Boston College: It's Trophy Time

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

I hate to do this, but I disagree with you, J.D.-- I do not think this year's BC team will score a lot of goals. I would break up the top four forwards into two pairs-- Colin White with Ryan Fitzgerald; and Austin Cangelosi with Zach Sanford. Unless at least two of David Cotton, Chris Calnan, Matthew Gaudreau and Graham McPhee really step up, I don't see this team scoring much. Some of that will depend on who is put on a line with the pairs I mentioned. I hope I'm wrong.

Sure, BC's 5th-8th best forwards likely aren't great compared to other teams at their level, but those first four are probably the best top four forwards of any team in Hockey East (only competition is BU if the two top freshmen both matriculate, they are far better than all others IMO) so my only concerns for BC's top two lines scoring is if the defense can break out and give them the puck.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

I think BC scored a lot of goals with one super line a few years ago. With the 4 returning scorers, they have more than enough to have a very good offensive team (in comparison to most other teams around the country, not other BC teams).

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

I'm with JD here. I don't see goal scoring being a problem. The top 4 goal scorers are returning and more than half of last years goal production (94 of 156).
On D, Fitz, Savage and Kim can move the puck. A little concerned about our shut down ability though.
Net is a question mark, but Milosz has shown he is very capable in limited PT and there's a blue chippah on the way.
I'm really looking forward to this season. Hoping for a nice mix of studs and hard working lunch pail guys just gettin ir done.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald is reporting that the Caps are making a big push for Sanford.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

Appears it's done. I have to believe that even though vesey wasn't the first to do it, that more and more teams will be looking to sign college players sooner than ever. When you think you'll get three years, now you'll get two etc.

Agree with this, although I think part of it depends on the team. The predators or coyotes have a lot more to worry about than the red wings or maple leafs. College coaches (this isn't a slight against Jerry) should get guys in earlier, Sanford is old enough to have graduated so you can't blame him too much for leaving from an age perspective, although the timing is kind of scummy.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

The age factor is a very good point. For example miles wood. I can't remember if they tried getting him in earlier. If they did i thought there might have been something about how the wood family was not interested in that. When you see a player like wood dominate like he did and at his age, really no surprise to only get one year from him.

Totally agree= loss of Sanford would be devastatng

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

So what do we think...does this offseason have an impact on how they approach recruiting going forward? No impact? Won't know for sure until we know who the next coach is and what the recruiting philosophy is?

Need more guys like cangelosi and fitzgerald?

"Perfect storm" of sorts with guys like Gilmour, Wood, Sanford not matriculating until 1 year after being drafted (or 2 in Wood's case), and their respective teams not wanting to risk losing them to FA. Not to mention expected early departures like Demko, Santini & McCoshen.

Tuch was a bit of a surprise, as I thought he would've played 1 more season before turning pro.

Updated your post.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

Change the thread title please. Does BC get a trophy for most early departures ever? BC is going to have a very rocky start next season but hopefully all the extra playing time for the new players translates into quicker development of those players which could be setting up BC's most experienced squad ever in two years when they are juniors.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

Wow. Just wow. They may be lucky to go .500 this season. And I have a hard time imagining why Colin White would come back at this point. This offseason has been unfathomably ugly.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

I wonder who will be 1st preseason in Hockey East?

Before Sanford leaving, I gave BC an edge. They may have the top line in Hockey East, but with Sanford leaving, having a productive second line is up in the air. BU lost a ton of offense to graduation from an above average but not elite scoring squad and will need that heralded class to produce. Both BC and BU will be playing with talented but untested freshman goaltenders. I would give a strong edge to BU's D. I don't know as much about UML and NU, but they seem to be bringing back some good talent. Hard to pick at this point. I think those are the top four though with maybe UNH as a surprise. ND and PC have lost too much without corresponding talent coming in IMO.

Flip a coin. Or give it to NU and let them hang another banner ;)

I feel safe in saying this won't be the year of hockey east.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

Finally something I'm glad BC beat UND at: UND only had five early departures (LaDue, Stetcher, Thompson, L Johnson, Schmaltz). ;)

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

Biggest outflow of high-end talent that I can recall since '91 when BU lost underclassmen Amonte, McEachern, Tkachuk, Lachance and Ahola, all of whom played in the NHL, plus graduates Tomlinson, vonStefenelli, Krys and Bradley.

Hearing that Woll earned raves at Toronto development camp.
