Re: BCS 2013-14: This space for rent

ESPN is going all out - seems like 1/2 of each hour show is about this.
Is there anything ESPN covers that they don't go all out on? I guess with 24/7 to fill they have to do like a lot of media and kick up dust about all sorts of stuff.

ESPN is pretty brutal with things like this. This is very important news, yes. Shouldn't people highly in support of gay athletes being who they are, etc. want this to be small news or none at all? That's being treated like everyone else, is it not?

I understand this is the start of moving towards that attitude, but ESPN, just like everything else, is trying to find every little thing to talk about with a story.

That's ESPN. Nothing else to talk about, aside from the (NBC) Olympics.

I'm honestly worried the media circus will burn people out on him and hurt him more than it will help him. Last thing you want is to get the derp squad yapping "ENOUGH ALREADY!" Once they start, they don't stop.

Chris Warcraft has discussed this a few times. He thinks the biggest issue with gay players will be the front offices for this reason. Though there are plenty of gay-friendly executives out there, the second a player comes out the media circus fires up and he risks becoming a Tebow-esque distraction. Supposedly there are already several gay players who have gotten together and discussed coming out, but are waiting for the right timing and climate.

Suppose someone had to go first though, so it's not a big deal later on.

And I have no problem with this line of thinking by GM's. The media circus could be a serious distraction, and even if they have no issues with having a gay player, they most likely will have a problem with a player that brings the circus to town, for whatever reason. With that said, the kid is going to get drafted, so it is going to happen. Hopefully this is the big hurdle, and from here on we only get better about it.

Re: BCS 2013-14: This space for rent

Meh. Meggs (Tallahassee DA) has been ripping the investigation from day 1. Doesn't mention Travis Johnson or Greg Dent. Expected more from a Pulitzer winner. (Yes, I spent way too much time on this case.)

Good to see the B1G moving forward with night games in November.

Crazy to think that the arguable favorites in the West, Wisconsin and Iowa, have zero primetime games currently. (Nebraska is right in that mix as well, though.)

I guess it frustrates me as I love day long tailgates, but I also somewhat understand the scheduling against the SEC. Emphasizing Michigan, Ohio, and the NE is fairly key moving forward with recruiting in the B1G.

You have no game @Minnesota listed, but in your summary at the bottom you say that Minnesota has one game, at home.

Re: BCS 2013-14: This space for rent

With the B1G's primetime schedule set, I decided to dive in and take a deeper look at how the TV contracts and companies may be thinking of the schedule moving forward. I did my best to take into account of other games going on, as well as the trend of ESPN networks taking two games, generally one at 11 am and one at 2:30 pm through October, and adding a third to that slate in November.

November 8

ABC is added to the 11 am schedule in November. They'll probably pick up Baylor/Oklahoma and Texas AM/Auburn. (LSU/Bama will be on CBS.) One will play at 11 and one at 2:30, maybe they both play at 11, which would move Iowa to 2:30. Not sure if FS1 automatically gets Baylor/Oklahoma or not. If they do, Hawks move to 2:30, as Minnesota lobbies hard for them. Notre Dame/ASU and UCLA/Washington are also on this Saturday. One of these four needs the ABC slot at 7pm. So three games to fill 2 11 am slots and one 2:30; could do a 6:30 on ESPN 2 as well. This week is a tough one.

11:00 am

Iowa at Minnesota ESPN (I could see BTN lobbying to move this to a 5pm kick on BTN if they want another primetime)
Michigan at Northwestern ESPN 2
Penn State at Indiana BTN
Wisconsin at Purdue BTN

2:30 pm

Ohio State at Michigan State ABC

November 15

11:00 am

What do y'all think?

Re: BCS 2013-14: This space for rent

Wait, what?
This....100x this?

I understand the reasoning behind Notre Dame playing there, but what kind of draw is Penn State going to be? Is it some sick brotherly connection between the Catholic Church and Penn State as being institutions of child molestation?
