Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Gwozdecky was very close with Shawn Walsh and almost took an assistant job at Maine early in his career

Dont want no stinkin 59 year old Gwoz
Dont want no angry Jack
Dont want no Blodget look alike

Just want a young, proven winner and a leader. And we know where to find him. ;)

Gwoz has two national championships in the past decade...not a proven winner? Since when is 59 not a great age for a hockey coach?

I hope you're not intimating that you'll find your new coach from exactly the same place you found your old coach.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

the bald guy from Dubuque is Montgomery - led the Saints to the regular season title this year. And scored a hat trick in the 93 title game for Maine, right?

And wasn't Gwoz an assistant at Maine way back when?
edit: nope, was MSU, sorry

Or does my memory fail me...

You are mostly right. Gwoz never was an assistant at Maine, but he and Walsh were friends I believe.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Hiring someone with Maine ties could be the wrong approach. Remember Cindy Blodgett?

Cindy was totally unqualified and well above her head. She needed more seasoning but Maine needed stability and took a chance. Jim Montgomery has recruiting experience, management experience and coaching experience. He has cleared every hurdle and is the ONE person who will sell tickets, renew enthusiasm and bring in donations immediately.

Need to start a twitter handle #MaineforMonty

100% agree. I have to say I will be a little bit disappointed if it is anyone other than Jim Montgomery. He is a proven winner time and time again, he has the experience, he knows/lived/made the tradition at Maine, he's the best captain that Maine has ever had (with Metcalf a close second in my book) and I feel (can't back it up of course) that he would be loyal to the program long term. He is charismatic and has that fire that's been missing at Maine for so long. Can you imagine how amazing the atmosphere would be that first game with him behind the bench?? I think he would sell tickets instantly. He is the man for the job, bar none.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

No I don't. So I looked her up. I still don't.
Cindy was a Maine HS bouncyball phenom. Took her team to four State titles. At UMaine as a player, she was the really big fish in a koi pond. Racked up a lot of points, took Maine to the national tourney several times, always to lose in the first round because the recipe to beat Maine was easy: shut Cindy down. She played professionally in the WNBA, but never made much of an impact. She had a personal work ethic that was off the charts, and I think her downfall as a coach was that she thought that was normal and expected her players to have the same work ethic. She just wasn't cut out to be a head coach at that time because she couldn't relate to the players. Reminds me, in a different sense, to a story I remember hearing about Ted Williams. After he retired, the Sox had him come back as a hitting coach. He would tell the guys to adjust their swing based on the pitch that was coming. They didn't understand how to determine that. "By the rotation of the seams as the ball is on the way to the plate." By the what?? Other players couldn't see that, but Ted could and that is how he hit. Consequently he couldn't teach the guys anything and was a failure as a hitting coach.

As others have mentioned, the names being bandied about for the job all have head coaching experience, and have been successful at it.

This is a great day for Maine, didn't think this day would come. Was certain there was one more year of tim. Can't wait for next season.

Glad you guys finally got what you wanted. I hope the next coach for Maine turns your program around!

When it's going to take, realistically, three to four years to bring the whole thing under control and start to see some of their own recruits start to come into the program...then another year or two to build on that and get solidly back into the national picture. Could it happen faster? Yes. But that is a realistic timeline...IMHO
