Brown Women's hockey coaching problems

Re: Brown Women's hockey coaching problems

It's my understanding most, if not all, are still at Brown. That may be telling.
Meh. Transferring from Mercyhurt to Wisco may be one thing, transferring from an Ivy league school to another school just for hockey is completely different. I sure as hell wouldn’t given up an Ivy education no matter how dedicated to hockey I was. For 90% of the girls, this all ends in 4 short years....and I’m guessing the girls at Brown are smart enough to know that.

Again, I don’t think there is much more to this story than the fact that Brown is simply uncommitted to the women’s hockey program and probably only keeps it around for title purposes. Like I said before, it’s extremely disrespectful to the girls not only playing at Brown, but to all college hockey. Beyond that, Dig is past her prime...happens to all coaches and nothing to be embarrassed about and nothing to take away from her glory days of the past. Time for a little shakeup.

Brown Women's hockey coaching problems

Captain- bergey1 had commented and I quote-"If everyone has such a problem at Brown, why not contact the AD or something as opposed to keep bringing it up on a forum where no results can come out of?"

I was responding to that statement. It may be better to contact the A D, yet, 'results' can come from bringing it up on a (this) forum.

Re: Brown Women's hockey coaching problems

Just for the record, Ragen transferred to the Hurst after she found out just how much monies Brown costs (get in my wallet!)....I learned that after I personally blasted her here on the board. So that’s at least one loss accounted for.

It is MY understanding that many of the girls who have been exiled have started a "club league" in which they get to continue to play - although not competitively. It seems those girls are committed to playing hockey, at any cost. It's not that easy transferring out of an Ivy League school in your third or fourth year, just to play hockey. These girls are between a rock and a hard place.

Re: Brown Women's hockey coaching problems

My first women's hockey game was in 1999 at Bright Center with Brown as the opposition. Exciting game with Harvard prevailing 6-2. Back then, Brown was a national contender.

Since then, I've watched Brown steadily decline. I hesitate to use the word 'listless' but for lack of a more appropriate term, that is what I am seeing from this team.

As far as Coach Murphy, her incessant yelling and complaining to the refs the past few years has become tiresome and boring. It's clear that her team does not listen or respond to her and perhaps the game has passed her by.

The Crimson have suffered some defections this year as several players left the program. This happens every year when a big freshman class comes in. However I sense the problems at Brown are more severe and it would be unfortunate if this was not resolved to everyone's satisfaction. Either bring everyone together in one room and try and resolve this or fire the coach and bring in someone new. Do it soon before the program disintegrates.

Brown fans, what say you? Do you even care?

Brown Women's hockey coaching problems

In my day Yale had the, 'Cougars' (mens), Dartmouth had the 'Hanover Storm Kings'; Wesleyan and Williams and schools around Boston also had clubs. We played even Industrial League teams. Many bloody lips at the Lynn Arena. Didn't want much to go digging in the corners. As well as disaffected members of the college team we were populated with players from other programs, some quite good who came to the area for graduate school.

Re: Brown Women's hockey coaching problems

I too would like to hear from some Brown insiders. It is DEFINITELY not too late to fix or save this season and I think your suggestion - to get everyone together and work things out - might be a viable option. I'm glad to see it's not only me :(

Wow, I should leave town more often - now don't everyone jump on that not-intended-to-be-controversial statement. IrishBridie has pretty much defined - or highlighted - how one approaches Brown's coaching problems. You definitely cannot present your concerns to the coaches themselves, nor to the AD. Sometimes public pressure can be a good thing - if only if it forces the administration to take a good, hard look at the status quo and see how it goes.

Voicing your distaste for something annoymously on a public forum is far less constructive than being up front and honest in person.

Re: Brown Women's hockey coaching problems

I am happy that this situation is getting some attention as it is giving voice to the voiceless.

Faceless voices have no substance to an AD or coaching staff, quite the opposite !.

There was a similar thread last year about another D1 coach at another school.

Lots of teams face internal issues you never hear about unless you are part of that team. When people start sharing their own teams dirty laundry on air they are IMHO no longer part of the team.

I find it ironic that the two times Brown has been blown out in a game this year people come out of the woodwork to comment. Some commenters appear to either have an axe to grind or are in some form associated with the team but unhappy. Way to support your D's team. NOT !.

As Pops Ryan already indicated, maybe it is time for a change, but sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for. Sometimes change means even more casualties along the way.

If you are unhappy, have an internal discussion face to face to deal with the issue at hand. You are not gonna solve your problems by posting here.

Further to this...I have been watching this thread grow while biting my tongue hoping it would lose it's legs and now we have cookie or whatever beating the drum again. Over 1/3 of this team is from Western Canada so I happen to have some insight into what's happening in the dressing room. Yup hockey players read your posts.

You (anyone posting Brown/Murphy bashings) here is tearing this team apart.
Stop! Go and spew your venom somewhere else. You should all be ashamed of yourselves....

Ordinarily I would agree but when there's a dictator in control, questioning authority is a suicidal act....just sayin'

And might I add, if the disgruntled few here have the goal of having Digit ousted (which appears to be the case), it will probably cost your daughters' their hockey careers as well.

Trust me, when the players (or their parents) make things bad enough for an AD that s/he has to remove a coach, the AD as well as the next coach will remove all of the source of the trouble so as not to be the next victim of the revolution. Happens in sport (and business) all of the time. And in hockey, there are no whistle-blower lawsuits.

My advice is to cheer your team on and (unless you are a major contributor to the athletics department) keep your thoughts to yourselves. You'll be doing your daughters a big favor.

Unfortunately, voiceless faces have no power either so sometimes there's nothing left but publicizing your plight. It might be too late for some but if there's a greater good to be served then I'll keep on posting.

I, too, find it ironic that some very familiar posters remained silent on this thread until I voiced my support. And loyalty is more important to me than offending some of you skywriters. A lot of good kids aren't playing this year and the sheer numbers alone tell you that there's more than a "team commitment" issue going on here. Hence, my support for the voiceless...

Dear ccookie79,

If questioning authority is a suicidal act................please do and let the rest of us continue in peace.

I would suggest that this thread be done away with. The damage has been done. I feel sorry for all concerned especially the TEAM.

Good one, except it was the kids who lost out, not me. Your response, to stifle free speech, is telling. Agree with me or else.....

Perhaps if this thread overwhelms you, you might stay off of it instead of being .... without peace.

am i a coward too for also thinking brown needs change?

RStarr...We all know you are not a coward. ;) :D

IMHO there is a big difference between:

- constructive suggestions from outsiders "A change is Needed"
vs
- Insiders "Calling for the Coaches head" or "Spewing Dirt" on this forum.
