Boston College Eagles 2019-20 - No Chit!

Re: Boston College Eagles 2019-20 - No Chit!

Facilities: BC looked at building a 4,000 seat rink, but the cost was too high. They also looked at building just a b-ball arena, but again it was way too expensive, 300 million too expensive. The plan now is to build first class practice facilities for hockey and hoops just like football has and baseball is opening in August. This makes very good sense to me. If a new arena for hoops was 150 million, I would build a new arena, but not at 300 million. I do question a new arena costing 300 million, but regardless both new arena ideas are dead.

I think they should build a combo practice facility for hoops and hockey where they can share weight and training rooms. Put it next to the new rec center (Connell). Renovations to Conte and Alumni will come later.

Go Eagles!

i heard the new hockey rink rumor was last year (and it was larger than 4k, believe 5-6k was target). that went cold (i assume financial reasons).

priority #1 is a basketball practice facility (behind conte on beacon side near merkert), but it's going to be expensive (uneven land, have to use union employees, etc.). bc is currently the only p5 basketball program without a basketball practice facility.

Re: Boston College Eagles 2019-20 - No Chit!

We need to put all our facilities on floating platforms on the reservoir. Problem solved.

Unless there is a drought.

The practice facility (Fish Field House) for football has worked out very well. The Frates Center is going to be awesome for baseball and softball. Building a practice facility for basketball and hockey could provide a real boost for both programs. It should be a combo facility where the teams share weight rooms and training rooms. The BCAA should also move into the building. This will free up space in Conte to create amenities for Alumni and Conte. It should be located next to Connell.

Go Eagles!

Re: Boston College Eagles 2019-20 - No Chit!

Didn't see this one so can't comment on the effort. Would have liked to have seen a win to show some resilience after Monday's meltdown. Lineup was not full health with Giles out (he is a bigger deal than we give him credit for) and Helleson also out. I'm happy they didn't get lit up with him out to some degree. How did Mitch Andres look? We need to get this kid ice time and hope the coaches can... like... COACH the kid up?

I think the talent is still reasonably solid at full health and if Hutsko can catch fire they could do some damage but... At this point, one win in their last 5, it's a crash and burn back to earth not seen since Kobe Bryant's last helicopter ride.

Didn't see it either so I go straight to the press conference. York is happy with the effort and obviously they have been right there in this recent rut. Hope it's just that, a rut. Like they had in the 4 game losing streak early in the year. Whether it's just a coincidence right now or not I don't know but the failure in these tight games recently is certainly a concern.

Re: Boston College Eagles 2019-20 - No Chit!

Also, Giles done for the year. That's a tough blow because he really had something with McLaughlin on the 4th line and it forced them to drop Rasanen to 4th line.

Giving up too many goals recently aside from UMass game. Looking for Knight to make an impact in these tight games. He needs to raise his game a little.

Re: Boston College Eagles 2019-20 - No Chit!

The Eagle has landed. The loss of Giles is significant as noted, Rassanen should be on the third line, he was going well for awhile in January but he has cooled off since. I have been saying for three weeks less of Moore and more of Warren. Last night Warren stopped one with his chest when Knight was out of position. I like the Freshman line a lot, lots of creatively and ability. Newhook is the real deal and Boldy has real ability maybe not quite used to playing against a higher level of competition. Needs to make solid plays rather than the highlight reel play. What can you say, UML is a tough team to play, they wait for you to make a mistake and then they pounce. Moore loses a battle behind the net on the PP and boom it is in the net. Knight didn't get his pad down fast enough. Hard to know what to expect from this team at this point, most likely a 3 place finish in HE, they had 1 or 2 games in hand on most everyone. Regroup, refocus and win this close games.

Most likely top 3 or 3rd? Still in first place PPG wise. Tied with Lowell. Good luck to anyone predicting the 1-9 finish though. Gonna be a chaotic ending to the regular season.

BC has a favorable schedule remaining to keep them in the top 3 if not 1st. In some ways dropping in the PWR to 6th keeps them in the East v. Cornell.

They need to sit Moore for the Harvard game. Mitch Anders looked good, he can skate and he has much needed size. Like #2 he needs consistent playing time. Shorten the bench to 5 Dmen in the 3rd.

Matilla, Cotton, Hutsko
Hardman, Newhook, McBain
Boldy, Rasanen, Mc Laughlin
McPhee, Greco, Walker

Go Eagles!

Re: Boston College Eagles 2019-20 - No Chit!

I'm completely baffled by this assessment that Karow is some sort of solution for the D. He's not. Not as bad as others, so sure put him in as your 7th Dman and rotate him in here and there. But... he's not answer. Moore is by far better than any of these guys we are discussing. By a ton. He's streaky but even averaging everything out he's going to grade out higher every time than these other guys. You have to play him and hope he stays hot. He also kills penalties and I don't see anyone else getting in there and replacing that role unless MAYBE Andres has that capability (we don't know).

