Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Jack Baker was definitely not a bust in my book. He was a fun player to watch who had a decent scoring touch. Aufiero, like Dyment had two good years and two poor years, plus injuries. Kealty was definitely a big one, but he still contributed. I would put Maiser up there. I thought he was going to be the next Amonte, and while his hat trick against BC in the HE semis will be among the all-time great performances, he just didn't have much skill. Gregg - yes. Skladany, ditto. And who was it that had lower point totals each year - Scott Perry?

How about pleasant surprises? Doug Friedman, Mike Grier, John McCarthy, John Curry, Matt Gilroy, Chris Drury (sure he was supposed to be pretty good, but not THAT good)

Let's add Ed Ronan to this group.

I know his career can't be viewed as a whole yet, and he hasn't even been that great this year (but who has?), but I'd have to count Chris Connolly as a pleasant surprise considering he was completely unheralded.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Let's add Ed Ronan to this group.

You beat me to the punch on that one, buoldtimer. Ronan far exceeded expectations. I will add another from the same class, David Tomlinson. Sure, some thought he'd be a contributor. But I doubt too many expected that he would wind up one of the the top 10 scorers of all time for BU.

As for busts, anyone remember John "Jack" MacDougall? Drafted by Pittsburgh in 87' and came to BU in 88'. He had a hat trick in a pre-season game [against Merrimack?] and it looked like he and classmate Shawn MacEachern would have a big impact. Turns out we were half-right. MacDougall had trouble staying in the lineup and did not play after his Freshman year. I remember Parker saying he had self-confidence issues. Anyone know what became of him?

Jack MacDougall, there's a name that hasn't appeared on any BU thread to the best of my memory. I've wondered what happened to him, also. Unfortunately, there are so few persons who recall him, that I doubt we'll receive an answer.

Going back to the early '80's, there was a BU player named Mike Jantzi who vanished. I've wondered what that was about, too.

The days preceding the internet.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Biggest unheralded surprise is by far Johnny Curry. Not only did nobody expect what we got out of him (wasn't he HE MVP one year and runner up the other 2) but he saved the program as we know it.

Think about it - Curry doesn't walk on, and in what would be his first year as a starter the new rink opens. Instead of having a decent season and grabbing two victories over solid competition (Minny and BC) upon the arena's opening, duo of Seiwic and Gillespie lose both games on their way to a nice 12win season out of BU if we're lucky. Another losing season after the previous year's flop and restless fan base getting real nervous.

The following year, strong freshman class and decent seniors lead team to winning record, but there is no way in holy hell any other goalie finally wins them the HE championship after a decade of futility, particularly the two on the roster. Another year goes by with no hardware, and a first round NCAA exit if the team makes it. I doubt they're winning the Beanpot either (again, remember who would be in net).

His senior year would have been a disaster as goaltending tandem of Gillespie and Bennett is lucky to win double digit games. 9 ties that year = 9 losses as many were of the 1-1 variety (and a couple of 0-0's) not to mention wins turned into losses if you replace best goalie in BU recent history with worst one (Bennett).

So, upon opening new arena, it would have been losing season first year, mediocre season second year, losing season third year, and mediocre season 4th year. I have to think that would have affected recruiting. The program owes him a bigger debt than what tends to get recognized.

Biggest bust is far and away John Sabo. The guy was heralded as a can't miss savior who could do it all. Instead he couldn't do anything and had no skills that I could see in the 4 years he was here. A lot of disappointments have come through here, but he was by far the worst in terms of hype vs actual accomplishments.

I believe Ed Ronan was at the game on Saturday. And Sniper was awesome. I still remember his shorthanded goal against Harvard in the Beanpot in 1990 when Harvard had a 5 on 3. *sigh* Good times.

But Jack MacDougall doesn't ring a bell. At all.

Hey, Fed League. Any news from practice this week?

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

I dont know if you all have heard about this yet but I thought some of you might want to read about it, with the similarities to Travis Roy. Norwood High was playing against Weymouth on Saturday when a sophmore boy, Matt Brown, went head first into the boards. He broke his neck and had surgery today to stabilize his vertabrae. You can follow his progress by becoming a fan of "PRAY FOR MATT BROWN #3" on facebook.

Here are some articles with information about it. The first one mentions Travis' accident at the end.

Hockeydb has nothing on McDougall other than his one year at BU.

As a group, the heavily hyped 2001 Fab Five recruit class (Whitney, McConnell, Maiser, Miller and Klema) came nowhere near expectations. Only Bryan Miller, the least heralded of the NTDP group came close to reaching his potential. David Klema, the one non-NTDP player was was a playmaking center with very good numbers at Roseau (Minn.) HS (state champs in ’99) and in the USHL. I recall hearing some people say he would be the surprise of the recruit class. USHR reported he needed to increase his intensity, but he never did to Jack Parker’s satisfaction and was benched on numerous occasions. I recall some particularly dreadful efforts in the defensive end. Finished with 15 goals and 28 assists in three seasons.

Nick Gillis had a memorable game-winning goal in the ‘98 Beanpot championship game but never became the bigtime scorer many of us expected after setting Cushing’s all-time scoring mark.

Beyond his on-ice achievements at BU, my favorite Ronan moment came in 1997, six years removed from BU and several years after he won a Stanley Cup in Montreal. He was a late season call up to Buffalo and scored the GWG in overtime during a playoff game. A reporter tried to interview him about the goal, but Ronan told him “I gotta call Coach Parker and tell him.”

Hey, Fed League. Any news from practice this week?

Practices are closed to the media for the time being.

Or the Beanpot Luncheon?

I think BU Hammer's UMass preview covered all the important news regarding BU from the Luncheon. My Beanpot preview will run Monday, so there'll be some stuff from the Luncheon in that, too.

That's tragic and scary. My thoughts are with him and his family.

The team played again last night, and the same thing happened to another kid on the team...just an awful, awful situation...

That's horrible. I mean, hockey is a dangerous sport, but the odds against that sort of thing happening twice are astronomical. I can't even imagine what the coach, or their teammates are going through.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Ya know, I did think Bryan Miller had some skill. I thought he got robbed of a Beanpot MVP because of the media lust for Chris Bourque. Heck, Miller did all of the tough work on that GWG in overtime, too.

That class was a big time bust, though. Was it Klema that got a verbal beating from Parker at the end of the tunnel behind the bench at the old WBA while the game was going on that a few sections could see from the visiting side?

I know it. Two serious injuries in two games in a row for the same team. That's almost impossible.
