Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

Wow...surprised to see this score, but obviously pleased. O'Connor must have played a good game. Nice to see four of the freshmen forwards with goals already. I hope Tommy Kelley is ok.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

Attendance 5129... not bad going against the Sox. Wisco had a fairly big following there as well.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

I know it's only been 4 games ... But I am impressed with the work ethic of this team. Also, it's easy to tell that they respect their coach. It's early, but by hearing Quinn's comments, you can see that Quinn is a good x and o's coach and has a great vision for the program. (Let's make the tourney this year and we should be loaded for the next few years)

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

I'll take credit for the stupid comment but that Wisconsin goalie couldn't stop a beach ball tonight, with a very talented team in front if him.

The Badgers goalie was not good. The Wisconsin fans must have been baying for the return of Brett Bennett.
I was not overly impressed by their talent. They are a good team, goaltending aside. But nothing that should scare a decent Hockey East squad.

BU is fortunate to have two quality college goalies in Maguire and O'Connor. Both a very good shot blockers. I'd give an edge to Maguire, because he is better with rebounds. But I'm confident when O'Connor is between the pipes, too.

The work-rate of the team has been more consistent in the early going. The benching seems to have lit a fire under Kurker. There doesn't seem to be as many high energy and lull periods, just a consistent solid effort.
I paid particular attention to Duane for a few shifts. He is anything but fast, in fact he's pretty slow. But he works hard and puts himself into good positions, and has contributed positively.

This team can be pretty good as it grows up.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

For a #2 ranked team I did not expect a blowout like this and even after a 2-0 timeout by Eaves, they could not cover or keep up with the speed or cover anyone period. I don't know if they just gave up or what but no one thought they would be this bad. I even felt sorry for their fans, the game was so lopsided and to travel all this way and to be tooled by both Boston teams is demoralizing.

I saw some good talent in their forwards, but at the same rate, when your goalie is letting in some of the utterly asinine goals he let in last night, you play with less confidence in your own game, afraid to make a mistake because it could lead to a cheap goal.

That said, I was actually more impressed by RPI's overall talent than I was Wisconsin.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

I too thought we'd be seeing tumbleweeds blowing through the stands going up against the Sox, but a good showing for both BU and Wisconsin fans.

Tough to tell too much about BU's team since the goalie let in everything, even the shots aimed directly at his chest. Did somebody leave early or a recruit back out on them? Can't believe this is the guy they wanted to go into the season with. I do agree they play hard and aren't taking half the game off as they had in previous years.

All in all I'd say they're getting closer to where they need to be.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

I missed the RPI game, but I saw the Wisconsin game and the few things I've noticed are:

1. Oksanen has improved so much it's hard to believe he's the same player from last year.
2. Lane is fast and he has also continued his improvement from the end of last year.
3. Kurker finally figured out how to use his size. I remember watching him all last year waiting for him to hit someone or muscle someone off the puck but he never did. A guy that size should not be taking tripping or hooking penalties. On Saturday there was one particular shift where he just went out and started shoving Wisconsin players off the puck clearing the area around him and gaining possession of the puck for BU. Good game for him.
4. That 5 minute powerplay was not very good. They scored on right at the end, but for the most part it was slow and disorganized. Overall the powerplay seemed good (3 for 6), but with the poor goaltending, those numbers are probably a little skewed.
5. I didn't see exactly what happened when the Wisconsin player went into the net and completely leveled O'Connor so I can't say how bad it was or if he just lost an edge or something, but what I did notice was that Hohmann (probably the smallest guy on the ice) had absolutely no hesitation in standing up for his goalie and going right after the Wisconsin player. Major show of leadership and being a good teammate right there.
6. I also didn't see the hit on Kelley and since Agganis refuses to show replays. Anyone out there who saw it? How bad did it look?
7. I absolutely loved that BU didn't let up and stop playing hard after they took a big lead and they played hard for 60 minutes. In the recent past, we've seen them quit after going up by 2 goals. This team wants to score goals and it seems like Quinn is going to let them do just that.

The next month is going to be big for this team. Two against North Dakota, two against PC, one against BC, and one against Michigan. Those are tough teams. I think this team should realistically look for 2-3 wins from those 6 games and look to sweep the remaining games in that period (Uconn, Maine, and Michigan State).

1. Oksanen has improved so much it's hard to believe he's the same player from last year.

This has been the biggest thing I've seen as well. He's been insane. Through the first four games definitely the best and most consistent player on the ice for BU.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

Yup. And also to Munn on Saturday.

Cool. I'll be in town for bidness, so I'm going to try to score a ticket for Friday night's game.

Have you heard of any FOH/Alumni/rando USCHO poster meet ups planned for the games? I've been looking online to find something, and I haven't seen anything.

I also thought he looked pretty darn good at the beginning of last year, and then something happened and he looked like a totally different player. Hopefully, he can keep his level of play up for the whole year. But either way, it's definitely an encouraging sign.

I think their #1 stayed in Wisco with an injury or something... also even if he was the guy they wanted to go into the season with, sometimes things don't work out the way you would expect. Remember our 07-08 goaltending debacle?

Last year I thought Oksanen was very good moving the puck out of the zone. Great hands, really good passer.
Wasn't as good carrying it out because he was a little slow, but both puck handling and skating seem vastly improved.

He has always had a nice, hard and low shot. But he didn't shoot enough. Now he is pulling the trigger.

Also seems stronger, and more physical defending.

He is playing with confidence, and well he should be.

There are no FOH/Alumni organzied events at either place. As for random USCHO meet ups, that's always a possibility. I've been there before and met a few outside behind one of the nets but I was told that they don't do that any more. Am trying to get an updated location. I'll post when I find out more.
