Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

I vote for a 10 week reality show format on WABI, moderated by Steven King, featuring UMaine President Paul Ferguson, AD Steve Abbott, and a UMaine designee from the USCHO boards as the "selection committee". Candidates would include the obvious ones, like Monty, Gwoz, Corkum and Kerluke :) and the "producers" (that would be me :) ) would come up with 6-8 other marginal candidates and pseudo-celebs, geared to keeping the interest of the more casual viewers (i.e. the disaffected season ticket holder base that's deserted the program these last few years). One candidate gets eliminated every week. And just to make sure we don't have a repeat of past transgressions, the show will need to be overseen by an NCAA compliance officer. Ready to go when you folks are. :D

Capture this in an email. In fact, capture it in multiple emails. :D

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

I've liked what I've seen from Corkum but I'm curious about the recruiting. He has connections but why haven't they paid off? I actually think the recruiting has been a lot better since he came in and Perron left, but the prevailing notion among fans/media is Maine's recruits aren't good enough.....so how do you balance Corkum being qualified and having great connections with that "lack" of talent?

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Exhibit A has left the building.......

Because U Maine had the reputation of jerking players around in the USHL and BCHL, fact. Telling them one thing to get them on board and then balking. Whether it was true or not is meaningless, perception can be reality and in maine's case that was the rep. players talk

They did it to Derek Arnold and did it to several others, a couple at Maine now. That is one of the main reasons so few came from those two leagues as well as natl team, where Maine always had a few

It will not take long for the new HC to change that and with the right assistants, it will happen quick.

Maine is a great sell if done right and done with black and white integrity

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

This is one case where I hope what I've heard is wrong. I have so many good memories of Jimmy I so don't want this, or the recruiting information, to be accurate. Unfortunately the people we admire the most sometimes disappoint us the most.
According to todays BDN, once on the DWI not twice,

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Let's get the new coach hired! I wish next year was tomorrow! I just hope we don't dilly dally around and lose the best candidate to another rival.

I think the Arnold criticism is a little unfair. He struggled in the USHL the season before he was supposed to come in so Timmy told him to wait another year. We've had kids come in too early and it doesn't do us or them any good. I'm sure the extra year in the USHL and the kick in the *** from Timmy telling him to wait were invaluable to Arnold's development.

He didnt kick anyone in the a**, simply went back on his word. He had 20 goals in 50 games his first year, 20 goals in 59 games his second year. Kid went elsewhere, has had a great carear and was just in the frozen four on Power Play and top line, won Hockey east regular season and tourn while Whitehead just got fired. Sounds like TW got kicked in the a**

The word in USHL is simple, as it was in BCHL, dont go to Maine, you do not want to play for him. That will change with new coach

If what happened to him doesn't fire someone up they might as well quit playing sports. I'm sure you're right with his stats, but I believe the first year his production dropped way off in the second half of the season. I'm glad things have worked out so well for him.

UMaine dilly dally around? How dare you make such an accusation? No one at that school can make a simple decision unless their life or financial future depends upon it. How can they possibly get the best candidate in that position?

"Hi Jim, Steve Abbot here. Wanted to let you know we have an interest in you. Talk later. BTW, hows the family?" "Pelly, hows everthing? We'd like to talk to you in the near future, you interested? " "Eric, hows it going? C'mon up sometime and say hello"

Thats tuff stuff.

One of Derek's coaches from South Shore Kings is one of my best friends. Whitehead went back on his word.

Derek scored the game winning goal that sent Whitehead packing from the HE quarter-finals. Derek scored the only goal of the game in the HE Final against BU. Derek got to the Frozen Four and unfortunately lost in OT last night. Whitehead got fired Tuesday. There is justice sometimes. I hope the kid has a fantastic Senior year at UML, just not at Maine's expense now that Whitehead is GONE!!!!!!

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Lets be real, how can Whitehead's reputation not taint Corkum if everything thats happened in lack of recruiting is based on lying to Derek Arnold? Corkum was part of that, right? Thats what I would say if I was another school.

Maine's got how many ushl guys lined up the next few years? So they didn't get the Arnold memo?

I guess I just don't fully grasp how both these things can be true at the same time. You say Maines recruiting is bad and dishonest, but one of their main recruiters should be head coach. You say ushl guys wont give them trust, but Whitehead has a board full hopefully all staying. Which is it?

I'm not trying to be obnoxious because I think you have some idea whats going on, but I don't follow the logic.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

We can only guess, because we'll never really know, that Whitey micromanaged around this situation with Arnold while Corkum and Kerluke stepped back so as not to cause any waves and then stood around with their fingers up their ____ and watched. Maybe now that Timmay is unemployed, he'll have his wife on this board and explain it all to y'all :D

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Sounds like we'll know very soon if he's a Maine finalist. DU is going to make a decision over the weekend, correct? Their last interview is tomorrow.

Wow....how can they possibly move so fast and get it right? Obviously all those banners hanging from the rafters in Denver are a mirage. They should prolong the process and inject some analysis paralysis into the process....that'll get rumors flying and bad feelings galore. :)

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

........... but I don't follow the logic.

I don't follow the logic either. Maine dismissed their head hockey coach. Everyone else should be dismissed as well. I don't want lingering guesses and assumptions to be made about who is or was responsible. Hire a new coach and allow him to bring in his own coaches. It's called "cleaning house" and removing all previous influences associated with the program.

I don't agree. Coaching candidates should be judged based on their merits, and Corkum has a great resume, a proven NHL career, and has coaching experience and a desire to make it happen. Other candidates should be sought and judged according to their merits as well, but the environment of the program was less than ideal under Whitehead and now we can see what Corkum is made out of in the meantime. He is not second rate.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Are you serious? They need to complete a national search, review and hopefully interview all applicants. Then narrow the search down to a handfull of candidates and most likely interview them again if possible. Then they must review and discuss each candidate and eventually make a choice on a new head coach. Seems pretty obvious to me.

So why haven't they even assembled that first group of coaches to be interviewed? They should have been setting up this search committee before the season even ended. The longer they drag this out, the more chance they have of having to settle for their third or fourth best choice.

Oh, wait, but they already got Corkum waiting in the wings, make him the interim, then goive him the job permanently once the season's over. Been there, done that.
