Boston College hockey 2021-2022

A pretty good source relayed to me that Kevin Shea, Vice President and Executive Assistant to the President/Chief of Staff, is pushing for Leaman. What I don't know is how much pull he has with Fr. Leahy compared to anyone who is pushing for Greg Brown.

You left out the part where Shea is/was/has been a long-term Hockey East on-ice official, J.D.

Maybe he admires Leaman for not ripping him as much, or at least doing so more courteously?

Interesting development and frankly makes sense why it seems like it's down to Brown vs. Leaman. My gut tells me the hockey alumni committee want Greg Brown to be the coach and Shea wants Leaman. Will be interesting to see how this plays out

I think from experience, Leaman is proven with an NCAA title, while Brown has not had that much as a HC but I am not sure being coach of the national team is good enough for me. I would go with Leaman over Dennehy and Brown and I doubt Brown would want to be an assistant again at BC with Leaman.

If BC wants the possibility of a longtime coach, then it would have to be Brown or Dennehy. Anyone else would probably be gone to the NHL with any degree of success at BC. Brown or Dennehy could be lifetime head coaches at BC even with outstanding success.

I would say the signs are there that Leaman is not long for PC. Whether that's the BC job or an NHL gig. But if he does get the BC job I wouldn't say it's a guarantee that he goes on to the NHL. Right now you can only say the signs point towards him leaving PC.

And losing a coach to the NHL doesn't have to be a bad thing. I am sure BU fans will say it was when Quinn left but you can also look at Denver. Jim Montgomery won a national title and went to NHL. Replaced by David Carle who just won his own national title.

Maybe not, but I'm sure BC is hoping to hire a long term coach and not someone who is going to jump in 3-4 years - ala Quinn.

Looks like Brown flew back to Iowa yesterday almost immediately after meeting with Leahy. My gut says if they were going to hire him, he wouldn’t have flown back on the same day

Maybe he likes to spend time with his family in the offseason? Why stick around here if there wasn't going to be a press conference announcing his hire in the next 24-48 hours?

With all due respect, some of you guys are gripping your sticks too tightly ...

In case you were curious what irrelevant Twitter users want:

This will prove to be the ultimate test of resume vs. family member. With what Leaman did at Union and has done at PC, his resume blows Greg Brown away. There's really no other way to spin that. Yet the source who gave me the Kevin Shea nugget is a BC guy through and through. He wants nothing to do with Leaman. And judging from what I see from BC people they want Greg Brown.

My mindset with this hiring is I think a lot of people have 2 different approaches looking at this hire. 1. Some are looking at it as a, the sky is falling, the system York built was broken, it had deviated too much from what made the program great and BC needs to adapt someone else's system to win. 2. The other way people are looking at it is, the system needs a couple of tweaks and BC will be back to being a perrenial powerhouse

I see people who look at it with the approach of scenario 1 as Leaman advocates and in scenario 2 as Brown advocates.

Now what really gets my gears turning is, I wonder if people would see this hiring process and the candidates in completely different light if the 2019-20 season actually was completed. Let's say that team wins the hockey east and makes a frozen four appearance which isn't a stretch, the team was gross and they were on a tear. Newhook looked like the best freshman I had seen since Gaudreau and was 7th in the country in scoring tied with Julius Mattila. Would a lot of people see where BC is today and where it's going in a completely different perspective? I think they would especially with the recruiting classes they have in the hopper

The system is not broken, what has changed is college hockey writ large. There are few programs that can hang on to their NHL prospects for 4 years. It requires a different approach to recruiting, add in the open portal and a COVID season and everything becomes more complicated. BC did not get the high level transfers this year and the Freshman class was average at best. The Golden Age may be over and other teams in HE have caught up but BC will be at the top every year going forward. This year injuries and the Olympics changed the trajectory.

Leaman is a proven winner with a different approach to recruiting than being at a blue blood. I definitely understand the Greg Brown sentiment but if somebody handed Leahy the two resumes without names on them this wouldn't even be close.
