OK let's talk about last night. I don't want to talk about Greg Clown, we all know he isn't the right guy for this job and was going to lose this game (as sure of a bet as you'd see outside of a Chauncey Billups poker game).
Overall this game pretty much followed suit of all the other ones against DU; dominated early, probably had 5 grade A chances early, Letourneau had several, and BC had only one goal to show for it. Then ... coaching adjustments. A bad 2nd period. Game over. It still very much is men vs boys as BC got outmuscled yet again, with the ENG being pretty much a microcosm of the game. Probably should have gotten some grit and size in the portal.
Move Conmy to the fourth line. He is basically just here for the PP (a very good weapon on the PP). He has 2 points, both PPGs and he skates on a line with two supremely talented guys in Hagens and Teddy Stiga. This line generally doesn't do much most nights 5 on 5 (Hagens goal vs RPI was just as a PP expired) and is probably the worst first line I've ever seen at BC. To have only two points right now is telling and plenty of a sample size. Hagens should be dominating and he really isn't. Not sure if Jellvik is ever going to come back but when he does, you shuffle the lines around big time. That obviously is a concern IMO as we saw last year there was inability and disinterest by the staff to find viable line combos and their fate was sealed the minute the lineup card was submitted in Manchester after the Northeastern debacle.
Speaking of the PP, BC had less than a minute of PP time last night. Credit to Denver for being smart. The call to negate it was iffy but Gasseau's penalty was terribly stupid at the end of the first period and forced them to kill a penalty to start the 2nd, which was a disastrous period. Gasseau also cocked a guy in the jaw and got away with it. It is what it is... keep doing the same things and you'll keep getting the same results.
Cloutier was terrible, similar to Korec's game vs Quinnipiac, although several goals were snipes. The 2nd goal was terrible and really should never happen on that side of a goalie's five-hole unless he catches the other way. At this point you create competition and give it back to Korec to lose or go straight rotation until we get more results.
Hagens was -4 last night and had a goal so he was on the ice for 5 even strength goals against; one admittedly was undeserved as he worked hard to backcheck, got a stick on a shot he chased down and then had the ricochet go off the kickplate past him and back out front. Being 45% on faceoffs isn't helping.
Faceoffs are still a problem. Two goals directly off faceoff losses in the defensive zone. I believe they were 39% after the first period and 44% after the 2nd. They kept getting better as the game wore on but it didn't matter. They are at 47% for the season. It's the third season in a row this has been problematic. The turnover on a rare faceoff win was in the net within seconds; just terrible and deflating for the entire team and as a defenseman you can't take a puck to that area specifically for that reason.
Defense should be a strength and going back to last year as well, their inability to settle in and play hockey is baffling but eventually they make bad decisions and panic and things degenerate quickly. There is no poise with this group and a lot of it is mental. I don't know if it's personnel or coaching to be honest but either way, these two things don't go together well and we're forced to just watch this play out. It's a bummer. Similar to the goaltending discussion, you have Joyce (and to a lesser degree Hagens) that provides depth and personally I'm a big fan of Joyce, who is +5 over his career in spot duty mostly but he looks good when he's out there. So, create some competition and have some accountability.
Sondreal has been a great. The freshmen show quite a bit of promise. At the end of the day, the coaches and players need to figure it out and show people they can win a big game. We won't know until February.
Not sure who was doing color commentary but it was so much better than having Connelly.
With a trip to play WMU over the Holidays and losses to Quinnipiac and Denver, making the NCAAs is going to be an iffy proposition.
