Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

In an effort to help my buddy see Endgame (he has 2 jobs and now two kids so time doesnt work for him anymore) I decided I will take him during the day later this week. (I only have to pay for 1 ticket so eh whatever) Problem is that means I need to watch some films to catch up. I decided I will watch Civil War, Infinity War and Captain Marvel before Friday. (seen Black Panther already so no need to go there)

I read the Civil War comic when it came out (worked in a comic shop so I read every event since it helped with sales and well I wasnt paying for it) and hated it. It had such promise but they chickened out on the concept 1/3 of the way through and the ending was awful. The fallout was a mess (they had to have Spidey remask by making a deal with Mephisto that wiped out his marriage and killed Captain America by...getting shot) and I stopped reading fast. I figured the movie would be better since the reasoning was different (and intriguing) and well, people seem to think it was great. I was underwhelmed. I wont get into a long review of it or anything because I know no one will agree with me and I dont want to seem like I am crapping on a film plenty of people around here like but I think they did a disservice to a lot of characters including Spider-Man, Iron Man and Captain America. The action scenes are fun, but the story itself I just couldnt get into. I think my being familiar with comics especially Civil War itself, hurt me in this regard. If all I had was experience with the films I probably like it more as while I still notice the issues I ignore them easier cause of what is going on around it. B- is what I gave it.

Right now I am starting Infinity War and I have high hopes for this one.

note: I have my biases but I am truly hoping to enjoy all of these films or I wouldnt be watching them. I am glad that they are successful and the vast majority love them. I mean no disrespect if I say anything that seems harsh or overtly critical so if I accidentally say anything offensive or you disagree with it is not meant as such.

I guess Endgame brought in 1.2 BILLION this weekend. That's friggin' crazy.

$350 domestically, shattering the record Infinity War set last year by almost 30%. The $239 makes it a top 10 all-time box office hit in China...after only five days.

Now we'll see how frontloaded it is. It needs only a 2.68 multiplier to overtake The Force Awakens domestic record and only slightly higher to make $1 billion. However, the multiplier for Infinity War was only 2.64. It made 38% of its box office on opening weekend. A 2.86 multiplier gets it to $1 billion.

ETA: Math correction.

The only MCU films I have seen entirely are Spider-Man, Infinity War, Ant Man & the Wasp and Captain Marvel. I have seen parts of almost every MCU film on cable but never the whole thing. I feel like I've seen all 22 though because I've watched Cram It on Screen Junkies and recaps on Collider, WhatCulture and others. Even without being immersed in the MCU I found Endgame thoroughly enjoyable. It holds up on its own pretty well, but obviously you get more from the experience if you've seen them all.

Chinatown.

Good acting, good directing, how it won for screenplay I have no idea and I felt no satisfaction when the film was over. I can check this one off my list now.

You're not supposed to feel satisfaction. It's one of the most downer endings in the history of cinema.

"The Avengers?"
"Earth's Mightiest Heroes"
"You mean like Kevin Bacon?"

"I bid you farewell and good luck morons!"

IW already >>>>> Civil War :)

I kinda quit after Iron Man 3 though I saw Winter Soldier (yawn) Guardians 1 (which I loved til the end...ugh the Dance Off) and Black Panther. (liked didnt love) Also saw Spiderman: Homecoming because my buddy loves Spidey. (he sadly didnt love that film though I dug it outside the Iron Man parts)

I dunno maybe it is Captain America. He is by far my favorite character in the Marvel Universe (one of the few Marvel comics I read regularly including Winter Soldier when it came out) and I just dont think the MCU treats him well.

I am loving IW right now so I assume Endgame will be more than satisfying for me :)

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

Saw Us last night.

I liked it. The opening credits scene after what I suppose you would call the "cold open" was very Kubrick-esque. My only gripe would be the ending twist ends up opening some possible plot holes and brings more questions asked than answered, but still a good film overall.

I like that Peele doesn't resort to jump scares. The trailer alone for Curse of La Llorona that played before had five or six.

I did not envy the staff working the theater. After three straight days of Avengers fever it looked like a war zone. It's usually a very clean theater, but last night it was just sticky floors, popcorn spilled all over the place, and the guy handing out the 3d glasses for Endgame looked like he could go a month without seeing another person.

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

The Curse of La Llorona is somehow tied into The Conjuring universe (The Conjurverse?) which was totally not needed but explains so much. That series has gone from legitimately scary horror to laughably predictable jump scares. The Nun was supposed to be a return to form but it was little more than a bunch of really bad jump scares connected by a tenuous plot. If jump scares are done well and used sparingly that's one thing, but far too many films rely on jump scare after jump scare. The Nun was the worst offender. You'd see a character standing alone in a dark hall and the camera would slowly pan to the right...what do you suppose you'll see when the camera pans back? Lazy storytelling. I was looking forward to La Llorona but then saw reviews that mentioned the Conjuring connection and the reliance on jump scares and knew what I'd be in for at the theater.

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

That's sad. The legend of La Llorona would, I think, be genuinely terrifying, especially to parents, if just made into a good movie. Hardly seems like special effects would even be needed to make that legend into a frightening movie.

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

Well the problem is the guys behind the better films (from what I have been told...havent seen them) moved on. James Wan made Aquaman and David Sandberg made Shazam. I know Wan is still producer but it seems he is done with making horror flicks for the time being which sucks for the fans of that franchise. (though they still make money for WB/New Line)

Finished Infinity War...much better than Civil War though I do have some gripes that arent really of importance here. They maybe leaned on the jokes a little too much they definitely treated the characters better than Civil War did. I still dont like Evans as Cap...but I think that is more of how he is written than how Evans is playing him. Spidey was spot on in the film and even Doctor Strange, a character I never much liked was good. Hell even Thor was good for once. A-/B+.

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

By the by, Marvel has the #2 movie in America as well. Captain Marvel jumped back up to $8.05 million to come in just ahead of La Llorona's $7.5. Captain Marvel has a cumulative $413 million domestic and is over $1.11 billion globally.

Adjusted for inflation, Endgame is already #203 all-time. Unadjusted it sits at #50. After just three days of release.

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

I just talked to the assistant manager here at Smittys and they sold out all 32 shows of Endgame this weekend. When employees arrived Saturday morning there was already a line around the corner. They are expecting 12 more packed theaters on Tuesday when tickets are only $5.

The matinee show I saw it at was 1/3 empty.

I forgot how much I liked IW (we watched it again Friday night). I've seen all the lead up movies - for me, I would only rewatch Iron Man, the Captain America series, Thor: Ragnarock, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Spidey). IW was fun, but tough to rewatch with the ending and I'm not a huge fan of the Vision/Scarlet Witch story.

eta: captain marvel

And here I just re-watched Chris Hemsworth.....in "The Cabin In The Woods" and laughed my arse off at how he's Thor. :D (good movie btw).

I was planning on watching IW again before I saw Endgame.

Still have to see Captain Marvel though

I liked civil war. It was much better than a lot of the dreck that came in between it and Iron Man and the first avengers.
