BouncyBall 2013/2014

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

The problem is that he owns the team. It's probably not as simple as someone saying "you have to sell", like some of the talking heads are demanding.

I think the NBA will do to him what MLB did to Marge Schott and George Steinbrenner. Basically ban him from any sort of operations, or control of the team, for a set period of time. Put him on a short leash. When he screws up, hit him again, but harder. Eventually they all die anyway.

So how about the following scenario. The Clippers win the NBA title. New commissioner Adam Silver then gets to present Donald Sterling the championship trophy.

I'm not sure whether this would be Theater of the Absurd or an episode of The Twilight Zone.

Silver could just elect to present the trophy to the Clippers coach or the GM. Its their league and they really just need to give the trophy to somebody in a suit don't they so that it doesn't look out of place when they're doing presentation montages in 2023.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

Anyone see the article about how some smart aleck LA Times columnist said Sterling should buy a hockey team so he didn't have to deal with black people. I posted it in the hockey thread if anyone wants to see it.

Banned for life from any association with Clippers or NBA. Max allowable fine of $2.5 million. Three quarter vote of NBA owners can force sale of team. Seems likely that will happen.

Good, but this guy should have been out years ago.
The league is doing something now, but after reading about his legal issues as a slumlord, it's wrong the league turned a blind eye to this guy's actions and attitudes for so long.

Bill Maher said it best:

Sterling def. a racist, but take away his team? Clippers shldn't have played yesterday? Calm down, being an a$hole is still legal in America

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

I'm not a law scholar by any stretch here...

Can Sterling make any kind of stand in the process of selling the team? Claim that he thinks he's not getting "market value" or something like that since the sale is forced? Or can the NBA just say that he has till X-date to move the team or they will no longer sanction them playing in the league?

I'm curious how that end of things will play out since we're talking well into 9-figures to purchase a major league team... No matter who you are, that's a lot of coin in your pocket...

If it wasn't legal in America, Maher would be in big trouble.

No surprise the NBA came down on him hard, and he deserved gettting hit hard. Of course, anyone who follows the NBA at all knows that Stirling has been a bad apple for a long time, so some of the sudden outrage is a bit much. It'll be interesting to see how they try to force Stirling to sell the Clippers. The guy is a lawyer and seems to thrive in court. If he wants to fight to sale, it seems like he's got some avenues to make things quite difficult.

I'm curious what exactly being banned for life entails, given that he's still the owner of the team and therefore has to have some level of involvement. It's not like Pete Rose, where he was banned, but didn't own a team or have that type of built-in interest.

The Jabbar column was an excellent read.
