Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

I want to know why Mahoney is running a peice on Bob Corkum a day or two after Whitehead is let go. Dont see that this is entirely appropriate right now. What is Corkum Larry's fav to replace Tim ?

He took over as interim head coach, I think that was the purpose of the article.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

random, but related: I wonder whatever happened to Gary Thorne?
He took the PBP job for the Baltimore Orioles on MASN. He would have loved to keep doing the Frozen Four but his O's broadcasting schedule made that difficult.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Kind of a stretch, but I'm not surprised Larry would do this.

"At this point, I’d be interested in every job. I want to continue coaching and I would be foolish to close a door on anything."

Basically gave a standard answer that didn't rule anything out. Larry probably asked a cute girl to a HS prom once and she said "Let me think about it" and he was probably sitting there at his house in a tux on prom night with a corsage for the girl all night waiting for her to show up.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

?

Gotta say his association with Whitehead for 5 years where little was done to right the ship doesnt go over well with me anyway. Like Corkum and his drive, but have some unanswered questions about him

He wasn't the head coach, what can he do? I was told Campbell Blair would tell his D to not listen to Timmay, do what I tell you not what he tells you.

I was also told Bob skated the team after a ride home from UMass Amherst, he was the only coach left on the bus when it arrived at Alfond, made the team suit up in wet Unis and skated their asses off.

I think Bob could work but I agree he won't fire up the masses

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

I don't know how you can move an associate head coach to head coach when you fired the previous coach to "bring new energy to the program". No matter how qualified he is.

I think it's been, what? Two years since I last posted on these forums?

What brings me back you ask? In no particular order:

1) Tim Whitehead's dismissal
2) BassAle stealing the exact point I made to him the other day :D

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

“My brand of hockey is like smash-mouth football,” said the 46-year-old Corkum. “I like physical teams that play with a high tempo. We will be disciplined and the players will be held accountable on and off the ice.”

I like the sound of this!

Yeah, I heard the same midnight skate story too. If they win, they will come and Im a firm believer that the team has to play at a much higher energy level than what Whitehead ever asked for. So the masses I think will come around with an incease in energy in the building . You and I both know what it was like in there when many games were over 5 minutes into the game because the opposition was just steamrolled into submission.

I think this is what we all hoped would happen when he came to Maine as an Asst, I think he was over ruled by the Man.

Well, he either was the consumate professional or a wimp...to allow Whitehead to dictate poor or ineffective style of play for that many years without doing something to change it. My only answer is he was hanging around, biting his tongue waiting for the day Whitehead was let go, as I can see no reason to think otherwise.

Bob Corkum is a consumate professional. He loves the Maine Hockey program and bleeds blue. He was not the head coach, he was an associate head coach. I do know that he and Tim clashed many times privately, but he is professional enough to not go public with any of that to undermine the current head coach. If he had done that and was canned, what other head coach in the country would hire him? He has a duty and a right to protect his career, his families financial future, and he appears to have chosen coaching as his post playing days career. It is unwise for a person who wants to be a head coach to do anything other than fulfill his duties as an associate coach. Basically that means the head coach has the final say period.

I for one think Corkum would be a great hire for a new head coach and would bring intensity and passion back to this program.

yeah, yeah, yeah...I know all that.;)

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Okay, Montgomery and Corkum are done. Who's next in line to be analyzed. Gwodzecki....chit, I cant even spell his name. Fire away :D

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Not a good fit; too old, no ties to the program, and wants too much money.

Agree, but on the flip side (gotta go there) , lot of experience, successful, passionate (?) , won 2 titles ...he would have to take a pay cut, no doubt.

I see Denver as a lot different situation than Maine. I want someone who is going to have success not had success, there is a big difference. This isn't meant as a slight against him either, just don't think he would be a long term solution.

he told someone over a year ago "You're looking at the next head coach"

Well said and I agree. I still think he is a hard sell to the general public that knows little about Maine hockey other than Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy. Anyone who watched Bob play knows what a hard worker he was. But he doesn't have a hat trick in a Nat'l Championship game :)
