cannon" fast - which led to so many breakaways. Amonte was more of a "speed while decking around guys". Together they were a treat to watch.

I thought the other speedster from the 90's, Shawn Bates, was a nice blend of the two.
