BIG / WCHA Challenge - 2015 Great Lakes Invitational

Re: BIG / WCHA Challenge - 2015 Great Lakes Invitational

They are not going to invite eastern teams for the foreseeable future. They don't bring many fans and the focus is getting attendance up. Michigan based teams bring many more fans in.
WMU has connections with olympia entertainment.

That's true- Providence and RPI didn't bring many fans. We've seen BU/BC and they bring an ok number of fans and it is usually good games. UND brings some fans. Minnesota is tied to their own tourney (usually after Xmas.) Ferris would be a good invite, as would a Miami, Oh. IMO.

Re: BIG / WCHA Challenge - 2015 Great Lakes Invitational

Next few invites are set
2016 Western (why another invite)
2017 Bowling Green (like)
2018 Lake State (like)

Other invites would like to see in the following years:
Providence, Union, Minnesota Duluth, RPI.....
BU, BC, North Dakota, Minnesota if you could get them....

Where did you get LSSU from? Haven't seen that mentioned anywhere.

I was wondering if LSSU would get an invite. Would be bad if they were the only Michigan team not invited. Would love to see UMD play their as well, that would be a dream of mine. You won't see Minnesota because they host their Mariucci Classic. Also it makes me chuckle that BGSU is the second closest D1 college hockey team to the Joe. I'm sure that's not news for BGSU or people in SE Michigan but it is for me

Wastern will cry like the red-headed step-child they are if not invited...

I don't think LSSU is in stone yet, but I'm pretty sure they have discussed it. I think most teams have next years' schedule done and the year after almost done.

They are going to continue with teams from Michigan and other nearby schools. It doesn't make much sense to fly BC in when they can bus Ferris in and Ferris will put more butts in the seats.

It's only because they want to rub elbows with the greatness that is Michigan. When I was in Ann Arbor on Saturday & Sunday, it felt like I'd died & gone to heaven. I even asked my cab driver to stop as we went by Yost so I could kneel at the altar of college hockey.

That's the spirit. Glad some people have finally stopped trying to look the other and stopped trying to not acknowledge it.

Why were you in Ann Arbor Saturday & Sunday? There were no hockey games. Were you trying to stalk the players?

Re: BIG / WCHA Challenge - 2015 Great Lakes Invitational

Michigan-BGSU will be the first college hockey game in the new Detroit arena.

Unless they're playing a different game before the GLI, this won't be the first game. The host school will get that honor, so the first game will be Michigan Tech-MSU.

THey care co-hosts and the first day schedule has rotated since the middle of Jamie Russell's tenure so unless you know something, he might be right...

The Huskies have played the last 3 early games in the semifinals, and as long as Mel is around I would expect that to continue. And the other school is a 'host" in name only, they provide none of the support or personnel for the tournament.

Mel might be in Ann Arbor by then so who knows.

It may have been that our team had ice time at the Cube Saturday & Sunday. I was also way overdue for a Blimpy Burger.

Any idea what kind of buyout Mel has in his contract?

$300k or so, decreases every year but his deferred compensation increases every year by same amount and is only paid out if he reaches the end of his contract.

As I'm sure you noticed, it isn't the same in the new spot. I won't even go anymore. it's just too depressing...

No, Michigan play the late game for attendence reasons. Also, roughly half of all tickets sold to the event are from Michigan fans so there's that.
