Boston University off-season thread (preparing for 16/17).

Yikes you guys are sensitive. I even put a smilie in there.

I hope Matt O'Connor's coaches weren't at the Comm Ave Classic tonight.

High praise for Jordan Greenway and David Quinn from the Minnesota Wild's Director of Player Development.
http://wild.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=889485

“I’m just incredibly excited, I think we all are, for the type of player he has become in one year and with the player he may become,” Bombardir said. “The best thing about Jordan is that he knows what type of player he needs to be. How is going to play at the next level? How is that game now translate to what it’s going to translate to in the NHL?”

Bombardir credits the job of BU coach David Quinn and his staff for the job they did in Greenway’s first year of development and said the situation for him with the Terriers is one that should continue to produce results.

“David Quinn is an outstanding coach and he loves Jordan. He really feels that he’s going to be a great player for us, as do I, and as do all of us in the organization,” Bombardir said. “They style of play that BU plays is an NHL style and you can exactly see where he’s going to fit in that and where he fits there and where he fits into the system here.

“And he’s accepted that, ‘This is the type of player I’m going to have to be, and I’m willing to be.’ And he is. He’s a net-front, offensive juggernaut on the wall where he can get pucks and it’s hard for guys to get the puck off him.”

If Matt O'Connor was an investment, he'd already be written off as a total loss. ;)

I understand that Fortunato is leaving. What's the story? He's still young enough to return to juniors, but that would seem to be quite a comedown. Turning pro?

If true, he's nowhere near ready to turn pro. I believe as it stands now, with Fortunato we have nine D? Would make sense if one of them ended up feeling like they could get more PT elsewhere.

Re: Boston University off-season thread (preparing for 16/17).

Interesting. There was talk on these boards of him moving to forward, so if it is true that he is leaving, perhaps he doesn't want to go the Ahti route. Or frankly, maybe he doesn't see himself beating out 12 forwards for a regular spot. I don't see him having a prolific pro career as a defenseman, just too small and doesn't have the same build as a Grzelcyk to make up for the size factor.

BU was never his first choice and likely wrong fit for him from beginning.

Re: Boston University off-season thread (preparing for 16/17).

Is that your fellow poster who posted a few things this past season which have yet to come to pass?

Certainly not! Nor do I know Mark Divver. I just have a soft spot for players from Long Island as there was zero opportunity for me to play when I was growing up there.

DQ is trying to be the hockey version of John Calipari?

Now that he has gone undrafted, it makes a lot of sense for Fortunato to transfer. He needs to put himself in best position to sign as a UFA

BU, loaded on D, is not the best spot for him to get noticed as an undrafted UFA. He should choose a spot where he's guaranteed top-4 mins.

I suspect Fortunato entered the offseason anticipating one or both of Somerby/Hickey to leave, opening more of a spot for him to get PT. With both back, Fabbro and Krys coming in, Fortunato at best is fighting for the 6th spot with Diffley, MacLeod, and Switzer.

I heard rumblings going back to April/May about him possibly being asked to play forward. Don't know if that happened, but if it did and he decided he only wanted to play D, the irony is (according to my source) Fortunato spent much of last Summer playing forward alongside Bracco & Milano while home on LI to develop confidence in his shooting ability.
