Beanpot LXXIII: "Please, sir, I want some more"

I did not realize that a shoot out has already decided a championship. A change is needed but I doubt that it will happen. still have not gotten over the OT loss to Harvard in the first round. That one left a mark. I can see a shoot out in the consolation game but not the first round or the championship. Not defensible from either the fan or player point of view.

Well it looks very possible and hope we can avoid this next Monday being these two teams are close in talent and level of play. Winning a Beanpot on a shootout is unthinkable for either team.
[Not really a sandbag]No worries, this game should be decided by the second period. You did see the results from this past Friday, no?[/Not really a sandbag]

The NCAA made the change several years ago to only allow full sudden death overtimes in the post season. All regular season games must use the 3 on 3 5-minute OT and a shootout would be used to determine an in season tournament placement but the game remains a tie. I remember when this was announced that this Beanpot scenario would come up and even more so it would happen in the championship game.

I always thought one of the great things about college hockey was its nuances and variety. Of course in its infinite wisdom the NCAA took that away. Who gives a **** if the beanpot overtime format slightly changes pairwise/NPI? It’s maddening to change a longtime Boston tradition for such a flimsy reason.

Just not a good way to decide a winner in a tie game, not sure who is in charge of these things but the coaches should push hard for a change.
IIRC, the 3x3 OT and shootout was forced by the western schools in the name of "uniformity" in calculating the Pairwise but really because of #BeanpotEnvy. There have been attempts to exempt the Beanpot but none of those efforts have gotten anywhere because of (primarily) western opposition.

Seriously they can flood the plains out west with their western tears for all I care. If they had a tournament worth even talking about, would anyone out here care? Absolutely not.

I actually had a draft prior to these game written on this thread reminding folks of the possibility of this shootout nonsense.

I cannot wish enough bad things to happen to the folks that have allowed this to happen. Can someone right a letter to Charlie Baker about this? Surely he should understand this.

I still say that if this cannot get resolved, the Beanpot committee allows this tournament to go rogue and you play a non-NCAA sanctioned tournament (exhibition with no NPI ramifications) with non-NCAA refs and whatever else is necessary to play this game as it was intended and done for decades and decades.
This!!!

Not at all help yourself ) I don’t smoke actually and try to stay healthy and have a good healthy diet and activities to stay of sound mind and body

That said we all know anything can happen despite the records of the two teams

BU outshot BC last Friday for a good deal of the game and BC was just optimistic with their few chances and good defense and received good goaltending from LC

Same could happen again this year in the beanpot 🫘when BU beat BC again in the beanpot last year

Nothing is a given and strange things happen sometimes but BU seems to get the majority of the breaks in this tournament and their record wins in the tournament is proof itself

BC will not catch up in my lifetime and I have watched BC hockey for years and I am in my retirement years and just turned 70 last year

So feel free to smoke 💨 whatever you desire ericredax

Listen both schools usually recruit the cream of the crop compared to other HE schools

Both have the same amount of NCAAs

But BU has 31 and BC only 20 by the last count

Records mean nothing

Knowing that the Beanpot is not a HEA event I emailed them anyway figuring they would respond and NESN and ESPN would not. I was correct, HEA responded in minutes. They don't know the media rights details but did say that the Beanpot is meant to be blacked out on ESPN+ in New England and only viewable on NESN or NHL Network. They added that one year it was mistakenly not blacked out on ESPN+, which has led to confusion. I asked HEA if they could provide a NESN and Garden contact to find out what going on for sure.
