BIG / WCHA Challenge - 2015 Great Lakes Invitational

Re: BIG / WCHA Challenge - 2015 Great Lakes Invitational

No, Michigan play the late game for attendence reasons. Also, roughly half of all tickets sold to the event are from Michigan fans so there's that.

Then they sure didn't show up. Tech fans were the dominant bunch in the stands.

Perspective is skewed based on where you were sitting. During the early game Tuesday when I was in section 203 I would have agreed with you. During Michigan games when I was on the opposite end of the arena, unable to see many of the Tech fans through the scoreboard, it looked like mostly UM fans.

The only thing Mel will be in Ann Arbor for is to coach the Huskies at Yost.

If he's offered the job, he'll take it IMO. Michigan is a top 5 job in college hockey. As a Tech fan/alum, I'd love to see him stay in Houghton, but I don't see that happening if they ever approach him.

Why would a Michigan fan arrive to watch the game that does not include Michigan. Most Michigan fans live within an hour drive of JLA, unlike Tech fans who live 8 hours away. Of course Tech fans will get there early and stay late, they drove 8-hours to watch their team play hockey. Might as well watch both games. Michigan fans typically don't have to dedicate their entire weekend to such an event, just two and a half hours plus drive time.

That's why Tech agreed (or maybe even asked, I don't know) to have Michigan co-host. Money, plain ans simple. It's not a bad thing, it's actually smart.

The $300,000 buyout this year is a factor as to whether he'd be offered. I also see UM looking for a younger coach. I'd make Brian Wiseman & Billy Muckalt favorites provided Bilky does well in the USHL.

I'm pretty sure the vast majority of Tech fans that attend live or grew up within a few hours of Detroit. The reason it works for MTU, is because there are so many alumni in the area...I've attended a few times but not alot because I have no family there and don't live there. You are sadly mistaken as to why Michigan Tech has the GLI. Also, why the hell wouldn't Michigan fans show up early if they can and watch another good game they already paid for, especially when it involves deciding who they'll play day 2, or could possibly involve a rival like Michigan State?

Billy would be a great choice, but he'd probably have one eye on finding a way to the NHL the whole time...thats why he left MTU. He wants to get to the NHL.

I have to agree, but man, if Mel does turn down Michigan to stay in Houghton, Tech fans will love him forever.

You pretty much nailed that. Good you didn't mention that JJM was just doing Red a favor.

Because there is more to do down here than watch college hockey....

So why did Tech ask Michigan to co-host it? Why is sparty a usual third invite? Money. sparty brings fans, so does Michigan, Also, the underlying goal of getting college hockey to increase in popularity. What better way than to have th two largest and most popular universities in the state as regular participants? Money, it all comes down to money.
