Beanpot LXVI: The Tong Wars Resume

Re: Beanpot LXVI: The Tong Wars Resume

Having seen all four teams, Northeastern is the tournament favorite.
When has that EVER happened?
Even their four wins in the 1980s, they would not have been "favorites."
The college hockey world is upside-down.

They're bound to win, it took Harvard awhile to get theirs last year after their Beanpot drought.

Before that BC was a Beanpot a decade when BU started to dominate in the 80s and 90s and 2000s.

If NU wins, it will be their first since the 80s and I don't think any of us would be surprised.

Based on their records, on paper at least, HU and NU should be in the finals this year on Feb. 12th.

Re: Beanpot LXVI: The Tong Wars Resume

I just can't wait to hear about how many sections Northeastern filled and what a great rendition of Stacy's Mom it was

Re: Beanpot LXVI: The Tong Wars Resume

Fair enough. All I am saying is that when BC takes the ice, Nathan gerbe, Brian gionta, etc - won’t be walking through that door.

I miss watching those Eagles....

So do I. And lots of other BC fans do as well.

Harvard losing Donato can't be understated. I don't think he's the best player in college hockey, but if there was an MVP award, he should probably win it.

Except we'll have him for the first round. I don't think it will matter though as we have underperformed all year. Last weekend we almost lost to the worst team in the conference in a game we should have dominated. I don't hold out much hope for getting to the finals. Huskies all the way.

Re: Beanpot LXVI: The Tong Wars Resume

Thought this thread was titled The Thong Wars for a minute...

Anywho, I say NU wins it as it means more to them than any other team. Used to be when Parker's corpse was coaching BU would at least show up for this game. Now under Quinn I doubt they even do that.

..bu is undefeated in their last 4. unless they totally lay dead in the Arizona sun...:) .. watch out, they getting warmed up at the right time of the year.

Re: Beanpot LXVI: The Tong Wars Resume

For the most part for decades, it has been bu or BC with BU the dominant team overall. Harvard and NU were not relevant until the Crimson broke the ice last year. NU is due this year but this year I would say all 4 teams are relatively equal and any team can win it this year.

I got to experience NU's last one, as a freshman in 1988. Bruce Racine was a stud. I think BU got two goals past him in the championship, and both were on deflections - it seemed that was the only way he could be beat. All 4 of the hounds titles came in the '80s. BU has the ridiculous string of making the championship game in something like 25 out of 27 years, and won 6 straight in the late 90s/early 2000's. Then BC too over the dominance.

I was also at that game and BU scored 3 on Bruce, but gave up 6. And although NU has just 4 titles, they have done something Harvard has not been able to do; successfully defend their title (1985).

I realized I got my years mixed up - I was a sophomore for the 1988 game. Freshman year was the win over NU with Kelfer's turnaround "jump shot" goal in OT.

Looks like Harvard (vs BU) and BC (vs NU) won the coin tosses as home teams (with last line changes) for the first round.

With a forward as talented as Donato, that makes a difference for sure.
