This topic comes up whenever things get "lean." Does the AD care? Of course. Does the President care? NO!! You have to understand that, a few hard-core fervent fans (especiallly those of us who have been around since BU was a "commuter school" in the 50s and 60s) aside, BU is NOT a sports school. As has been mentioned here many times, there is a HUGE international population that couldn't care less about hockey (in general, before anyone lambastes me). "Casual" fans will show up when the teams are winning. Regarding basketball, the problem has always been that once a coach comes in and starts to build a winning tradition, he moves on, because BU is a steppingstone job. So there is no continuity. When Joe Jones leaves, we'll go back to the bottom again and start rebuilding. I mean, can anyone blame him? You could take almost ANY New England school and argue that more than 20 fans would show up for a winning BASKETBALL team - a much more popular sport nationwide than hockey, which is a regional sport (again, don't lambaste me those of you in denial who still insist that we can "grow" the game to become as popular as the three "major" pro sports). As I have stated before, there is competition for the entertainment dollar here. This is not Madison, WI (no disrespect intended) or Grand Forks, ND where thousands will show up no matter what because it has been established for years as the premier attraction in the area. Even when BU won in 2009 (and I have mentioned this before, as well), their fans were outnumbered in EVERY arena they appeared away from Agganis. I'm not disparaging the people who showed up, because that's like preaching to the choir. But I sat at Verizon Center in DC and remember twice as many people cheering for Miami. You can say that's because they were the "underdog," but my point still stands: BU has a SMALL, albeit it vocal following (when they are winning) and it evaporates quickly when they are not. And even winning in 2009 could not blunt years of lackluster performances, which had slowly erorded the fan support. If it weren't for the still relative "newness" of Agganis, the crowds would have been even less. Just accept it and move on. We are not, nor will we ever be, Michigan football or UCLA basketball. Just because we may be one of the "elite" Division I programs in a sport does not equate to the rabid, almost religious fervor that is generated by these other schools. This is Massachusetts - it's just not like that here. If you're looking for that, go to Texas or Miami or Notre Dame. It's just not going to happen here. Aren't we getting tired of these discussions about why the "fan support" is not better. MOST fans are fair weather. They'll show up if the team wins...not because they're that "into" the sport, but because it's the "thing to do."
