Book Thread number ?

Re: Book Thread number ?

My oldest brother will go through a standard paperback pulp novel in four or five hours, around 350-400 pages on average. We flew from MSP to PIT last year and he finished an entire book while only reading it during the flights. I'm genuinely amazed at people who can read that fast and then provide detailed analysis or callback after the fact, especially in the detail he can do it.

That's why I got my Kindle originally. Tired of bringing 2-3 books for when I was flying to CO a couple times a year. I'd kill a 300-pager on the way there. Unfortunately, I found that I prefer actual books compared to reading on a device.

That's a lot of crayons too. :)

I read that fast and I am very thankful for the library. It is dam expensive to read that many books

I'll bet you're one of those weirdos who will color faces purple and clouds green.

Not even close. Faces are blue and clouds are orange. Duh.

And les: yes, reading can be expensive. Plus, I am very particular in the books I read. I'm more a movie guy. It has to be a book that really catches me, because I'll just buy it, rather than use the library system.

You bought a Kindle Fire, though, right? That's entirely different than an e-reader that's designated only as a reading platform and not as a tablet.

I did buy a Fire, it was a great value, and honestly didn't think I'd use it for internetting. I was so wrong. And that is a good thing in this case.

I'm not saying its a bad device, only that reading on a non-Fire Kindle is a different experience. The text and page are easier on your eyes, so there's no physical eye strain or fatigue the way you get with a tablet or PC.

It's more the "feel" of having a book in my hands. The fatigue from a device never bothers me. I guess I'm a traditionalist for certain things (see also: phones) ;)

I used to be that way with books too, but the convenience of it when I'm mostly reading on the bus caused me to change. Some of those biographies get to be really large, and bus seats just aren't that wide.

Many times I browse online. 'order' the books I want. They pull them for me, I get an email when they are ready. Library is about 5 min from home. I can go, pick it up and be outta there in less than 5 minutes.

Re: Book Thread number ?

In addition to the obvious, I'm wondering which book I should read next week on vacation. The Buried Giant/Ishiguro, and Barbarian Days/Finnegan are top contenders. Any thoughts?

Oh man I remember doing that when I was a kid at Anoka County Libraries. It was awesome!

No such tools existed when I was a kid. If you wanted a book, you either had to find it in the stacks or know how to get one of the librarians to pay attention to you enough to help you find it.

At least twice a week I stop by our local library to pick up books, dvds, cds or books on tape we have ordered online from the state-wide system.

Re: Book Thread number ?

We had two major evolutions when I was growing up. The digital card system (which could be a PITA to use since it was DOS-based) and the internet reservation/checkout system.

And, like online banking, it has led to some interesting things. In our house, much of what we order we could access completely online. But I go to the library to some pick things up I could access directly online and stop by the bank now and then to conduct business I could do on my iphone just to have contact with the tellers and occasionally with other customers. I live in a small town, so I can do this without a lot of extra time, and it is one small way I can keep from isolating myself from others in my community. I love what online shopping and business transactions have done to save me time and money, but it's too easy to isolate ourselves from others outside of our regular employment situation.
