Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

I only got one call from Quinn! You must be higher up the totem pole!

I've gotten like 4 I think. I'm waiting for him to call me personally instead of the recorded message so I can give him some advice on running the team. ;)

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

I'd like to see a "family fan cost index" comparing the college hockey schools around here.

What is the cost at each arena for:

4 Tickets
Parking
2 Beers
2 Waters or Sodas (I don't buy my kids soda)
4 Hot Dogs
2 Ice Creams

Without figuring it out, I'd bet Agganis is the highest by far.

For BC:
4 tickets in family section: $40
Parking: Free
2 Beers: N/A
4 Hot dogs & 2 drinks: believe they have a family meal with this and it's $15
2 ice creams: absolutely zero idea, but let's say $8?

Total: $63

Young alum discount is the price BU does best so I don't think it will have the price disparity you want.
$289 for 17 regular season games no matter the location of the seats (would have been 18 if not for Frozen Fenway)
$6 more if you include the exhibition
$45 if you include 3 HE Qfs
$15.45 per game
$50 for Friends of Hockey membership
$17.73 per game

Not bad at all for center ice tickets with intermission snacks and post game desserts while you are ages 22-32. It's the walk up/family crowd that is being priced out

Checking my card, I paid $368 for a pair (includes HE QFs)

Granted I don't have lower level center ice but those seats haven't turned over in forever.

So $10.82 a game for the upper deck corners at BC vs $15.45 to pick any seat at BU. Center ice lower bowl is worth that $4 and change to me. Like I said this is the one good deal in HAA.

For reference do you know what a lower bowl season ticket with YA discount at Conte is? I don't see it online.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

...if you're not really dedicated or live right nearby, I think those are the people they're losing despite all the phone calls we get from Quinn. :D

Agreed. Now that I take commuter rail to work, there is no way my wife can come to the games unless she wants to either 1) drive in, or 2) take commuter rail to North Station (one hour and twenty minutes), get on the green line (another 20 minutes including if you don't catch a train immediately) and spend $24.00 just to come in so she can meet me. After being gone from 6:00 - 6:30 every day, I really don't want to get home at 12:30 a.m. after a Friday night game, especially if she is not going to the game. And, I come in five days a week and by Saturday I don't really want to come in again. And for those who drive, the parking is what? $12 now?

The problem is, once you stop going it becomes easier and easier not to go back at all. It would cost us $100/game between the tickets, travel (no matter which way we do it) and food. It just isn't worth it at this point in my life. What "they" need to understand is that for those of us who have "been to the top" (I was at ALL of the championship games except for 1971), it's difficult to justify to watch "this" team the last couple of years. And what compelling reason is there for those who have NOT seen them win it all? At least we have the memories, the tradition, the pride. There is no "legacy" for more recent fans (new graduates) - the last time BU had a great team was before those people were in school.

And, I hate to bring up ad nauseum the school "up the road," but the reality is, for the "casual" fan (not a BU die-hard), I think it's obvious where they would choose to go watch a game.

I have watched almost all the games this year on either All Access or TV. I'm still trying to come up with the right word to describe what I have seen. I don't want to say "sluggish" or "tentative," but whoever mentioned a while ago that they just don't seem to have any "energy" was pretty much on target. They're just not really enjoyable to watch (and I'm not even talking about wins and losses). I can recall when Agganis first opened, there was sort of a "rebirth" and an infusion of enthusiasm. It carried through until around 2010 but it has been gone for awhile now. I think until they can find a way to get that back, there are going to be more empty seats.

ADDENDUM: And I even thought about this: BU always seemed to have the best "athletes." They would display a higher skill-level. Maybe that's why they were more fun to watch. Maybe that gap has decreased (or is gone), because that does not appear to be evident any longer. I don't have the confidence that they will someone "find a way" to pull out a win simply on talent alone. Please don't take this the wrong way anyone, but after what we've been used to, it feels as though I'm watching Lowell or Merrimack play. Boring...and I know Lowell wins. And that's the point. Boring...

Moral of the story... don't live in Fitchburg. I hope you're getting the express in and out of Fitchburg/N Station every day.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

chickod has a good point about the team's play. I'd say again though it comes down to a lack of talent. Nobody stands out when you watch them play, which I personally thought O'Regan would be doing by now. Plant another Drury or Wilson on the team and people would come out I think if you know you're going to see a star player night in and night out. For BU to justify the expense of making the trip, they need to give the fans a much improved product on the ice.

BTW, as much as I dislike the team, watching BC play at Agganis was a treat in terms of seeing a well skilled team play the sport. Tape to tape passes even when lifting the pass over a defenders stick, wide open players on the goalie's weak side, behind the back passes, one-timers, etc. That's what people will pay top dollar to watch.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

There is no "legacy" for more recent fans (new graduates) - the last time BU had a great team was before those people were in school.

And not even what happened in 2009 is enough to retain a newer generation of fans (re: young alumni). Sustained excellence - like the 70s and 90s, is what's needed. When you see who the die-hards are at Agganis, it's pretty safe to say most of them became loyal fans during one of those stretches.

That's why they have Eichel coming in next year:D

Bottom line is they need to lower the single game prices/ have some good deals on 3 game packages or they won't sell out besides BC,Wisconsin, etc.

If you pay to park for BU home games, then you're a chump. There is always plenty of parking at meters(I'm not telling you which ones because I don't want you all stealing my spots) and down Babcock,St Paul etc. I have been to every home game the last two years and have paid to park 0 times unless throwing a few quarters in a meter counts as paying to park.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

Right now it is an "all of the above" issue… better results, a couple of more dynamic/flashy players, better price point (including all of the associated costs) and attendance would rise quite a bit.

By the way, shouldn't we all be on our way to see them playing Harvard right about now? In general I'm not a fan of mid-week games, but this was one mid week night I always felt was a great night to have a game.

Well what is the bad news about "bu hockey" coming in a few weeks?

IIRC, at least 2 of the three guys talkig about this had said there was going to be another bad thing after the nicastro incident... I'm tryin to recall if there was another incident after nicastro that season?
