BU Hockey '25-'26: Can we keep up the run to Vegas?

Not BU related, but huge college hockey news, none the less. The Gophers fired Bob Motzko. Wow.

Blue blood program canning a coach after one bad year. Is this the new thing?
 
while factual with the # of picks, and not exactly being as iffy as mlb drafting…nhl drafts are highly sketchy when it comes to playing in the nhl.

That was always Parker’s take too. If you’re just going to the minors, stay another year.

This is why I don’t get the Eiserman signing. If he had an amazing season next year at BU I think he could have gotten a big deal. If he had a meh year I think he gets the same deal he just got. So barring injury I think there was only upside to staying.

Edit: yes, I know financial terms weren’t disclosed but this structure doesn’t scream big money
 
Cole H. looking pretty comfortable in his Caps debut.

Makes me think a little bit that, as odd and backwards as it may sound, the pressure on some of these guys at BU to perform and dominate every night can probably be pretty opressive. Obviously your NHL debut is going to come with plenty of pressure, but I'd bet my Brendan Walsh gamer the Caps told him to just relax, play your game, and don't worry if you make a mistake.

It's a different league/world now. These guys make the big contract by proving it in the league and getting an early extension. See: Lane Hutson, among others.

Wow, got me thinking about how many Charlestown kids ended up at BU. Paul "Ensign" O'Neil, Mike and Mark Fidler, the late Billy "Fish" Cotter, Jack O'Callahan, Matt Grzelcyk. I know you BU fans know some more.

I know we’re talking about a third year but it may have been a concern for the Islanders to have him stay. I admittedly did not know this but, an NHL team generally loses the exclusive rights to a drafted player if he plays four full years of college hockey and does not sign an entry-level contract by the deadline. Under current rules, if a drafted player completes his senior season (or 4 years) in the NCAA, his team’s rights usually expire on August 15 following the end of their senior year, making them an unrestricted free agent.

I don't think this played a role in Cole's decision, NYI wouldn't have lost his rights unless he stayed all four years at BU, through 2028. So theoretically, he could've stayed through next season and they'd have the full 2027 offseason to sign him no risk to losing his rights.

I do believe it was a significant factor in Lachance's decision last spring, because he was drafted in 2021 and his draft rights would've expired if he came back for his junior season.
