Big 10 a scapegoat?

Re: Big 10 a scapegoat?

Maybe closer, but are they rivals? no MTUvs mankato, st cloud and Bemdji will never be rivals. MTU vs NMU, LSSU and FSU would be rivals but tech will stay in the WCHA.

Yes, they are rivals. MTU has played Mankato every year but one since '96-'97; SCSU? Tech has played them every year since '89-'90, and even played them back in 1948. BSU has even been on the schedule 6 times since the 2005-'06 season, and will continue to be now that they are in conference.

I'll give you NMU with proximity (but it's also more about the fact NMU and Tech have played every year since '79-'80), but LSSU? Only because of the Superior Showcase have they met the last 4 years. Before that they hadn't met since the '99-'00 season. And Ferris? Really? Tech hasn't faced FSU since '95-'96. You think just because Tech plays those schools in volleyball and basketball the hockey team's gonna have a rivalry? Why? There are a good percentage of hockey fans who don't give two rips about the other (D-II) sports at Tech. I guarantee it.

Re: Big 10 a scapegoat?

An interesting side note that I haven't seen anyone mention yet. The University of Minnesota has a policy in which they will not schedule or play a non-conference regular season game against a school with a Native American nickname. Because the Gophers have always been in the same conference as the sue, this policy didn't apply to und. My question is, once Minnesota joins the BTHC, will they have the stones to adhere to this policy and refuse to play und in a non-conference series? It will be interesting to see what happens.

I mentioned this on GopherPuckLive, and said that someone mentioned to me that they thought a "traditional rivalries" clause might be in there, too. UND would most certainly fall under this clause, IF it does indeed exist.

I hope they are scheduling the Mankatos, Bemdjis and St Clouds. They are in the same league. Yes MTU is playing these teams in front of very small crowds. In reality, you cant give tickets away when these other teams come to town only if it is a Winter Carnival.

It would be better crowds and rivals by playing teams from Soo, Marquette, and Big Rapids. Heck they play these teams in youth levels. All these towns are close to Lake Superior and are very remote towns in northern michigan with small univeristies with D1 hockey programs. And some of these programs are even struggling to get wins, lately.

Re: Big 10 a scapegoat?

As of right now, my only concern for the future is the CCHA schools. If they can stay solvent, then there is a chance that the BTHC will lead to more spots for more schools to go varsity. If they can't, then the dominoes really start to fall.

Here are the schools left in the CCHA for the 2012-2013 season

Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio; WMU; FSU; LSSU; NMU; Bowling Green and UAF

Can Notre Dame and Miami Ohio support the rest of the league?

Not sure...but quite here have quite a bit of respect for Miami. Pretty much the only reason its mentioned in the same breath with Notre Dame is that its been playing good hockey recently. Its hard to say whether that recruiting streak will stay with the future of the CCHA and if Notre Dame does decide to jump to HE for any reason...Miamis foundation will be severely tested.

Really? Miami has a better history of success than Notre Dame. Look it up:

Miami - 6 straight NCAA appearances; 9 overall since 1994; 2 Frozen Fours
Notre Dame - 5 NCAA appearances overall since 2004; 2 Frozen Fours; dropped varsity to club ~ 25 years ago

Much easier to call the Irish a flash in the pan than the Redhawks, although with new rinks, both have a good chance of sustaining...

Big Rapids isnt all that close to Lake Superior. You do know its closer to Grand Rapids than Lake Superior?

I mentioned this on GopherPuckLive, and said that someone mentioned to me that they thought a "traditional rivalries" clause might be in there, too. UND would most certainly fall under this clause, IF it does indeed exist.

I don't think that policy exists, or if it does, it's ignored anytime $ gets waved in front of the university. They've been matched up three times with Florida State in the Big Ten-ACC challenge. They'll ignore it if it means playing North Dakota in hockey, too.

The B1G Mistake-ACC Challenge would fall under the "conference obligations" clause, which does exist. The CE clause is why MN has continued playing the Sioux in hockey.

Wisconsin who has a policy against playing teams out of conference with Native American nicknames has a "traditional rivalries" clause. It was put into place for the Badgers to continue to play Marquette in basketball when they were still the Warriors but would obiously apply to North Dakota.

Hell, the UW mens basketball team played UND in basketball this year and they certainly aren't a rival in that sport.

Re: Big 10 a scapegoat?

Close enough to play Marquette, Soo and Houghton.

What part of "Duluth, Bemidji, St. Cloud and Mankato are closer to Houghton than Big Rapids" and "Tech has a long tradition of playing all the WCHA schools and no one cares about Ferris State hockey" do you not understand?

I never mentioned Duluth. More empty seats when Bemidji, St Cloud, and Mankato when they play each other. Get people in the seats when they have teams from Soo, Marquette and Big Rapids compared to the other minnesota teams.

It has more to do with the product on the ice as of late, even Carnival wasn't as populated.

This. Seriously, you're comparing attendance from 1995 (the last time FSU visited Houghton and which, incidentally is the last year Tech was .500) to attendance last year vs. Mankato (who finished 11th), BSU (who finished 10th) and SCSU (who finished 9th)? And you're telling me that attendance in games between the last four ranked teams in the WCHA stunk? STOP THE PRESSES! You also just brought up 3 of the lowest attendance teams in the conference, and SCSU is kidding themselvs with the nearly 6000 they report as in the building - I was there last year and MAYBE half that were actually there...

Tech's had a winning season since 1995.

But other than that, this person is making no sense.
