I wonder if Diffley gets another start over MacLeod. I assume Olsson is out. McAvoy needs to stay under control - he'll be fired up with the big crowd at the start of the game. Hopefully the refs stay out of it.

Should be two very good games tonight.

Can't make it tonight, as my son has a game....will be watching a little delayed on the tube.

Not looking forward to hearing Tom Caron use the phrase "in the nation" 50 times.

Same line-up as Friday with Diffley, who played well against Maine and Merrimack, paired with Somerby. NU's third line has Roy skating Collier and Kurker.

A milestone win: 1,500 victories for the program. Also 51 semifinal wins out of 64 tournaments.

Hard fought win over a tough NU team. That game was pretty even, Maguire had some great stops and the d and f blocked lots of shots.

BC looks very tough to beat right now.

He did redshirt his junior year due to injury. He is eligible to return next year.
O'Connor was eligible to return this year, too.
We will see what Maguire will do.
BU has Oettinger coming in from US Jr Team, LaCouvee will be a junior. Prawdzik is the proverbial third string walk-on guy, with some potential.
If Maguire comes back, does LaCouvee?

There were thousands of empty seats at the Beanpot first round. Whole sections on the upper level that didn't have any bums on them for the third period of the first game or any of the second game.
Is the Beanpot still hot?
It is certainly not the hot ticket that it used to be.

The problem is that two of the four teams are almost an afterthought in the tournament.
Northeastern shows up every year with plenty of enthusiasm and some hope, and go home disappointed.
Harvard? Do they even show up? Do they even care? Ted Donato was coaching in his 12th Beanpot Tournament, and will be playing in their 11th consolation game next Monday.

Harvard hasn't won a Beanpot since 1993. Northeastern since 1988.
There is no player on the Huskies that was alive the last time they won. Maybe some seniors from Harvard?

The Beanpot is a two team tournament, and has been for 23 years.

In 64 years, there has NEVER been a Harvard vs. Northeastern final. And it could potentially happen two out of every three years of the tournament. But never? In 64 years?
Pathetic!

The Beanpot never gets old at BU. That is also probably true at BC, for the last decade anyway.

But for the Beanpot to be truly viable and vibrant, it needs Northeastern and Harvard to to be relevant. Which means, for the overall health of the tournament, that they win it.
That's not happening this year. Again!

I briefly posted this in the beanpot thread as well. The short answer is that the beanpot has lost / is losing it's sizzle. Attendance was about 11,700 last night so when you factor in most people only stay for their game, the arena was about 1/3 full all night.

Two snoozer games (competitive on the scoreboard, but still snoozers) and a overall "meh" atmosphere.

Ticket prices, concession prices, parking prices, the Monday night thing, and the fact that only 2 of the 4 teams have won in the past 2+ decades all contribute to this.

The championship night always does better than the first night, but maybe it is time to rethink the format (at least for the semifinal games).

One man's thoughts...

1. Beanpot suffers from national trend towards collge basketball. I don't watch b-ball, myself, but I rarely hear friends / co-workers mention college hockey. They all talk hoops.
2. The fact that top-level players leave after a year or two diminshes interest in the games.
3. The fact that recruiting is now done nationally, and in western Canada, diminishes the interest of casual fans. In the past, someone would attend because their son's high school teammate was a player, or the kid from down the street was a player. That just doesn't happen now. So few players come out of public or Catholic high schools to D1 hockey has hurt the game as far as local interest in concerned.
4. What's the O/U on how many Harvard "supporters" will attend the conso game?

True, but is the sizzle continuing to fade? At a quick glance, the attendance for the semis has a downward trend for the past 5 or 6 years.

Maybe a move to the first 2 Thursday's in Feb, or make it a Friday / Sat thing like hockey east could help some. The Monday night format is rough.
