Best Instrumentalists?

Twitch Boy

Defacing this tagline is a MAX foul
Time to start some arguments.

Drums, guitar, vocals, bass. Let's see 'em.

Drums: Bonham, honorable mention Peart and Moon. (Weird thing is Eminence Front just does it for me, and that wasn't even Moon.)

Guitar: Prince, honorable mention Clapton, Hendrix, Knopfler, and Rhoads.

Vocals: Mercury. Discussion over.

Bass: Dunno, JPJ, Entwistle, Burton, and Lemmy all good candidates.

Re: Best Instrumentalists?

Adding to your list:

Drummer - Steward Copeland or Ringo. If anyone disses Ringo I have a plethora of sh#t coming your way to prove you wrong
Bass - Mike Rutherford or Stanley Clarke
Guitar - SRV, maybe Yngwie Malmsteen
Vocals - Elvis

Re: Best Instrumentalists?

Drums: Stewart Copeland, Neil Peart, Matt Cameron, Jimmy Chamberlain, Stephen Perkins, William Calhoun, Ringo Starr, Charlie Watts

Bass: Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, Eric Avery, Muzz Skillings, Ben Shepherd, Keith Brammer

Guitar: Jimi Hendrix, Andy Summers, Alex Lifeson, Paul Simon, Gary Miller ( Dr. Know), Tom Morello, St. Vincent, Jon Congleton, Brian Egeness

Re: Best Instrumentalists?

Drums are pretty covered for me with the selections already given.

Bass: Again, pretty well covered. I'll add Flea and Claypool because I love me some goofy funk every now and then.

Guitar: Prince was a beast. I like the ones mentioned more than EVH, but that dude knows his stuff.

Vocals: Mercury and Elvis are tough to beat. I'll add two other favorites of mine, though. Mike Reno from Loverboy. I've always thought of it as THE voice from that era. Crisp, clear, clean. Didn't snarl often, but when he did it was just right. Dave Grohl. Guy just has the perfect yell in my opinion. Not wimpy, not over the top.

This is hard. I'm blaming on a lot of names. I'll be in and out of this thread a lot.

Re: Best Instrumentalists?

Guitar, Duane Allman, Derek Trucks , Warren Haynes, Dicky Betts, Larry Carlton, Skunk Baxter, Jon Herrington, Wayne Kravitz, Rick Derringer, Mark Knopfler. Joe Bonamassa.

Drums, Keith Carlock, Bernard "pretty" Purdie,Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd

Re: Best Instrumentalists?

Drums: Manu Katche

Bass: Tony Levin

Vocals: Maria McKee

Guitar: Richard Lloyd

Re: Best Instrumentalists?

No Tom Morello mention yet? Or Victor Wooten?

Edit: I see solvs got Tom. Missed that.

Re: Best Instrumentalists?

Actually surprised Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston haven't been mentioned.

I ignored pop while choosing. Hell Aretha or Stevie Wonder are up there and a plethora of lesser knowns.

Without digging up names the lead singers of Portishead, Over the Rhine and Cowboy Junkies make my heart sing.

I figured Aretha didn't even need to be mentioned. Talk about a slam dunk. :)

Re: Best Instrumentalists?

Guitarists not mentioned yet: Kirk Hammett, Joe Satriani (the most tuneful/least boring of the virtuoso players, IMO), Dave Mustaine, Slash, Kim Thayil, Peter Buck, Chris DeGarmo and Michael "The Whip" Wilton. I'll also throw Mark Tremonti out there, outside of Creed he's been impressively good as both a guitar player and a singer.

Re: Best Instrumentalists?

For guitarists, it's not only about having ability to wank your frets. I also judge them based on their ability to create a signature sound/vibe.
