Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

Maine weekend and no chatter/no thread? Doesn't seem right. Back in my day...But seriously, I remember when these games were bigger than BU-BC. Truly. It's not the same without Walshy. Does Jack really have Timmy's #? Will the two teams break the penalty minute record they set a few seasons ago? Does Rollie the Goalie ever see the net again?BU Hockey: Lofty

Nothing would surprise me this weekend, including a sweep either way. BU has been hot, but likewise Maine. The Terriers have shown that they can score without #10 and #3, but I loved Trivino defensively, including up at Orono. Fingers crossed that the current club can corral Spencer Abbott et al. I may have missed it but is #26 healthy for tonight?

I can remember going to Alfond in the 90's and the fans had the stick's with the cardboard replica of Parker's face on them and just HATED BU, the dislike was palpable from the ticket taker to the student section.

Everytime Jack said anything to the refs, or his players, anytime he moved his arms, anytime he changed his expression, anytime he gave the ref $500 to throw the game, the UM fans went crazy.

I don't recall the exact games but we did pretty well from what I recall...that made the fans even happier.

Just to get things warmed up...most arenas when a toothless 240 pound person is trying to intimidate someone it is a blueliner trying to kill your center...at Alfond, that is the homecoming queen.

Yeah, I can see just about anything happen this weekend. I'm gonna go with a split though. One game being a close 1 goal margin and the other being a 3+ goal blowout.

Hey now, in Maine you have to bribe them with something they really could use. Like running water to their cabins. They'll give you anything if you can set that up. :D

Pirate bring his "A" game today. Nice.

And let's not forget the water bottle game. I only wish I had seen that one live.

Other highlights include the 1991 HE Championship, the 1995 National Championship, and that crazy weekend in (94?) when Maine had to forfeit a bunch of games and dropped to 8th in HE. Ahh, memories.

Freep quoted Parker last night as saying E-Rod was 95% that he'd go tonight. Really wish they were still around here posting some of this information for those that don't use Twitter.

Also, before my time, but this seemed to be an enjoyable game to be at: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/V6IZj3J-slk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Don't forget the fight game in 03-04 when a not good BU team beat Maine 1-0 with a fight with 3 seconds left

Agganis has never rocked like that...

That GTG by Cavanaugh was a thing a beauty (god I miss WBA).

I believe the 03-04 GWG was on a faceoff in Maine's zone where Parker purposefully overloaded the right side to draw attention and told the team to direct the puck to the LD (Aufiero?) all alone for an open shot.

No RSIG and no cavernous open ceiling in WBA. Though I was just there for a women's game and was saddened to see that they covered the old tin roof with some kind of foamy insulation or something so now instead of sound deflecting off the roof, it kind of gets caught there. Better for overall acoustics since there's less echo, bad for overall noise level.

It'd be awesome for the students if they held a Midnight Madness event at the beginning of each year in WBA to give them a sense of the old place, and the homey atmosphere of it. They did it once at the beginning of 06-07 and it seemed to work out really well. I know Parker's not a fan of the event, but it'd be a really good way to hook the incoming freshman students to the hockey program instead of at a stale exhibition game.

If you miss the WBA atmosphere, where a couple hundred die hard BU students, and way fewer of the casual fans are crammed into a small arena, I can not urge you enough to attend the BU at NU game on Saturday March 3rd in Matthews.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

Saturday you can see a doubleheader of hockey at Agganis - the women take on HE #1 Northeastern at 3 pm before the men's game.

I'll admit: I was looking for myself in the crowd there. :o No luck. That year we liked to sit right behind the opposing team's bench. Give them a little grief, what have you . . .

LOL... I saw that game. It was awesome considering no one on my team was getting suspended. :D
I believe that game is a Hockey East record for most penalty minutes in a game.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

For some reason, I keep confusing that game with the game in January of 1996. That was the year Travis Roy was injured and the weekend Maine was in town was the NHL All Star Game here in Boston. The couple from Dallas that raised money for the van for Travis drove it to Boston that weekend and were guests at the All Star Game. They came to the BU game that Friday and I remember Jim Prior announcing that they were there and the crowd went nuts and I remember BU scoring to tie that game as well while everyone was cheering loudly. Am I misremembering?

Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

I have to say that walking into WBA for my first game ever...against Cornell, was enough to cement it for me, college hockey has been a big interest of mine since.

On my son's dresser is the picture of the kids sitting on Bobby Orr's lap from a UMass/BU WBA game when Orr's nephew (?)played at UMass. Not too many sports where you could run into a player of that celebrity, sitting in the stands and find him willing to take a quick picture with some kids supporting the other team.

I was not at that game, but I was at the 1991 game when the undefeated #1 ranked Black Bears came to town, and BU (5-0), with a huge freshman class (McKersie, Herlofsky, Linna, Aucoin, Brennan, Pomichter, Prendergast, Thornton), squandered a 2-goal lead but won the game when Prendergast socred a SHG with 21 seconds left. WBA was out of control screaming.

Non-Maine WBA experience still goes to the Nov. 1989 game against Michigan State.

Edit: just realized you said Agganis, not WBA. Oh well.
