BC-BU weekend

They also booed the BU WJC kids when they were honored I was told.

Wow...that's embarrassing. I went to the game at Agganis on Friday (as a neutral, for the record) and there was nothing but applause and support for the BC World Junior contingent.

Too bad about the booing - a couple thoughts around it:
- Lots more students in the crowd at Conte than HAA, presumably, given the timing
- Prior to Friday's game, "Everything is Awesome" for both teams. Prior to Monday's game, BC aren't happy with Friday's outcome, not in quite as cheery a mood to show the love across borders.

Re: BC-BU weekend

Exactly. The difference in student turnout could have been a factor in that. Mob mentality/peer pressure.

What's embarrassing is that will be the only game all year the students show up like that.

Congrats to BU, have no complaints with the effort from BC. Just struggling to find the net right now.

Re: BC-BU weekend

Very good point about the student presence - I heard BU's dorms weren't even open on Friday, so students weren't able to go. It was definitely a more reserved crowd than last night's.

Re: BC-BU weekend

BU looks good. One can only hope if they do get to the big game, Oettinger throws the puck into his own net like O'Connor did. At the very least I expect to see BU in Chicago.

On to BC. If you got Brock Osweiler drunk and threw him into a game against a top defense he would still have had a higher passing completion percentage than BC did yesterday. I don't know how it's even possible for a team to be that bad passing. I mean, if it's like UMass circa 1996 ... maybe... maybe. But Boston College with Jerry York as head coach?

Speaking of Jerry York, the coaching situation has flipped now that JackPa has gone and Jerry went pirate. We know Jerry will go when he wants to go, but I haven't seen the Jerry York we are accustomed to since about 2012 and I don't think he's gonna come back.

Coming into this season it seemed like a total rebuild and I think we all got sucked in by some fortunate results against so-so strength of schedule. Not all that dissimilar to the 2013 team that I think won 12 of the first 13 games in that season before being obviously not good down the stretch (Linell, Straight, Sit, Smith, etc etc etc). BC could be very good in a few years, though. It's just a question of who leaves. Woll is the best player and as a Leafs pick it's probably bad news considering how good he is as well. The good news is the rest of them clearly need some time before going pro, but that doesn't stop some of them (see Gilmour).

There was a great buzz in the building last night, a wasted effort. And they were buzzed quite a bit if not outright drunk. I'd like to see BC do a better job of keeping the kids obviously obliterated out of Conte. Some kids had no business being in there - pretty sure one of them I encountered in line at 6:30 was one of the night's more infamous troublemakers.

ps - Great to see BU2K and his better half. I don't think you two know how much I love you guys.

Re: BC-BU weekend

Do you guys have a bye weekend at some point? I was looking at the standings - you guys have played a couple more games than pretty much everyone in the league.

I believe dorms were open at BU starting on Friday, but classes don't start until this coming Thursday. BC classes I heard last night start today so it's understandable they're all there. The crowd last night was more like a library imo based on how many people were there, especially the student turnout. For a one-goal game, that place was silent.

Re: BC-BU weekend

As York said, it's not easy to win. They were just in the FF last year and lost a boatload of talent, more than anyone else in the country. This team is probably right where they should be right now.

Re: BC-BU weekend

Nick - I was actually impressed with BC's passing, at least in relation to BU's. BU was very good on getting the puck off the boards to start the breakout, but I thought BC's passes were crisper and quicker. And you guys love the play where you camp a forward on the offensive blue line at the boards, and someone hits him with a cross-ice diagonal pass from their own defensive zone.

Last night could have gone either way for sure. Oettinger had one of his best games so far. He is quietly putting together what could be a record year for BU (4 shutouts already, would have been 5 if he didn't have to leave for a skate malfunction). BC had long stretches in the offensive zone, BU's defense just seemed to be able t reach the loose pucks a split second quicker.

And it's not like Friday night was an easy win either. You guys certainly have the potential to make some noise.

BC had a lot of zone time in the third period, but they got very few quality chances, especially in the final 10 minutes of the game. I didn't see a shot chart, but the vast majority of their offense in the final 10 minutes came from blue line or heavily contested shots. BU's third period defense was much better last night than it was on Friday.

Re: BC-BU weekend

As long as it isn't like 2005-2006 when BU beat BC 4 (5?) times only to get blanked by them in the NCAAs.

Four. We lost the first game of the three conference games, stole the Beanpot on the MacArthur baseball goal, stole the HE championship game when Curry stood on his head, then had to play them again a week later in the NCAA and finally gave in. Neither team's roster is comparable to those two teams' roster, however. Not necessarily worse or better, just very different compilation of players.

The talent in Hockey East is nowhere near the 2005 era...
