Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

I didn't think we had much of a chance against Colgate. I'm so happy to be wrong.

Can't afford a letdown tonight. As Kepler said, we're still in the running for the Ivy championship (which isn't all that important) and this is a chance to close the gap between us and the current first round bye teams (which IS important).

No championship is unimportant, particularly when it carries with it possession of a trophy and a banner entry.

When was the last time we won it? 2002-03?

I suppose I can just check the banner tonight at the game. :)

2004. 2003 was Cornell's Frozen Four year, 8-1-1 in the Ivies. In 2004, Cornell and Brown shared the title at 7-2-1. Since then, it looks like Brown's best finish was last year at 3rd. Link

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Exciting, intense game at Meehan tonight... stolen by the officials.

Cornell was called for a couple ticky-tack penalties, and the Bears did a good job of playing a clean game. But I think you're referring to the quick whistle on what would have been a Jacobson goal in the early third. Not reviewable. Puck clearly still alive. Terrible, not atypical, though.

I'm going to refrain from any commentary on the game as a whole until I'm less emotional and more objective. But one thing I think is worth noting is how much whining Mike Shaefer does. Every single call - icing, offside, penalty - results in his berating the officials. And it paid off - because in the third, they definitely goofed the goal judging - even if Cornell did play its system pretty well.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

After a few hours of cooling off...I'm still incredibly mad about the third period tonight. But there's nothing we can do about it now.

Andy Iles was spectacular tonight. That was our real problem. And Cornell was very strong at clearing bouncing pucks in the crease and rebounds. Brown, I thought, was very sloppy throughout (though the third was much better). Cornell seemed to wear us down to the point where guys were dogging it at the beginning of shifts. I thought Robertson was a huge disappointment, as was Lorito, and you can't have your best two players have an off night against freaking Cornell and expect a result.

Time to cut our losses and look forward to the Capital District. Hoping for two points out of the weekend.

Can't lose games like that. I can't blame the refs when you can't score a goal at home until the last two minutes.

But we did score another goal. At worst, this should have been a tie.

I was behind the net on the top concourse and so were Jason Klump and many others. Klump live-tweeted the goal. (Lynch is the ref he refers to.)

Jason Klump ‏@Jason_Klump
Triple jam chance on Iles and it slips under him and over the line. Lynch wasn't in position in time and waved it off very late.

Then, a few minutes later:

They are not reviewing it. Whittet asked and they refused. That's a travesty.

Later:

No one in the building had a better look at that last play than me. That puck was in the net way before the whistle.
Look at the tape. It will show Lynch scrambling to get in position behind the net.

And when the game ended, 2-1 Cornell:
Have to say Brown got screwed a bit in this one. Both teams played well tonight.

Klump tweeted Mark Divver, the Prov. Journal's (excellent) hockey writer, asking if he knew what caused the refusal to review the goal. Divver replied:
Ref told BW that goalie had puck & he blew whistle. If that's his ruling, then apparently there's nothing to review. Strange

The Cornell coach was on the refs ALL NIGHT. Or, as Divver tweeted during the game:
Mark Divver ‏@MarkDivver
Mike Schafer works the refs like Red Auerbach back in the day

Then there were the missed calls like this one in the first period:
Jason Klump ‏@Jason_Klump
No call as Lorito gets pushed from behind and knocked off the puck in neutral zone.

Fierce game by both teams, Iles was brilliant and really shut us down on some great opportunities, and when he didn't, the net posts did. But I'm sick of the bad officiating when it throws a game like this. There are FOUR officials on the ice. Why can't they be where they're supposed to be and see what is clear to everyone watching the game?

OK. Moving on.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

They screwed Yale the night before on a no goal as well. Cornell, is a nasty team though. They really work the corners in the opposing teams offensive zone as well as any team I have seen this year. Really wore Yale down physically as well.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Can't wait to see the highlights from last night's game. I absolutely lost it screaming at the refs after the two Brown goals (since they initially waved off the second one, as well). As I was standing above the goal, I might be in the camera view.

Should be fun to see! :)

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

On another note, I'm just grateful we're at the point where we can be disappointed with a loss to #11 in the country (and also a team riding a nine-game unbeaten streak) in which we outshot and outchanced them...and it wasn't close to our A game. Missing Pfeil and Lamacchia didn't help, and I thought we were too sloppy with the puck, which I mentioned before.

A couple years ago, this game would have been viewed a success. The fact that we're all so mad about it shows the program's progress and where we expect to be.

As others have said, we CAN blame the refs when we SCORE a crucial goal that is TAKEN AWAY because the refs were badly positioned. I watched the third period with a friend from concourse behind the net. Both of us confirm that the puck went in.

Brown outplayed Cornell for most of the second period and dominated the third period. Unfortunately Nick Lappin hit the post after he skated around at least four Cornell players. It would have been a highlight goal.

Nothing anyone can do. On to Union and RPI next weekend.

Sounds like everyone on this thread was watching from the concourse behind the net! I guess we know where the diehards gravitate to.

Any of the Brown faithful coming to the Capital District this weekend?

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Fun fact: Brown is the only team BC has played since Thanksgiving that BC has NOT beaten. This is a total juggernaut and the fact that we outplayed them is pretty great.

If we played every game the way we played that game, we would win most of them. Every team that has beaten us this year is (or was) a ranked team.

......

I vote we get Brown out of the ECAC and move them to Hockey East ;) .
