Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

My money's on Abbott too, because first he says he hasn't, and now he says he has, so which is it?

Is it possible that Corkum has it in his contract that if Whitehead gets fired, he becomes the new coach?

I would doubt that very much.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

BassAle -- thank you very much for your note about the hockey team. We appreciate your support as a season ticket holder and we look forward to getting this program back to the level where we are competing for championships.

We have already been approached by some very qualified candidates who would make a fine head coach. In addition, we have been contacted by other potential applicants and expect the pool to become even stronger.

Bob Corkum is a fine coach and we are fortunate to have him in place to lead the team through its off-season conditioning workouts. These workouts are critical to our success next year and we felt it was important to have someone in place to provide stability and ensure that the training at this time of year was focused and intense. Bob knows that he needs to apply for the job just like anyone else. His status does not help his chances nor does it hurt his chances. The job is truly open and will be subject to a search.

Jim Montgomery is one of our greatest Black Bear hockey alums and we wish him the best at Denver I know that his status has caused confusion, in large part because of an article in the Bangor Daily News that appeared online on Thursday, where Jim indicated that he had not been approached about the search. I wanted to address that to clear things up.

Jim and I spoke at the conclusion of our hockey season. We had a very good conversation, which was private, where we discussed our program and our challenges. The Bangor Daily asked Jim if he had been approached by anyone about the search in the 48 hours after Tim was released. He said that he had not been. The paper then asked me if I had contacted Jim or any other candidates since Tim was let go. I indicated that I had not reached out to any candidates during that time, but that I had been contacted by a number of qualified applicants.

Lee Goldberg from WSCH asked me yesterday if I had ever spoken with Jim Montgomery -- a very different question. I told him that Jim and I had spoken a week or two before Tim's dismissal. Some people seem to have interpreted this as suggesting that Jim is lying about not speaking with me or that I am lying about speaking to Jim. That simply is not the case. We did not speak after Tim was released, as we both indicated, but we did speak before.

As I mentioned, we are going to have a terrific applicant pool and we will have the chance to make a selection from an immensely talented group of people. I know that there are many fans who were interested in Jim, but I am confident that we are going to have a very well-qualified coach who can lead this program.

Thank you again for your support of Maine hockey.

Steve

And Abbott still expects people to buy $50 tickets...........LOL. What a d-bag!

Yup and they will. If any good ones become available I will buy.

Can anyone explain and or show me the specific results achieved by JM that would mandate his immediate hiring. Show me anything outside coaching a uimited, funded GRP of high school kids. Dave Quinn has 50 times the coaching resume and 50 times better recruiting results and USA hockey connections and
BU fans were not impressed(they are wrong, he is a keeper+++).

Show me the exact bullet credentials JM has that make him the best candidate. They don't exist

He is a much better candidate for DU and will do very well there. The USHL connections he has and the programs name will get the kids.
At Maine, they won't work as well. He will not get the cream of the crop ushl/bchl kids that want to play Hockey East. If they visit here they will swing by bu and BC and maybe Harvard

Same coach with same style will kill it at du and not Maine

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

BassAle, flat out ask him if Montgomery is good enough for Denver, how isn't he good enough for Maine? Why didn't he reach out to Montgomery? Probably won't get a response...

hey hoky, where do you live? if you get season tix for maine does that mean there's no way you can have a full scouting report on all Hockey East teams?

Consider the timing involved.....Maine dismissed Whitehead on Wednesday, Monty got the Denver offer Friday/Saturday. I'm thinking Monty was in contact with Denver before Whitehead got the ax, I think that interview, vetting process takes more than 2 days. So how could Abbott have stopped that process with a Wednesday phone call?

Maine could've and maybe should've fired Whitehead 3 weeks ago. That's a legit criticism. But this idea that Abbott could've stopped him from going to Denver by calling him on Wednesday or Thursday doesn't hold water to me.

He will do well in Denver. 100% different scenerio. Denver has a BC/BU name and facility in their region. In honesty, JM should be happy he is there and will do very well. Very well

Not as convinced at Maine.

Have had 6 tix at Maine since 1986. Give most to my best friend who still lives there and has one of the boxes well. Owns a very large co up there

See many more mass gms

What resume did Walsh have? How many NHL games did he play?

He had his father in law and I can assure you JM is not Shawn Walsh. If you think he was coming in and could do what he did you would be dissapointed
There is only one SW.....
No matter what anyone from by or BC says, I always hung my hat on the factpPaul jariya was one of the all time great class acts. If he didn't believe in and respect him he would not have had all his siblings go there.

When he showed up the building was empty and team sucked. Mostly 2nd tier guys. SW and Jay could run around under the radar and sell their vision and had years to do it. Not opening night.. back then they could play golf bare foot and drink beers at Penoby and no one noticed or cared. That was a once in a lifetime moment and can't happen again
