Amen to this and Rovers follow-up comment. Where are the Doug Friedmans of the world He played on the 4th line, worked his way up to the first line as a Senior Captain.

I don't fault Kurker for leaving in this case, because things clearly aren't going to plan. It doesn't seem to be for any reason other than talent/skill level. He has had a year and a half to prove himself and it hasn't happened. Being a 2nd round draft pick obviously adds to the pressure he is feeling. It's always a challenge to guess how someone will do at the next level. In this case, perhaps the experts were wrong and he won't be more than a Doug Friedman-type. There are worse things in life than getting a free education and playing 4 years of hockey at a great program.

Friedman went from walk-on to 40 point scorer and reached the NHL, albeit for just 18 games, but had a nice 7 year pro career.

Jofa's right about the Kurker's parents pressuring Jack to let Sam go from HS to BU. In the past when kids wanted to arrive before JP thought they were ready, he said, "No, thanks." Pat Cullity and Peter Starrett are two that come to mind.

Unfortunately if Eichel shows up he will be gone before the dmen show up. I think you are looking at 3 yrs from now for BU to be in the top half of HE again and have a shot at NCAAs

Assuming Eichel will be one-and-done is a mistake. I wouldn't be surprised if he's here for two years like Wilson. #44 ranked D MacLeod arrives in 2014 and BU isn't done adding for next season.

FYI--Wes Myron, who thought he should be on the top two lines, appears to be out of hockey after 17 ECHL games.

Jofa's right about the Kurker's parents pressuring Jack to let Sam go from HS to BU.

In some ways it was a "perfect storm" for Kurker to gain leverage to pressure BU into bringing him on as a true Freshman. #36 in 2012 final NHL Central Scouting Bureau rankings. Roster spots & scholarship money available due to:

Alex Chiasson turning pro
Ross Gaudet opting to not use his final year eligibility and moving on after graduating
BU and Fall 2012 recruit Robert Polesello mutually parting ways
Robbie Baillargeon and Jarrid Privitera both pushed back to Fall 2013 incoming class

FYI--Wes Myron, who thought he should be on the top two lines, appears to be out of hockey after 17 ECHL games.

Yasin Cisse also appears to be out of pro hockey after only 9 ECHL games.

Myron had been invited to the Canucks' training camp and was amongst the 1st wave of players sent down to their new AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets. He failed to make the Comets as well and his hockey whereabouts since have been unknown.

Two years with good recruiting I'd say. The O'Regan/O'Connor/Oksanen/Grzelcyk senior year is the year for them to start making some noise. They're going to need a good underclassmen second line like they had in 2006 when Yip-Higgins-Lawrence showed up to back up O'Regan's line, and then a couple of servicable D men.

i don't think it is a stretch to say when you look at the numbers coming in over the next few years and the low, low number of graduates -- that quinn is more than ok with people leaving. that there may be a number of guys that he feels he can do without.

and let's not confuse nhl drafting with an exact science. any of you can go look at any of the past drafts and see how many 1st rd picks never make it, or are lucky to get a handful of games in the nhl. they are kids when drafted and it is not a kid league.

kurker may be a great kid (hoky likes him), but he has appeared lost while playing for bu. good luck to him.

and high school hockey... well from what mookie has gotten to see over the last two years -- these kids would have trouble making college club teams. anyone worth anything is playing for the jr bruins or other teams in those leagues. from travel-to-juniors is where the talented kids are playing. sure, you will find a kid who wants to play for his high school with his friends every now and then who has actual talent. but that is the needle in the haystack.

I remember this story, and the rumors that he threatened to decommit and go elsewhere if he wasn't allowed to come in fall 2012. I remember hearing from a friend close to one of the players around April of 2012 that they were working to "finally lock down Kurker, once we do that, we can move on to the rest of the recruits."

Being happy playing div 1 college hockey and getting a free education is not the ultimate goal. Sucks for us as fans because we want to see a cohesive committed and talented team play at their best. Too many individual goals interfere with that mindset.

They DO understand that a four-year education costs a quarter of a million dollars, right? They DO understand that without a college degree getting a meaningful job in today's market is highly unlikely, right? HELLO???????????

Not one of them would have ever paid a quarter million dollars, that is the dumbest thing I ever hear. They might at tops pay 15-18K, the vast majority 5-10
Maybe a 40K degree, not 250

I laugh at the number of times I see a kid who was bummed he didnt get a scholarship to a Hockey East school, a 2/4 or whatever and ends up at an ECAC school that doesnt give them. All in, they pay far less

Just saw it with a kid who turned down a 2/4 and ended up paying 2K per year at St Lawrence

None of the players playing football at Alabama pay 250K, 98% would have paid maybe 15-20 k over 4 years

The players are 18 or 19 years old. They have stars in their eyes. The parents are supposed to be the source of reality and reason.

why? the kids at the hockey east schools not on scholarship would get the exact same financial award. they are all need based.

I don't think there's anything wrong anymore. I do think we're seeing the residual effects of the problems the team's had in the last few years.

They're shorthanded due to 1) disciplinary problems, 2) guys who pro-level talent leaving, 3) guys who thought they had pro-level talent leaving even if they couldn't crack 5 goals a year in college.

Disciplinary problems seem to be cleared up as old coaching regime which trusted the players a little too much to police themselves is gone and I'm not aware of any off ice incidents recently. Pro-guys leaving happens everywhere so it is what it is. No talent guys leaving is addition by subtraction and a by-product of bad recruiting and/or constipated offensive style that may have stiffled some of them.

Eichel, etc can be paired with remaining talented players (O'Regan, Balleraggeraggeragegerron, O'Connor, Oksansen, etc) to form a good team in relatively short order if he's the can't miss prospect he's supposed to be.