Andres probably isn't the answer either but we have 120+ games of evidence right here that some guys aren't going to cut it. So absolutely give ice time and try to develop some of these guys if our coaches are interested in coaching the guys they recruited. If that means Karow plays more, fine. But he's our 6th/7th best Dman and even in limited viewing I'm good with Andres getting dressed every night as possibly the 6th and getting regular ice time.

Anyway, it's a Friends and Family invitational tonight at the Garden at 4:30. Probably should try to win it since it's another NC game anyway.

Statistics Lesson. School is in session.

Karow 98GP -5
McInnis 123GP EVEN
Helleson 24GP +9
Warren 25GP +11
Finkelstein 47GP +11
Moore 131GP +23
Mattila 133 GP +9

AVG per game:
Player GP +/- AVG
5 25 +11 0.44
4 24 +9 0.375
6 47 +11 0.234042553
7 131 +23 0.175572519
8 133 +9 0.067669173
3 123 E 0
2 98 -5 -0.051020408

Lesson over.

edit - just for fun, those of you clamoring for SIZE on the back end, we ran off a 6'6" defensemen... and also ran off a guy who was +7 in 12GP.

I don't care too much about the size factor. Torrey Krug is small but he handles himself pretty well. Just one of many examples.

I would take issue with "running off" though. Adam Samuelsson could have stayed and earned his time but did not. Interesting that at that size he still went undrafted. That might tell you something. Who is the other guy you're talking about? Campoli? He's gone on to play at McGill in Canada so I'm not sure the staff mishandled either one of those guys. Chalk it up to poor recruiting though.

As you know... earning playing time may or may not actually be happening at BC anymore. But absolutely, it's all on the coaches.
Playing poor performers? Check.
Lack of development? Check. At least on defense.
Bad recruiting? Hmmm

It's not a new thing sadly and it's coincided with the lack of postseason hardware.

I think it's clear at this point that this is good team, not a great team, like say the 2003 or 2005 teams that made the tournament, won a game, and then were eliminated in the regional finals. That's a significant improvement over the last three years, but not back to the level that we would wish them to be. Depth is a still a problem. We all recognize they are a couple of D-men short. Now with Giles out for the year, there are a couple of forward pulling regular shifts that in an ideal world would be wearing suits and watching the games rather than playing in them.

I think you're over stating it being "all the coaches" vs. being the loss of Cav. He was their ace recruiter and developer, I think that's pretty clear. Marty took some time to step up his recruiting and coaching. I also think Brown wasn't a great recruiter but Cav & Jerry made up for him.

Ayers has done an incredible job with the goalies. Since Buckley has come in the defense has gotten worlds better. Also, their recruiting has gotten much better the past 2 years. The big issue with recruiting was putting their eggs in the huge recruits who ended up leaving after a year or two. Some of that will happen but it decimated the program after the '15-'16 season. They weren't able to restock with guys who could fill the voids and reset the philosophy. This is the first year since that year they've been able to fill the gaps. This year, they crushed recruiting with Knight, Newhook, Boldy, Hardman, Helleson and Warren. For some reason, York de-committed, but that happens. If he came, this class would've been insane.

Next year, with the seasons the recruiting class is putting up, they could have another really strong class. Weight, Powell, Ambrosio, Wilder, and Nesterenko look to be all the real deal. The rest of the class look to be more depth guys with Lovell a PP specialist. The class behind with Hreschuk, Reynolds, Davey & MacDonald looks really strong too. At some point I'll take the time and do a class update for people if they want on stats, where they are in their leagues and what to expect but I think the program is very much so in the right direction.

Also, it's of note, they've fallen pretty far behind in practice/training facilities. The top programs have a dedicated surface and training facility for off ice now. The reason York has been advocating for a new arena is because of this and he's losing recruiting battles as a result.

Re: Boston College Eagles 2019-20 - No Chit!

BC completes an undefeated Beanpot!

Hopefully this games is a confidence boost. 17-8-1, 6th in PWR, in the hunt for RS title. Looking forward to the stretch run. They're retiring Gionta's jersey Saturday. Let's gooooo.

Re: Boston College Eagles 2019-20 - No Chit!

York may have decommitted because Brown left but who knows.

Agree that Ambrosio, Weight and Nesterenko appear to be a very solid trio to build on the current freshman class. Might be some bumps in the road on defense next year but should be able to score goals and I have to believe Knight is back for another year.

Re: Boston College Eagles 2019-20 - No Chit!

With the class they brought in it wouldn't seem like the practice facility is an issue but I am sure it is for certain kids. Would definitely be nice to see a plan for that. I always reference how Jack Parker basically led the campaign for Agganis. Would be a feather in York's cap if he can help move things along at the end of his career.
