Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

Watched the BU-BC game on TV and I thought they looked pretty good. Can't fault them on the BC PP goal which was a beautiful pass and Gaudreau scored another and there's no shame in that. However, they have an inability to control the puck that I don't understand this late in the season. The 4th goal maybe was get another giveaway right next to the goalie and the 5th goal saw a rush go through two BU defenders who avoided the puck like it was a grenade. Not sure if its nerves of something but settle down and control the puck and a lot more good things will happen, like maybe keeping the shots on goal under 40 for our opponents.

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

So BU is now in its longest winless streak (8 games) since at least the '98-'99 season (can't find any game by game results beyond that) when they went winless in 7 straight. They were 8-14-2 that year at the end of January. On the bright side, BU broke that streak with an OT win against BC in the first round of the Beanpot. They then went on to beat NU in the Beanpot Championship game. They also went 25-10-7 the next year. So here's to false hope.

In terms of number of games, this is NOT the longest winless streak in BU hockey history (discounting the Dick Decloe season* when they “lost” every game from November 23, 1972 through January 13, 1973, even though they were 11-4 on the ice during that time), but it’s getting close. In the 1961-61 season, from December 21 through January 30, they were 0-9-1 until they beat Dartmouth 9-4 on February 1. That was Coach Harry Cleverly’s final season behind the bench. In the 1987-88 season, from November 30 through January 12, they were 0-6-3 until they beat Wisconsin 10-6 at WBA on January 13. Fun Fact: They followed that winless streak by going 9-2 from January 13 through February 17, with the two losses coming to Northeastern (2-1 at Matthews Arena on January 19; and 6-3 in the Beanpot Championship game at the Garden on February 8.) The co-captains of the 87-88 squad? David Quinn and Tom Ryan.

*Argo eff yourself, Cornell & ECAC

I agree and thought they played pretty well in the 1st and 3rd particularly. I'm no "x's and o's" hockey coach, but it seemed as if they were trying to get back to playing BU hockey.... strong forecheck and backcheck, play with an edge, keep it a bit chippy etc, pick the smart moments to attack on offense.... I agree a little more puck control would go a long way. Hopefully they can build on some of the good stuff this weekend.

Injurys though... my god I don't ever remember a team being so shorthanded. Are we going to be able to dress a full lineup? Any word on Athi?

Being that the case, why didn't Quinn assure Kurker that he'll be skating regular shifts when healthy ? There's nothing more valuable than playing time and experience. I'm assuming he left because he saw the writing on the wall of not being allowed to play regular shifts.

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

Just had an email pop up from ticketmaster with a buy 3 get 1 free promotion for remaining home games for BU hockey.

I hear what you are saying. That would be a question for Quinn and Kurker to answer. I'm always baffled by these mid-season departures as if packing up and blowing off school and your team is no big deal.

Perhaps the conversation went something like this...

K - Coach, may I speak to you for a minute, please?
Q - Sure, Sam, what's on your mind?
K - It's not happening for me here, is it coach?
Q - No, Sam it isn't.
K - I'm starting to think I may be better off somewhere else.
Q - Now that you mention it, Sam, maybe you would.

Not in last place yet. If we end up there BC will have beaten BU FOUR times this season...The Eagles are running away with it.

Small consolation but the shoe used to be on the other foot. BU will be back, your program is too good to stay down

Four times? They are playing BC three times. What am I missing? BC would get a bye in the HEA playoffs so BU wouldn't necessarily play them.

Any word on the extent of Oksanen's injury?

FreeP generally has their sit down with Quinn on Thursday evenings, so give it 30 or so hours to see what he tells them. He was reportedly walking around postgame with a noticable limp, but that means it is likely not worst case scenario with a torn or broken something.

Fingers crossed. In the 11/27/2010 game vs. Brown, Adam Clendening took a knee/knee hit which looked as bad as what happened to Oksanen. Helped off ice, was limping noticeably after the game, but was back in the lineup a week later against BC.

Hopefully it's nowhere near as bad as it looked.
