Black Friday 2010: Kick, Scream, and Punch Your Way To $avings!

Re: Black Friday 2010: Kick, Scream, and Punch Your Way To $avings!

Is it me or is the xmas music they play in the stores getting worse every year? I swear I heard a Billy Squire xmas song in Menards today.

Public music will continue to sound worse and worse as you get older and your tastes improve. All mass expression, from public art to political speeches, is targeted to 12 year olds and adults who stopped developing mentally when they were 12 years old.

I have seen PS3 deals at Amazon. but not much else. They are really trying to move the Wii this year. The best deal I've seen is 3 games, 2 controllers and the console for $170.

My insurance check will come on Saturday, so that precludes me from the Friday sales...not sure if that's good or bad. :p

Was it "The Stroke"? I always think of "The Stroke" when I think of Menards.

My wife mentioned last night that Walmart will open at midnight, however, you can't checkout until 5am. Not sure if that's just the local store or not. But holy hell what would you do for 5 hours in Walmart????????

Not true. All registers will be staffed at midnight. At 12:01, the midnight sale items will be unwrapped and people will be able to check out. At 5:00, the 5:00 sale items will be unwrapped.

Walmart was nice enough to tell us that we needed all of our registers staffed for midnight Friday four days ago. Our schedule for BF has been finalized for three weeks. That was a fun thing to work out.

And here's an insider tip: even though it says "on sale 5am-11am", it's really "while supplies last". I think the two times for various sale items was a bit smarter in the crowd control department -- that way, if you're not there for the "big ticket" items, you can get what you want and get out quicker. I'll be there midnight until two in the afternoon, so I hope it doesn't get too chaotic (especially since they won't let us carry tasers!). I ask for any of you partaking in sales ANYWHERE, please have consideration for the employees. We're doing the best we can :)

This. Good luck bando, Race Boarder, etc...:D

I start at 8 and work until who knows when. I can't wait for all the arguments I'm going to be in on Friday. Yay.

How do they get around the labor laws? When I worked at LL Bean it was a fire-able offense to be on the clock more than 12 hours in a day because they could face a fine...

That can't be right... I've put in 20-hour days at my current job only to show up the next morning at 8am.

Probably varies by state. I can be on the clock all day as long as I punch out for a half hour break every 6 hours...

Wow... That's some interesting legalities there... I mean, the average gameday for when I worked for the Tennessee Smokies was 9am till about 11:30pm... Those hours are pretty typical for anyone who works with a Minor League Baseball team... The day of our Trace Adkins Concert, I worked from 9am-2:30am with some of the front office staying till ~ 3:30am...

Also at Dick's, we have one employee who simply whores himself out to the company... He has unloaded our freight from 6am-noon, then stayed and covered the sales floor after that till closing, around 10pm... This has happened several times... This guy also brags about how he accumulated ~80 hours in the week that the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup...

I guess Tennessee and Illinois don't give a sh*t about workers rights :cool::p

I volunteered (was supposed to be there 430-200). This is the only week of the year that Walmart allows overtime so I was all over that when the opportunity presented itself, haha.

This.

On Friday Amazon will have limited quantities of the Kindle 2 (i.e. the previous version) on sale for $89. Obviously a somewhat outdated product, but still noteworthy since (from what I've seen) Kindle prices are rarely reduced.

Regarding the labor issues being discussed below: In addition to varying state-by-state, the laws must vary depending on whether you're hourly or salaried, no?
