best pep band ever - anywhere

Re: best pep band ever - anywhere

My vote is the Michigan Tech band. When they came to the WCHA playoffs in St. Paul they owned that building! They supported any team who did not have a band traveling with them by playing as if they were their home band. This was a few years ago but there was an energy that they created which was fantastic and probably impossible to ever replicate. Loved the energy, the support of other teams without a band and those great gold and black stripped overalls.
The Michigan Tech Pep Band is the Deathkloc of college hockey pep bands.

This is where my vote is as well... I don't know how many of those nerds I've high-fived over the years at the FF. Their energy is pretty cool.

If you mean Anywhere, it's probably over in Europe, as a college futbol pep band. But otherwise it is a close call between RPI and Michigan Tech. Tech would probably win on style points for entrance and style.
As far as the ECAC is concerned, I have seen ever band at home, except for St. L and RPI is by far the best band.

SLU doesn't have a pep band. Technically, Union doesn't either, except for this quintet they try to throw together when they play us.

Re: best pep band ever - anywhere

I'm going to have to remove MTU's pep band from this dicussion as the the thread as the original poster was asking about college bands... As the urban legend goes with other topics, "Sorry MTU you were not included in our ranking of the best college pep bands, because our rankings don't includes pro level units..."

And Wisconsin? Really? Sorry, they are not even close to the top. Other than the fact they sit behind a fairly large student section, nothing special there Everything is 100% canned and 0% improv. And a sweater for a uniform - yeah that just screams wild and crazy to me. :( I would have even put Mankato ahead of you, but they are miked and fed through the PA system so that is an automatic DQ.

In Hockey East the most musically talented might be UVM. They certainly lack a bit of in your face nastiness about them though.

Re: best pep band ever - anywhere

As far as I know, only one men's division one hockey program has a pep band that was described as "America's Pep Band" by the national media....

Sports Illustrated ran a short article on the band and called them "America's Pep Band"

30 Years ago that was true.
20 Years ago also.
10 years ago maybe.
Currently - they are good, but, not great/don't control the atmosphere like they once did. The student section in general at hockey games has declined dramatically - some classic chants are gone, originality has decreased tremendously, and a lot of football chants have made their way into the rink. The student section somewhat takes their lead from the band, & the band has really dialed it back over the last ten years - seems to be much more conservative. I'm not sure if that's at Barry's direction, or Leckrone is just getting old/mellow in his old age. I just know that Badger hockey games do not have the party atmosphere they used to, and the band has to take some of that responsibility.
I really wish I could argue against this, but I can't.

For the record, I blame whatever AV Club *******s have been put in charge of the Kohl Center. Leckrone can't do his thing if he's constantly being overruled by the ****ed PA system.

I've always viewed us as the Hemi 'Cuda of pep bands. Big beefy American V8 bolted to two couches, noisy, a little crude but a hoot to drive, boatloads of power, godspeed keeping 'er on the road.

Duluth's band is criminally underrated. If they get an animal on drums they can FLY. They do Reel Big Fish better than we do. If only they weren't stuck on the glass.

Re: best pep band ever - anywhere

I really only have Hockey East experience, so take this with a grain of salt:

UVM's was definitely a standard deviation above the mean--music wise, probably my favorite.
I've always liked Maine's pep band.
BC's was meh.
Providence's sucks. (I feel really bad saying this as I have several friends in the band...but I swear to God if they play Bad Romance one more time I'm going to lose it. Also, my junior year against then-#1 ranked/undefeated Merrimack the keyboarder [I hate that we have a keyboard player] started randomly playing Rihanna's "We Found Love" DURING OVERTIME. Like WHILE PLAY WAS GOING. Un-freaking-believable.)

Re: best pep band ever - anywhere

Anyone but St. Cloud or Minnesota State.

Like the MTU band. Duluth is usually good, used to be REALLY good.

Re: best pep band ever - anywhere

#1: MTU - an organic, irreverent, energetic group
#2: Wisconsin - musically excellent, energetic, big band - synergy with fan section really makes them

Lots of bands tied for #3.
Hard to judge after that.

Re: best pep band ever - anywhere

In sheer terms of getting under the opponents teams skin, there is no one better than the Clarkson pep band.

Only if the band they sent to Rochester last season wasn't representative of their normal performance.

... *cough*

Consider this, about RIT:

No music majors. No marching band. No football games.

Yet the RIT pep band is so good that opposing teams actively prohibit them from coming to play.

I believe NMU banned the Tech band from coming with instruments for a few years as well.

I think you're onto something here. One of the unique things in college sports is the bands but they've been getting marginalized ever since the marketeers came on the scene and started pushing the idea of the "game experience" which, to me, is mostly noise pollution. It's especially noticeable in the regionals and FF where the bands seem to have been banished to the rafters, limited in numbers, and left to compete with the house organist and sound booth.

Let college sports be college sports.
