That was my take on it... and you could see signs of it catching up to them in the 3rd period of the Friday night game.

There were pretty much three forward lines and five defensemen rotated all weekend long. I can count on my hand the number of times Ronan touched the ice all weekend.

Surprised no one has mentioned the PC-BU brawl, I believe was either in 1993 or 1994? The scrum started behind the PC net and not long after, all the players on the ice had gotten into the melee. The most memorable part was when BU goalie J.P. McKersie skated at full speed from the other end of the ice to the roaring approval of a packed Walter Brown Arena to jump into the battle.

1966 Beanpot vs. Harvard Fred "Bear" Bassi who boxed at the Boston Arena under the name of Fred "The Iceman" Bassi, decked Tag Demment of Harvard at Center ice!!! That was BU's second Beanpot Title, the first one coming in 1958 and started a great run of Beanpot titles.

so what?
these are young men who are in shape (or better be) and should be able to play all night.
how come kids only a couple years younger want to stay on the ice for 3 minute shifts and have to be yelled at to change? because they are young and can do it!! so man up already!! LET'S GO!!

After Mike Boyle left as strength and conditioning guru I offered to replace the "Body by Boyle" program with "Body by Rover", but never heard back from the school. I bet they're regretting not taking me up on my generous offer now. ;)

ummm. he has a pretty big operation still, right. they still use his company for all the same stuff. just because it's not boyle himself but someone he hired to work for 'body by boyle' means that they don't condition athletes the same?

yowza! :D

Not sure but my offer is still out there.

the difficulty in getting the puck moving from behind the BU net was an accident waiting to happen all game...the one man forecheck looked like a Celtic's full court press, I thought we were going to get a 5 second call or have to call a timeout. The number of poor passes, near misses and their resultant impact on the flow out of the defensive zone made the game painful to watch. Not much good happens when getting it past your own blue line is a huge achievement. With all due respect to Vermont, that wasnt the world champs BU was playing.

While what you are saying has merit, we do have to remember they are skatin against young men who likely have as equivalent to or similar level of fitness... So over time rolling fewer guys will be a disadvantage over time.... I'm not a big excuse guy, but the reality is that it could be a factor.

I with I had paid attention to how much Vermont / BC / Lowell were playing their 4th lines.

1) it's not like uvm played 18 guys friday, then came back with 18 fresh guys saturday. right?
2) if they dress, they should play. this is bu hockey. if they ain't good enough, don't give them a sweater. that's their team, roll with them.

but whatever...

I thought you were kidding, but I guess not. You really aren't seeing the difference between 18 guys who played normal minutes last night, and ~14 guys playing the minutes of 18 guys last night? You're right about the second part, but we clearly don't have a team of world beaters out there, and rotating three lines and five D is putting any team at a major disadvantage against a team rotating four lines and six D, regardless of talent. Your second point clearly applies to the mental and skill mistakes that are rampant right now, but not to them getting tired.

If one team is playing 18 guys and the other if pretty much playing 14, will one have an advantage over time?

Mook's point is if the 4th line dudes are wearing sweaters, send 'em out there. And I agree. Clearly coach thinks he only has 9 D1 forwards and 5 D1 defensemen. A lovely state of affairs.

kinda like cutting off your nose to spite the face, no?
--i can see the 0-8-0 road record cause you don't get last change, but send out the 4th line (which is sooooooo terrible  ) against uvm's 4th line.

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

Mookie needs to stop whining, check his eligibility and suit up! If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself....

If the players on the team don't fit into Quinn's play style and they don't have the talent, the least they can do is condition themselves to be in better shape and have more endurance than the other team. If you're short on guys and you know you're going to need to play lots of minutes a game, practice your conditioning. That's like organized sports 101. If you have less talent, outwork the other team. It doesn't take skill to beat opposing players to a puck or to shove them off of it. If they truly don't have the ability to execute whatever genius strategy Quinn has that is so far above their heads, then he should just be running conditioning practices. And as far as this team "running out of gas" vs opponents, BU is outmatched in speed and hustle from the opening faceoff not just late in games. This team is completely lacking in both speed and strength. Does anyone know if they keep stats on passing percentage? I would bet this team is under 70% and they couldn't have been higher than 60% in that last game. They seem to have found a way around this problem though with their new favorite passing target being the boards. I think they played the puck off the boards in the last game more than actually attempting a pass to a player on their own team.

That conditioning you are talking about would have had to have happened over the summer and in the fall.

I'm only using this as a couple of examples, but I don't think they were out hustled for the first two periods of the Friday night Vermont game or in the first period of the most recent BC game. I think what you are saying is true in some other games though… Bentley etc.

It was certainly true on Saturday. Out-everythinged.

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

You can't teach speed or necessarily condition it. Either you have it or you don't up to a certain point. This team with the remaining players it has is too slow to keep up with the rest of the league. The solution isn't to spend more time in the gym, its to get better players. We could all train with the best instructors out there, but none of us would be making the Olympic track team most likely because there's a limit to how fast we can go. Same concept here. They can't beat people to loose pucks when by the time they've taken one stride the Gaudreau's of the world have taken 3.
