Re: Boston University 2015-16 thread part 3 - The Postseason
I know we'll never get this info but I'd like to see the data HE has on money lost from ticket sales by moving Friday start times to 6pm vs money generated by the TV deal.
There were only 4 Friday 6 PM games. There were also 4 Friday 8:30 PM games and 2 Sunday afternoon games (both at UML). There is no way to track lost ticket sales, since they were never sold. However, in looking at attendance figures for the ten Friday and two Sunday games 5 were above the home school's regular season average and 5 below: for the 6 PM games it was 2 and 2; for the 8:30 PM games it was 3 above and 1 below; and for both Sunday games they were below.
Date - Day - Time - Team - Att - RS Avg - Notes
10/23/2015 - Fri - 6PM - ND -3751 -4838 - Saturday game 3781
11/13/2015 - Fri - 6PM - PC - 3033 -3001
11/15/2015 - Sun - 5PM - UML - 3960 - 5615
11/20/2015 - Fri - 6PM - BU - 4494 - 4676 - Saturday game 5003
12/6/2015 - Sun - 1PM - UML - 5216 - 5615
1/15/2016 - Fri - 6PM - BC - 7884 - 5344
1/22/2016 - Fri - 8:30PM - UConn - 6442 - 5238
2/12/2016 - Fri - 8:30PM - UMass - 2111 - 2868
2/19/2016 - Fri - 8:30PM - UNH - 4955 - 4839
2/26/2016 - Fri - 8:30PM - MC - 2398 - 2373
The first Friday 6 PM game at Notre Dame was below their RS average by close to 1100, but the Saturday game had almost the same attendance, so it might have been more to do with other events going on and not the time of the game. The BU game appears to have been affected by the time as it was 180 below the RS average and the Saturday game drew over 500 more fans. Attendance for the other 2 Friday 6 PM games were given as capacity, so even if not everyone actually attended all the tickets were distributed. The two Sunday games had a bigger impact at UML, as the 11/15 5 PM game was 1655 below their RS average and the 12/6 1 PM was 399 below their RS average. The 11/15 game was likely impacted by the 4:25 PM Patriots-Giants game, but the 12/6 game was likely not impacted very much by the 4:25 PM Patriots-Eagles game, as it started at 1 PM and ended at 3:26 PM, an hour before kickoff. However, both Sunday games are a strong reminder about the perils of scheduling games on Sunday afternoons during the NFL season. So overall, no real evidence that the 6 PM games dramatically hurt attendance.
