NOTHING! Yes, there was a story about the Brown game but it appeared to be nothing but a condensed version of Jean Carhart's write-up. Here in Albany there is very good coverage of the area's two D1 schools, Union and RPI. While some may say that is the result of a down year for Siena BB, I am not so sure about that. It would simply appear that the media in two different markets is responding to the interest or lack thereof in college hockey.

The Providence Journal sports page is terrible. The writers are absolutely awful. As far as hockey coverage goes, I don't bother with the Providence Journal any longer. I come straight to US College Hockey Online. The two USCHOL writers whom I follow, Brian Sullivan for ECAC Division I and Tim Costello for NESCAC (Division III), both write intelligent, elegant pieces that are a pleasure to read.

Couldn't agree more. The only thing in the Projo Sports section worth reading these days is Bill Reynolds' weekly "For What It's Worth," and even that just sounds like an old guy rambling on and on after a while. USCHO is the only good source for college hockey. CHN is pretty decent, but not quite on USCHO's level, and INCH is absolutely terrible. Fortunately, we have this site, or else we'd all be lost.

It's a shame that Brown and PC get no support because college hockey is the most entertaining game played in this state by far. No other sport played here has so many future pros involved or is so intense. PC hoops gets some good players of course but a tiny percentage thay will play in the NBA. In college hockey every team has a player or two with a good chance of playing in the NHL. You can't necessarily say that of the P Bruins and the P Bruins brand of hockey is slow and boring--it has to be with 82 games and often 3 games in 3 days.

I don't understand what people in Providence are doing on riday and Saturday nights in the winter--watching TV? It's a puzzle

Local fans in general don't identify with Brown despite the fact that the university, including many of its athletic teams, is very involved in projects that benefit the community.

Going to dinner in one of the city's dozens of great restaurants? Attending excellent theatrical performances in one of Trinity Rep's three theaters or at PPAC? Attending concerts at Veteran's Memorial Auditorium or at one of the several universities in the city? Etc, etc.

I attended the Bruins-Devils game last Tuesday at the Bahstin Gahden, and Harlow was honored during the 2nd intermission along with a female counterpart for the John Carlson, as the 2nd article details. I was very surprised and excited to hear "Matt will be attending and playing for Brown University next fall" after his introduction. Very encouraging!

I had the opportunity to see Harry Z play Tuesday and then talk with him after the game when his team - Adirondack Phantoms - was at the TU Center to paly the Albany Devils. I thought he played a strong game. He had terrific goal, reminiscent of one of his goals against Cornell. He was still playing his style of chasing at full speed every loose puck. He has 3 goals in 10 games. What I saw was 100% good Harry. No bad Harry, even with his team racking up some 70+ minutes in penalties. He had a cross-check called against him which was questionable, but no mouthing off to the ref. The ref was Mike Emantian(sp?), who I believed reffed awhile ago in the ECAC.

I enjoyed talking with him after the game. He was genuinely pleased to see some one with a Brown hockey Hat!! He did comment that it is quite a difference from playing and hanging out as a team with the "boys" at brown and the AHL where that comraderie is absent, especially with him joining the team so late.

All in all Harry does represent Brown quite well.

Very nice, Mike. This is a great situation for Harry and excellent publicity for Brown hockey.

MOMENTOUS CHANGES COMING TO BROWN HOCKEY

Only someone living on a different planet would have understood my April 1 post about "momentous changes coming to Brown hockey" as anything other than an April Fool's prank. Nevertheless, the Brown Atheltic Department didn't find the post funny, and asked me to remove it. Even though satire and parody have consistenly been reaffirmed by the Supreme Court as protected speech, I've agreed to remove the post and to replace it with a couple links dealing with the legal matter of satire and parody as protected free speech.

I'm sorry I didn't see your post before you removed it but the response from the Athletic Department seems to reveal a complete absence of of a sense of humor on their part. Is there any way you can send me the post privately? I know how to contact you (EVERYONE knows who Euler18 is). Hopefully you'll be discreet about my identity...

I don't think sending you the post would do any good. It was a joke that only made sense on April 1. Except for the Brown athletic administration, everyone who saw it here or to whom I sent it privately thought it was hilarious. A few people even said it was "brilliant" though I wouldn't go that far. No one was ofended, and the people who were "quoted" seemed particularly to enjoy it. Everyone I talked to was puzzled by the humorless reaction of the Brown athletic administration.

On the other hand, I appreciate the fact that the athletic administration is under a lot of pressure these days. The Brown athletic operation is terribly underfunded. These are people whom I like and respect. They do a good job under difficult conditions. But maybe they could have cut me some slack as they would be hard pressed to find another Brown faculty member who has supported the athletic operation as strongly and as publicly as I have. Most of my colleagues either don't care or think that athletics is the place where cuts should be made. Athletics doesn't have a lot of friends in the Brown faculty.

Ultimately college athletics are young men playing boys' games, or, as former Brown basketball coach and cancer survivor Mike Cingiser, who knew his priorities, once said, "basketball is long men in short pants" (though fashion has changed, and basketball 'pants' aren't so short these days...). Young men dying in unnecessary wars, THAT's serious.

This is quite possibly one of the few times I have ever heard of a school trying to censor posts on this board. I've heard recommendations to do as such with websites and discussions with administration if it involves someone hired by the school, but in all reality, there really isn't much of anything they can do about it if you are not within one of these groups, and even if you are, the best they can do is terminate employment, and you could probably even take that to court. I assume you are a representative hired by the school?

Regarding the part about Brown coaches being paid $18,000 less than the league average:

I think it's good that we seem to have locked down great coaches, as well as loyal and committed to Brown on a long-term basis in the three sports I follow most (hockey with Whittet; football with Estes, who has been nothing short of brilliant since 1998; and Tiffany for lax). Fortunately, these men have been willing to take lower salaries to stay at Brown, rather than moving on. This is particularly true of Estes and Tiffany (Whittet just started head coaching, obviously). Last off season, Tiffany turned down the Penn State lax job. True, Brown has been historically more successful, but combine Penn State's assets and Lar's "Brown State" mentality, and you've got a championship contender every year. We lucked out, Penn State offered him a salary probably triple the one he makes at Brown, and yet he stayed at his alma mater anyway, despite later remarking that Penn State means almost as much to him as Brown does because that's where he started his coaching career. Estes, on the other hand, has received multiple coordinator jobs from D-I FBS, which would pay significantly higher than the Brown job and would be more prestigious, but for some reason, the UNH grad has never expressed any interest in leaving. This is incredibly fortunate for Brown, because before Phil, we had won one Ivy League title. Since he's been in charge, we've won three.

It sucks that Brown athletics isn't as well funded as it should be, but I'd say Brown is remarkably competitive in most sports for such a comprehensive department with so many financial constraints.
