Oh geez. We recycle topics here don't we? Starting the whole "BU isn't a huge sports school, a lot off international kids and there's a lot to do in Boston." What's next? "BC isn't in Boston"?

Ok...here are my mortal locks.
Friday: ND 5 BU 2
Saturday: ND 5 BU 0

Is the season over yet????

bu beats bc in something this year!! :D

3 BU players beat 3 BC players and Poulin is the hero. As always BU only wins when I am rooting against them, haha.

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

BU actually promoted this game very thoroughly to students, as a somewhat recent alum with friends still enrolled I am still privy to those promotions. It obviously wasn't reflected in the attendance, but at this point I can't come up with a strategy I think would work to build a basketball student crowd.

Kids don't go, it's promoted a lot and Johnny freshman decides to give it a go with his friend, they realize there are only 20 students there and ignore all future promotions about it. It's a catch 22, it's not fun because no one goes, and no one will go til it is fun.

The price changed between December and February, they sent out a questionaire in that window? If so I missed it. If not I doubt they just now acted on a survey from late last spring.
The game was marketed pretty heavily... It kinda seems like the fans want perfection because the attendance never recovered from the high against a crappy Loyola team (our highest attended game, the t-shirt giveaway also might have contributed to that) after they suffered their first conference loss away from Agganis. Every week we get a "Terrier Rewards" email that mentions all the sports games that are happening this week and the bball game was marketed as the game of the year. In addition, if the student liked the BU athletics page, highly unlikely that they did, they would see that it was also advertised as the game of the year there as well.

One of the problems with the "Terrier Rewards" problem was I wound up getting some prize at some point but I had to go attend a women's basketball game just to pick the thing up. It's like my past attendance to lots of sporting events hadn't been enough. This kind of soured me on the promotion.

I might get some crap for this but I actually think one of the biggest problems that prevents fan support is having the Red Sox right here... students tend to funnel all their fandom into the Red Sox and their success has made the Red Sox into Boston University's most supported team. I will never understand the draw of pro-sports, oh well.

Not sure who he was hanging around with but BU was by far the biggest contingent in DC even though I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the turnout of the other 3 schools.

I was in the balcony directly ABOVE the BU section in the lower bowl, so perhaps it seemed as though they weren't loud because the sound was blocked, whereas the sound from the other areas of the arena could be more clearly heard. And I suppose it sounded that way because the only people cheering for BU were the BU people - the Bemidji, Vermont and Miami people were all cheering for Miami. All I know is, when Miami scored to go up 3-1 the place just erupted. But I guess my point is this: even in 1978 in Providence, Wisconsin had more fans than BU (BC had practically nobody but that's another story). And that was 40 miles from campus. This is not meant to disparage - it's just a simple fact and I don't know why everyone is so defensive about it. It's a big deal to those of us who were lifelong fans, but it's not even on the radar of most other people.

And on another topic completely...regarding the women's gold medal game. It's Canada's game. Just like basketball was ours (except for 1972 when we got screwed by the refs against the Soviet Union). When we sent our best players, we NEVER lost. It was our game. It's hard to explain...the US didn't blow the game. The Canadians RAISED their game because of national pride. They ALWAYS do this. They did it in the 1972 Canada-Russia series when Henderson scored with like a minute left in the final game. They win games like this all the time. The men did it at the last Olympics (and the men will beat the US tomorrow, too). And just think of this. Canada DID NOT SCORE A GOAL even strength the entire game. They scored with the goalie pulled twice and then on a power play in OT.

But that aside, that was one of the BEST HOCKEY games (men, women or anything else) I have ever seen. I just feel bad for the US Women, because they will take this one to their graves.

BU Hockey: Benedict Arnold

Several times this season, usually 24-48 hours before tip-off, Agganis (the ticket office, not the poster :-)) has offered free b-ball tickets to hockey season tix holders. Have taken advantage of this 3x this season and from my observations, the response rate has been tepid. I don't think it's made enough of a difference in attendance despite an entertaining and winning product.

I've taken them up on that a few times as well. It's a nice perk for being a season ticket holder. I too was wondering what the response has been. I'm sure they have gotten a few extra fans in the seats. But I agree the response does not seem to have been huge.

The games are entertaining and the team is fun to watch. Would be nice if they had a bit more of a following. Without being more nationally relevant though it's going to be a tough sell. I know that the Partiot league is a step up from America East, but I don't ever see them banging out the place for games against Colgate and Lafayette.

We are not the only ones. A quick scan of Patriot league games is showing attendance from the low 2,000's and below.

In the "if they didn't have bad luck they'd have no luck" department.....the hockey flew out this morning at 10:30, due to fog got diverted to Louisville. Took off, got diverted to Indianapolis. Took off to St Louis, and just landed in Chicago. Now they have a 2 hr drive to South Bend.

What programs do you think make the league a step up from the top of the AE with Vermont Albany Stony Brook for example ?

Oh geez. That's a layup. The AmEast is a total joke. Middling schools with middling programs. Bucknell, Lehigh, American...all better academically and athletically. The AmEast did just add UMass Lowell and the rest of the SUNY system though. NJIT not far behind. That conference will be gone in 5 years. Be serious. The Patriot League is not the ACC or Big Ten to be sure...but wow...The AmEast is awful. Been over to their website lately? Straight out of 1995. It can only be viewed on a PowerMac 6100 running Netscape Navigator.

Maybe the time together will help them gel on the power play? Three SHG against in the queue.

Patriot league almost always has a higher conference ranking than America East and Patriot League team in NCAA tournament is almost always a higher seed than the America East Bid.
