Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired
I agree with this. He knew nothing good would come of it if he was continually butting heads, so he kept his mouth shut, and did what he could. And you can't undermine the head coach publicly.
Two things where I saw a lot of Bob in this team. One was in how much they improved on faceoffs once he got there. Those teams with Ryan, Hopson, Soares, Leveille, Hamilton, etc., with the exception of a few players, were just abysmal in the faceoff circle. Since Corkum's been here, they've been a lot better.
And I can't remember exactly which game it was, but it may have been the first Alabama-Huntsville game last season, when Maine, with the two Hobey candiates and the veteran team, were playing like crap for two periods and trailing 3-0 going into the third. They score three straight in the third, and won it in OT, and I posted that Corkum really must have chewed them out after the second period. BobF replies "How do you know it was Corkum?", and just that moment , TIMMAY was on the postgame show and said something like "I just told them we'd break the period down into four 5 minute blocks, and then Bobby yelled at them for a bit."
I think Corkum would make a great head coach, but as people have said, the fact that he's been there while all this has been going on might dampen the enthusiasm for him a bit. But he would definitely have this team play a hard-nosed, physical, tough to play against brand of hockey , like Walshy did. Montgomery I think would bring the same, because I think they both bring that same approach to the game. The one they learned as players. If Monty is named, I hope he keeps Corkum as his assistant, and lets him loose to input however he feels. The best of both worlds, I think, and a great and complementary partnership.
BTW, that 1989 team that Corkum was a captain of had no business winning 31 games, as they lost a ton of talent from the '88 team(Golden, Nonis, McHugh, Jack Capuano, Dave Wensley, Weinrich). I mean, you had a 1st line of Corkum, Luke Vitale and Bruce Major, if I recall correctly. It's a tribute to the coaching job Walsh, Crowder and Standbrook did, and the character and hard work of the players on that team that they were as successful as they were, in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. it didn't hurt that they had a couple freshmen named Pellerin and Robitaille join the team. But freshmen don't score, right?
Also, even last year, with the veteran team and the two Hobey candidates, this team began the season poorly, something like 4-7, before Corkum took them midnight skating. The man knows how to motivate.
Well, he either was the consumate professional or a wimp...to allow Whitehead to dictate poor or ineffective style of play for that many years without doing something to change it. My only answer is he was hanging around, biting his tongue waiting for the day Whitehead was let go, as I can see no reason to think otherwise.
