BU '23-'24 Season: Pandomania

Is it just me? Or did that look like every line change that every team makes all season?

with that said they got a bury a couple more of those 41 shots on net.

attendance listed at 4,009. Not bad for a Tuesday… but why Tuesday? Weird evening for a game. Midweek games on a Thursday would seem to be a better choice.

Isn't this Beanpot related scheduling?

I'm trying not to be a Sports Radio caller here, but ... This is the second year that this team has gone into a swoon at Beanpot time. Color me a wee bit concerned.

Is some of this because Kaplan's injury cement mixered the lines?

How do they make more plays in the dirty area?

From the video and pictures I'm seeing on line today of the TMM penalty, the call looks a bit more legit than it did in person. Hutson is on the ice, the player coming off for him is farther away than Petersen is, when Petersen swoops through with the puck.

I don't know, the whole thing seemed completely inconsequential to the play that was unfolding. I don't know if BU had been given a warning or if the Keefe complaint from last meeting was a factor. Just didn't look to me like something that should be called.

I was sitting right on top of the BU bench and I thought Hutson was asking for it. He was on the ice well prior to the sequence he got called for.

It’s not a feel good call for either side, but BU is dominating OT up to that point though. Why do anything that remotely resembles TMM? A few extra seconds on the ice doesn’t buy you anything in that scenario

I’m not sure if BU got a warning from the last game where multiple TMM situations were blatant and did effect play. Warning or not they sure heard about it and should have been more disciplined.

Well, last year they went to the FF, so if this year is the same, I’ll take it.

The previous NU game was on a Tuesday as well. Which made me think it has something to do with them.

Not at all, beyond the fact that because both teams are very local. It is a convenience for the schedule makers. Both teams had a home game, and the slightly diminished gate. BC and NU have also played midweek games against each other and Harvard in recent years.

I think that there might have been some sort of conversation with the ref - to me it looked like the NU player on the far left was appealing for it. I'm biased, but I also think it was inconsequential to the play.

After getting over the shock of losing 3 in a row, we can recover a bit from this with a few wins, namely UNH and BC in the next 2 games. We should stay in the top 4 and in the hunt for a #1 seed in one of the regionals. Lose those games, and well, that becomes real difficult in all likelihood . It’s difficult to predict what the other teams around us will do the remainder of the season. I think we’ll get back on track. The puck just doesn’t want to go in the net easily right now. All teams usually go through a stretch like this at some point. It’s good that it’s not late March or April! I’ll trade some tough times right now for a great finish.

If someone put me in front of the team I would tell them to up their joy. Playing hockey is fun! Fling that puck around with some purpose and urgency. Find the joy in playing for each other. Keep your head up for shot opportunities and then be difficult to play against in front of the net.

BU Hockey: Team Psyche Test

I'm glad to see Jack Harvey on the wing with Macklin. I've been thinking that would be a good move . Jack was a top scorer for the Chicago Steel last year, largely because Macklin was his center. They apparently had chemistry and played well together. Sorta like the chemistry of the big BC NTDP-18 line. They know where their line mates will be without having to look. Hopefully this frees up both Macklin and Jack to do some serious scoring.

Yeah, I went back and watched the recording of the game. He was like two feet from the bench. Even Colby Cohen (and yeah, I know he's a BU guy) said "I don't know what they expect him to do, wait until the guy jumps onto the bench?" That was just ridiculous...almost as if they were looking for it. Reminds me of the 1977 Final Four (not called "Frozen Four" yet)...in the semis against Michigan, BU had a late PP and was going to pull Craig to get a two-man advantage. The ref actually skated over to Parker and said "Make sure he doesn't leave the bench early." So what happens? He whistles BU for too many men. It was like it was predetermined. Michigan wins, 6-5.

An overall good win to get back into a positive mindset. And we are still #3 in the PWR.

- Good to see both Jacks have good games. Harvey certainly seemed like he was at another level, though for the second game in a row, he failed to score on a breakaway.
- Not a smart penalty by Hughes late in the game. I get that he wanted the Hat Trick, but that doesn't give you license to just keep backing all the way into the goalie. I'm sure Caron and Pandolfo were pretty perturbed by that one.
- We need to shake up the PP. When Lane is just playing catch with Macklin and Quinn, we are killing our own PP. If four passes later you are in the exact situation you were 15 seconds ago, what have you accomplished? And I agree that goalies are ready for the Macklin one-timer.
- Lane and Macklin both had terrible giveaways that Caron bailed the team out on. I've been saying since last years playoffs that teams are going to learn how to defend Lane's jukes. He needs to start moving into keeping it simple mode, at least in our own end. Save the juking for the offensive zone and power plays.
- Willander has regressed, though I expect him to bounce back. There are many plays where he seems to underestimate the opponents speed and ability to close in on the puck, turning what should be a clear win for the puck into an even battle or a loss of possession.

Some thoughts going back to the prior games:
- Fowler is an elite goalie who has a shot at making the NHL. It shows. Caron is a very good goalie who can by all means backstop us all the way to the FF. But to me, BC gets the edge there.
- BC also gets the edge on high-end forward talent. Gauthier and the three first round freshman are simply impossible for any team to match. However, when Tuch, Peterson, Lachance, Kaplan and Stevens are on their possession game, Greene is on his game, and Zabaneh actually buries a shot or two, I think our depth helps balance the forward situation out.

Enough, already. Hutson got caught trying to grab an unfair edge. Allowing him a two foot head start is like giving an average player a five foot jump, especially in open ice where he can skate freely. BU got away with it in the previous game. At worst, it’s evened out. Whining won’t change a thing. Let’s hope both teams can settle the matter in the Beanpot final.

Not playing Harvey has been the biggest coaching mistake imo and have mentioned it in the past . He is super skilled and young I get it but let him learn in game conditions he would be further ahead right now.
