Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

After reading about the incoming freshman players, it seems like they eventually will become good four year college hockey players.
However, I worry that none have the ability to contribute much during their freshman season.

I think Collier has the chance to contribute right away as will Somerby. It may not be scoring necessarily but I think both will contribute from the get go. You need Hohmann/Rodrigues- like jumps from Kurker and Lane more so than the freshmen to contribute right away. I don't think anyone expected O'Regan to have the year he had as a freshman this time last year though so you never know.

I hope I'm wrong about Somerby, but any 6 foot 5" defenseman that was only drafted in the 5th round will have a very tough time catching up to the speed of hockey east during his freshman year. (see Tom Morrow)

Any expectations on D should be tempered. If they were "good" at this age they'd be in the NHL were many awful dmen currently reside.
We'll have good nights and bad nights.
Fwd are miles ahead of dmen where we sit and watch.

Lane was vastly improved over the last few games.

Yeah he was drafted last year(2012) though. Who knows what round he would have gone this year? He is going to be your 4th dman at best which I think he can hold his own there.

I think Quinn will breathe some fresh air into the program and as a whole they do a little better than we expect.

Let me revise that: I am hoping...

Coach Parker is throwing out the first pitch at tomorrow's Red Sox - Yankees game. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. Not sure his pitch will be.

Darn, I was offered tickets to this game and can't go. :(

If I had to pick a freshman forward to make the biggest impact, it would either be Baillergeron (no idea how to spell it) or Roberto. I think Collier could take a little time. But it's not like I've been scouting these guys, so I could be way off.

I agree with BUoldtimer - Lane showed improvement over the tail end of the year, as did Kurker. But I think the ceiling is much higher for Kurker. I see Lane always being a 3rd liner who uses speed to be a pest and an effective PKer. Not sure he has the scoring touch to be a top-2 line guy. If he does have it, great, he could turn into a Dave Tomlinson type of player. Otherwise, he could be a Mark Mullen type with more speed and a little more potential for scoring.

Parker's pitch was pretty good. Good speed, one short hop in front of the catcher. I took a video with my phone, I will try to post it if I can figure that out, lol.

So, there are two players from Massachusetts (Cory Schneider, Keith Yandle) who have been invited to try out for the USOIHT? Sheesh!!!

Not a MA kid, but a BU kid: Shattenkirk will be on the team.

So there has never been a good freshman dman? ;)

good is relative.

i think we can all agree that offensive skills come before defensive. both fwd and dmen. playing defense that will keep you in the nhl is a skill that is learned, acquired. yes.

now, an 18 yo defensemen that is nhl ready goes straight there. think pronger, think bourque.

some may think they need time first. brian leetch was an outstanding defenseman while at bc. he probably could have gone straight, but wanted to play olympic hockey. you remember back then when we sent amateurs, right? ;)

so my point is young dmen still have a lot to learn and make mistakes. i try not to be too hard on them because the offensive skill set of the guys they are facing is generally further advanced than their skill set.

Pronger turned into a beast, but he had some mighty struggles that first year with the Whalers. I remember the Whaler fans wondering what all the hype was about when they first saw him out on the ice. He might have benefitted from a little seasoning in the AHL, but I guess it all turned out well in the end.
