Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

The reason I pick on Lorito is that in the past, he's been much less selfish in terms of distributing the puck and making plays. Maybe teams just figured out how to defend him, but it's been frustrating watching him skate around the entire offensive zone and then turn the puck over.

Good observation. RPI played him well. he would carry the puck in but RPI always had someone going after him when he did so, and he appeared frustrated.

Game time decisions on whether the injured D-men play this weekend?

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Heading into a home-and-home weekend, I'm not sure what to expect or even how to feel about the Bears' season right now.

Any predictions/concerns you have about the two games?

Two wins!! Even if defense is depleted.

Yes. I'm 100% sure that except for power plays, there will be six players on the ice (including goaltenders). There will four officials (two referees and two linesmen), who will make several odd calls though not as bad as the Olympic hockey officials, who can't hear their own whistles or call offsides. Both games (against Princeton and Quinnipiac) will last for sixty minutes (unless the teams are tied after three periods, in which case they will be a sudden death overtime extra period). The ice surface will be 200 feet by 85 feet. The ice will occasionally be bad because 1. Brown is too cheap to fix the ice problems; 2. We have to spread limited resources among 37 teams -- you know, everyone is really excited about wrestling and fencing this year.

You see, hockey is totally predictable...

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

A win against Princeton is simply a necessity. Anything less would be a massive disappointment.

I don't like how we match up with Q. Garteig (their goalie) has a great GAA but a subpar save percentage, which is indicative of an average goalie playing behind a great defense. As we saw against Cornell, we have trouble picking up rebounds against big, physical defenses.

It's time for Hathaway to show why he wears an "A" on his chest. Get to the net, outmuscle your man, put the puck on net. He's not a finesse player whatsoever, and he needs to stop playing like one.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Start DeFilippo. Mix up the lines/defensive pairings/special teams units. Something needs to change. That was the worst effort I've seen in years. And now we've lost 5 of 6 and are barely clinging to home ice. A month ago, we were discussing the race for a bye. Now? We'll be lucky to hang on to a home ice spot, at this rate.

Pfeil's presence is greatly missed, as is the resilience that apparently graduated along with the class of 2013. Who knew that a class full of mostly no-names and a goalie who waited until his senior year to break out would be missed so greatly? Now, we can't defend, can't score, and our goalie makes two or three spectacular saves a game while allowing two of three soft goals.

I can't recall a time I've felt so numb during a game. I just had a gut feeling we'd lose after Princeton scored that third goal.

And the biggest surprise of the night- I was behind the net in the second period with some of the regulars, and we were screaming at the refs for some brutal calls (unsportsmanlike conduct on Naclerio? For what? Receiving a pass in a scoring position?), when a Brown police officer walked over and told us we had to stop heckling them. He was reinforced by a RISD student, who was nearby and didn't appreciate our harsh tones. That's right- not only did a cop tell us to shut up at a HOCKEY GAME, but a RISD student came over and told us we were being inappropriate.

I've been going to Meehan since I was an infant, and I can't say I've ever heard of that before! :)

And no- I'm not going to stop yelling at the refs. They can drag me out of the place if they want, but I'll yell until my vocal chords tear.

I agree with everything you have above about the assessment of the game, but one. Naclerio did play the goalie's stick out toward the point, which is a penalty. It was, sadly, the right call, for what it's worth.

My takeaway on the rest of it is similar. Steel has not been the same goalie since the first period against Yale. He lacked focus last night on several occasions. Defensively, I thought Wahl and DeConcylis were poor at best, and Robertson was inconsistent. I didn't think that Lorito-Lappin-Naclerio played all that well - caught in the "we have to do everything" mentality at times. However, what is most troubling continues to be that there is no second line to which we can look with consistency. Hathaway, for all his potential, has never morphed into the Harry Z/Volpatti power forward we've needed. He reminds more of a faster Antonin Roux, minus the occasional 5-minute penalty. Hourihan can kill penalties, but if his line is on the ice at 5-on-5, there's little to no chance that there is going to be a goal scored.

So now that I have that off my chest, I think what was most disappointing about last night for me was how Princeton had a tactical advantage - consistently - all night. Princeton gave the Bears the points, and Brown put pucks either weakly on net or into the legs of defenders. Yes, Lamacchia and Lorito missed open nets, but the two goals Brown scored were on a penalty shot and on a kick overturned by replay - also, the right call.

Where is the confidence? Where is the heart? Is it time to start playing chicken little hockey - aka, the sky is falling? Personally, I'm disappointed, frustrated, aggravated... all told, now we're looking at Quinnipiac, a team with whom Brown does not match up well against, a post-Beanpot Harvard, Dartmouth, and then Union-RPI. It's conceivable that this team could lose out at the rate they're going.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Ah- I didn't see Naclerio hit the stick. I was focused on Lorito (who had the puck in the corner), and all I saw was Naclerio receive his pass and then the whistle blew.

After watching that mess last night, I definitely know how I feel about the season: heading rapidly down the tubes. It was so bad, I kept wondering if our guys all had the flu. Do they?

Quinnipiac today: To go or not to go to Meehan? In a snowstorm. (No, I don't live in Providence.) Leaning toward "not." But... I hope to be pleasantly surprised, which shows that hope really does spring eternal in the face of all evidence!

The one indisputable fact that I've learned after 17 years watching this team can be summed up by The Shawshank Redemption: "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."

From what you're saying, it appears that the athletic administration has, in their infinite wisdom, outdone themselves once again and outlawed cheering at Meehan. Their attitude seems to be: "Who cares about support for hockey team? Just pay your ten dollars and keep your mouth shut. Remember that it's all about football and basketball."

Brandon Pfeil's skills have been greatly missed. Last night the whole defense played very poorly. Tyler Steel continues to be inconsistent, with a spectacular save often followed by a soft goal.

I was standing next to kdiff77 and can confirm the silliness that he's described. Evidently the order to silence the fans came from above. There was absolutely no need for such an order. It was just spirited college heckling. No threatening or four-letter words were used. Evidently this is how the fans should address the refs from now on: "Sirs, we believe that in exercising your authority as officials, which we, as members of the august Brown University community, not only recognize but are also grateful for, you have incurred a few errors, which may have affected the outcome of the contest at hand. In the future we would be deeply thankful if you made an effort to avoid such misreadings of the rule book."

Certainly no way to inspire faithful fans. I can understand quelling over-the-top behavior and limiting f-bombs, but heckling is part of the game.

I'm not trying to start anything, but anytime I've been to Meehan the place has been dead. If this mandate is coming from the top, it will only serve to make matters worse. If you can't be vocal at a hockey game what's the point in going?

Good luck this afternoon. Sadly, I'm not making the trip today thanks to Mother Nature, so there will be one less loud QU fan in attendance. ;)

It's probably for your benefit that you won't be there- you don't want to upset the RISD students! :)

As for the game: Brown had better come out FLYING after last night. If I were Brendan Whittet, I wouldn't have even gone into the locker room after last night's game, just to send a message.

My theory is that since Christina Paxton was at the game, someone in the athletic department didn't want to look bad in front of her.

God forbid a bunch of fans are showing their support for the team that represents the school.

I'll be spending the next three hours memorizing this speech before the game today.
